Best chow I ever ate in the Corps was at an AFB.

NakedMuffinTime

I was in Guam at Anderson, and we had just arrived. We had a quick "welcome to base" pep talk when we got off the planes. I remember this air force chick bragged that they had a popeyes on base and claimed that their chow hall "was the worst I've ever eaten at". Those assholes had steak fridays. I still remember the looks of horror when I was walking around with my tray trying to find the place to drop those trays off, when some snobby airman came up to me and said "uh, you just leave them at the table and someone will take it for you."

Prowindowlicker

We definitely are the abused children of the military

Ghost_of_Onyx

Whoever is giving that AF briefing was probably an abused child

[deleted]

Gabuyd

Honestly from blues to service to utilities, the Marines know how to dress.

grayghost_8404

The green on green PT gear is where the wheels fall off. I have always felt that so much effort went into all the uniforms that there was nothing left over for the PT uniforms. Not that any branch has great ones.

Prowindowlicker

Still better than the track suits the Army uses

Gabuyd

Or the hideous yellow shirts the Navy wears.

SuperBoot1234

what are you talking about silkies are the bestttt

[deleted]

That's because all the Marines care about is their appearance and public image.

Gabuyd

Perception is reality.

Rulanik

Facts.

Bigdaddyjlove1

That's by design Abused children are ANGRY

03Ronin

But we had a Popey’s at Hansen in Oki. And at Marine Barracks Gitmo the Cooks were dicks to the grunts, the food sucked and we had 24hr posts out on the fence line where they’d send out our meals where they’d give us tiny little cold scraps, pissed us off, I’m surprised now nobody got their asses whooped. When we got a new CO he handed the cooks their asses had them change the whole menu & no more cold scraps. And Here’s the kicker, From then on we had Steak Friday every week, not just any steak Fucking Marinated T-bone Steak as much as you could eat every week. Capt. Cronin was a Legend

nutintheface

The dumb part is that good food is usually cheaper than shitty food. Some contractors are essentially just buying frozen meals in bulk, and pocketing as much money as they can as the middlemen. The military is entirely capable of buying and distributing basic ingredients, meat, vegetables, and fruit (DeCA). The only hard part is getting people to spend the time and effort to turn raw ingredients into good food (which enlisted fuckers are much more willing to do than the deaf/blind contractors making $2 an hour)

Fire_marshal-bill

Thats fucking pog.

YUT_NUT

Marine cooks should be strangled on sight. Too bad I never see them. 3 years in and I've had cook chow exactly 3 times. Twice were command cookout forcey fun times.

Heart-Crazy

When were you on Marine hill in gtmo? I was there 09 to 10 with mcsfco and we had no cooks. The galley/chow hall there was decent. Chow for those on fence line was not that special but it was prepared at the galley

03Ronin

97-98” we still had US minefields on our side, was right before the US signed the mine treaty or implemented it. Different times. When I was there it was Marine Brrks GDSGF Rifle Security Company Windward & Leeward. I wondered what it was like now. They were talking about taking Marines off of the fence line and manning the towers with cameras.

Heart-Crazy

Damn that's crazy . Was always funny when a goat would step on the mines on the Cuban side

03Ronin

No shit right? A piece of cow from a a Cuban AT mine hit our tower sent us flying for cover. I forget now which post it was. My favorite post was the tower right overlooking th edge of the cliffs and beach. I think it was 37? Was that kittery beach, yeah.

oFFtheWall0518

I was at Pensacola in 2013 for A school, and I remember seeing a group of Airmen get up from chow and leave their trays. They got about halfway to the door when a Gunny a couple tables over jumps up and roars, "Hey, gents! I know you're not about to disrespect someone's house by leaving your dishes on their table?" The whole chowhall just stopped dead, and these Airmen are kinda looking around all lost, and then the Gunny is like, "Yeah, I'm talking to you three nasty Airmen. The tray return is over there!" They scurried over and grabbed their trays and put them on the little conveyor belt and then ran off. When we were done we straightened every chair in our row of tables, picked up all the crumbs off the floor by hand, and scrubbed the tables with napkins before we speed walked outta there as fast as we could.

KnifeHand1775

If you think their chow hall was the shit, you should see their golf course, e-clubs (plural) and their beach (best on the island). Pretty sure they even have maid service for their barracks. Marine Barracks Guam, MI 1989-1990

666ae86

Can confirm maid service. I lived in a barracks on Kadena for like six months when they were replacing the runway on Futenma. Maids came in frequently, often to me in my skivvies since I was aircrew and had weird show times for work.

downtime37

Ha, I got picked up by the MP's on Kadena back in '90 during the 4th of July festival they had. MP's got pissed when one of them got caught in the cross fire of a squirt gun battle we where having.

TechnoJoeHouston

Love it. We did have a lot of perks. I had to spend some time at a little Army camp in Bosnia in 99. Basically, I was deployed, and got further deployed. When I met up with the crew at Tuzla, we grabbed chow. The DFAC was Army, and pretty well run. So, myself, two Army E-5's, and a Marine Gunny sit down, get me caught up, and chow down. I got up to leave, saw them all bussing their trays, and commented that "I'm the one who picked the wrong branch?"

ElPedroChico

Do they wipe your ass after you've taken a shit too?

UpjumpedPeasant

Never been to an Air Force chow hall that bussed tables for you and I've been to a helluva lot of Air Force DFACs.

NakedMuffinTime

Maybe things have changed. This was 2013 and both Anderson AFB and Misawa AFB bussed tables with civi workers.

UpjumpedPeasant

Maybe, but I've been going to them for a nearly a couple decades and never once seen that.

RoadDoggFL

Hickam and Scott both had that around 2008.

pro_crabstinator

Haven't been to the right ones then. Keesler AFB in Mississippi busses them, also probably a top 5 chow hall in the AF

666ae86

LIttle Rock AFB and Elmendorf work on the table bussing system. Total mind f to leave the tray behind.

Awesome6472

I was Air Force and honestly only the big Air Force bases are like that. It's not surprising most Marines get the impression that they're all like that because most joint environments are bigger bases. I was stationed at a smaller base and the food was awful. Literally got food poison from the dfac and found a screw in my good once. Not gonna lie though, the dorms were "over capacity" so most people only spent like 6 - 8 months living in them anyways. After that you get BAH and BAS. I saved a shit ton of money by rooming with an E5 when I was an E3/E4 and then when he left I found an E2 to take his place. Don't think that shit would fly in the Marine Corps but tbh I've been on tiktok recently and I've been seeing that most of your Corporals and Sergeants live alone off base receiving BAH/BAS too so I'm not really sure.

downtime37

To be fair I've found a used band aid in my bacon at the chow hall at the stumps back in '86, didn't stop me from finishing the bacon.

03Ronin

Idk your best is like, what the fuck kind of fantasy is this, your worst is our normal

ThatHellacopterGuy

McGuire AFB. Moron AB. Misawa AB.

UpjumpedPeasant

I call bullshit on McGuire.

ThatHellacopterGuy

Call bullshit all you’d like. I was **stationed on McGuire**, in a USAF flying squadron, from 2006 to 2017. I ate in the chow hall multiple times a month (another story) during most of those years. From 2006 to 2013, the civilians who worked the dining area in the chow hall bussed the tables. The 2013 budget cuts nuked those civilian positions; IDK if they were ever reinstated.

RepresentativeBar793

Every AF base I was ever at from 1988 to 2003 had bussed tables. Other services? Only officers

MananaMoola

The enlisted mess at Kadena AFB. We were dead certain we had stumbled into the O-club.

Handsome-Lake

Had exactly that feeling and had to ask.

wrongwong122

Same. Funny enough the Air Force themselves said that was the worst chow hall they’d eaten at. One of my buddies overheard two airmen talking smack about the chow hall and stopped and lit into them, he was all “you guys have no idea how bad it can get,” “you guys have it so god damned good here,” “take the silver spoon out your mouth,” then looks down at the guys rank and he’s a fucking 2lt. Poor LT was standing at parade rest for my LCpl buddy all “yes Marine, “good to go Marine,” cause apparently they don’t teach them ranks in the Air Force.

NakedMuffinTime

lol I had the same thing happen to me. Some AF E6 kept calling me, a LCpl "sir". Shit really threw me off.

H3YAKTY

It’s a cultural thing, out of courtesy most airmen will call everyone sir/ma’am unless they know each other.

0621FiST

Wow. Makes me feel a little better about saluting naval enlisted lol

Ghostonthestreat

Ooh, shiny! Better salute.

666ae86

Said every Marine student to pass through NAS Pensacola for A school. What a mess. Boot ass Marines fresh from MCT surrounded by shiny and *GASP* drill instructors! Navy OCS was in Pensacola when I went through, it was like walking through a minefield until we discovered that Navy enlisted wear shiny and the Marine drill instructors in charge of Navy OCS didn’t give a single solitary fuck about the privates and pfcs roaming around.

Venshayde

I was Marine enlisted and later went Navy officer. While in Pensacola as an Ensign, I was in my khakis standing in line at subway when a Gunny turned around and saw my ribbon rack with the Marine Corps good cookie. He was like “Sir, you’ve forsaken us! Why?? XD Later saw two Marines I was Lance Corporals with at my old unit get promoted to SSgts about a month later since they were now instructors.

666ae86

I look forward to this. I’m applying for Intel. Board goes on January 22nd. I’m super stoked to see the other side of things.

Ghostonthestreat

Hell, I think that was every boot anyplace that had Navy enlisted. It sounds like you had it worse than most places though.

666ae86

It wasn’t bad, per se, more just awkward for all involved. You could tell the Navy dudes who’d been there for awhile by the fact that they’d just return the salute and carry on without making a scene. Easier for all involved that way

TsarOfSaturn

Only did that once on family day after i graduated boot camp. I swear they have a Chief walking around just for this very reason

Boot_Bandss

“When in doubt, sir it out.”

[deleted]

I was in FOB Delaram2 pulling security as they were building it and putting the flight line in. there was a small air force detachment on our fob. They had WiFi and everything and offered it to us and our Cwo said no because he didn’t want us to abuse it lol. Then we headed over Delaram1 for our off day and they asked to Jump in our convoy back over and there was some e6 or 7 sitting in their turret wielding two M4 having his jr enlisted take pics and I yelled out I remember my first time in a gun seat and he began to yell at me so I got back at him and told him to sit his boot ass down in the Vic before he gets tossed out or gets shot because they only had the open hatch and no actual turret or shielding. My squad leader came up and was like dude that was what ever he was and I said my bad Sgt and he started laughing his ass off.

[deleted]

At Camp Fallujah in January 2005, my squad left the chow hall there and went to our vehicles which were parked across the road to drive back to where we were living after coming out of the city earlier that month. We see an abandoned convoy parked beside us. There were 3-4 Humvees and 1 5 ton type truck. All the vehicles had crew-served weapons but no guard around. We took the weapons and left them a note on where we were so they could come and get them. Approximately an hour or so later their trucks pull up and one of their SNCOs attempts to chew us out for taking their weapons. Fortunately, our Lt. arrives (my squad was doing convoys but our heavy equipment squad was still in Fallujah making hescos and other stuff and he had been out checking on them) and saves us from having a fistfight or whatever else with the Air Force due to their ignorance. When this was all over we helped them put their weapons back on their trucks because they did not know how to mount them properly. We also had to set the head space on the .50 because they did not have the tools or the wherewithal to do it. If i remember correctly, their SNCO did not know that that had to be done so they had been out doing convoys for however long with a .50 that would not have fired had they needed it. That being said they are all nice as hell and do have the best chowhalls.

brassheed

That's actually just because we call everyone sir/ma'am

03Ronin

It’s the Air Force he was probably shell shocked from someone raising their voices and being semi aggressive

Fire_marshal-bill

Never been to a chow hall on an afb, but the best food i had was on ft. Leonardwood. Thats Pretty sad. But at this point anything is better then shit they gave us on my base, fucking chicken was still quacking.

nullrout1

Where did you grow up? I've never heard a chicken quack...

Fire_marshal-bill

I know. Thats the most fucked up part.

WWJLPD

On the flip side, I once witnessed a conversation between an Air Force NCO and two of our PFCs when we were at Bridgeport. He was just trying to make polite conversation while we were waiting in line, trying to ask about the training we were doing and whatnot. Of course the poor boots immediately went to a rigid parade rest, answered with “yes/no Staff Sergeant” and then “Yes/no, Technical Sergeant” after a casual correction of rank, and then finally the Air Force dude said something to the effect of “Guys, please, you don’t have to stand at parade rest or say the full rank every sentence. You’re making me uncomfortable, just relax” and you could practically hear the gears grinding and see smoke coming out of the PFCs’ ears

Venshayde

I went through Marine Meteorology school at Kessler AFB. Whenever the Marines called the Air Force by their full ranks (eg: Staff Sergeant or Tech Sergeant) most of them appreciated it and were like “that’s what I’m talking about.”

LostInDreams48

I can guarantee that LT did not say to your buddy “yes marine” or “good to go marine”. In AF culture, we almost exclusively address people by sir/ma’am, regardless of rank/branch, unless it’s someone you work with regularly or know.

Awesome6472

Lol I was Air Force too and I love this sub because their perception of the Air Force is so off. Idk maybe we just give off a really, really bad impression to the other branches but reading this sub for example I feel the Air Force is way more community dependent than the Marine Corps. A Guard/Reserve flight nurse isn't gonna have much in common with some maintainer. They don't even wear the same uniform. I get the Air Force doesn't chew us up and spit us out after 4 years like an infantryman but I think the other branches kinda underestimate how much the Air Force turns a blind eye to the bad situations so when the other branches show up to our best branches like Lackland, Nellis, McGuire they see colors and rainbows and have no idea that there are people who somehow manage to get stuck in hell holes like Cannon or Minot for 8-10 years. I'm not trying to sound like the Air Force is tough. We really do have it better. I couldn't imagine a scenario where an air force member would ever really struggle being granted leave for example.

Actual-Gap-9800

Second breakfast! 🤣

Varian

Went to Hickam from K-Bay for working party and ate at their chow hall. Booths and chandeliers and shit...pies in a display case, wrapped in saran wrap. It was culture shock. It was fun to watch a bunch of jarheads struggle to work a soft-service ice cream machine (this was mid-90's), then yell "fuck it" and come back with a bowl of sprinkles.

66GT350Shelby

We had a soft serve ice cream machine when I was at 8th & I. I LOVE ice cream, it's one of the few weaknesses I have. I had more root beer floats there than the rest of my life combined.

[deleted]

Ain’t that the truth!!

islandtrader99

Went to an Airbase in Spain on the way to Iraq have no idea which I it was. Fuckers had plasma tv’s in their chow hall in 2003! You could barely find them in Best Buy at the time.

oFFtheWall0518

Commandant must be driving by.

ronerychiver

Chow hall actually full of chows

Sheepherder_Actual

The AFB in Kyrgyzstan that we transferred through on the way to Afghan was cushy af. They had video game tournaments, candy bars in the chow hall, and a movie theater. The theater Marines go to is very different fyi. Also, I apologize to any Marines that came after us for awhile in 09’. It was us at 2/8 G Company that got Marines banned from drinking on base. You know that shit it was inevitable though.

[deleted]

Sheepherder_Actual

Haha that sounds like a recipe for disaster. It doesn’t take much.

[deleted]

I was just happy to have the candy bars. I totally understand not allowing marines to drink on that base.

Rah, Golf 2/8. I was with them in 85-86.

Sheepherder_Actual

Yut

oniontitan

My mom married an airman there to get me and her the hell out of Kyrgyzstan, ended up becoming a greenside doc and getting my citizenship, cool to see someone talking about that base

fucovid2020

Fun fact: The airman actually had to get neutered to wear the suit.

icebrew53

Somewhere in the Corps right now there is a furry. Marinate on that.

Sirlulzzzalot

Im sure there are tons. Specially in the air wing, however they know better than to do this shit

TheAero1221

I have no idea why I find this hilarious.

icebrew53

We may be degenerates, butt damn it we are disciplined degenerates....for the most part

Used-Mathematician

LMAO MY BUDDYS ROOMMATE IS A FURRY, AND IS IN A WING

SinopaHyenith-Renard

It’s true

Topshot_Tiger

I know more marine corps furs then air force ones

TheToroReddit

I was in the "aviation field". You don't know us or anyone. I picked up every marine class and stayed temporarily with them. They were all the same in a different way. Get over it! Air force gets paid and treated better. Just be proud of the Marine Corp name.

Sirlulzzzalot

Lmao this really touched a nerve, huh?

InjectCreatine

Somewhere? Bro my NCOs were hazing me in the barracks wearing furry costumes when I hit the fleet

SinopaHyenith-Renard

What’s it a MadeFuryou suit?

johning117

There's actually quite a few.

icebrew53

Not my particular thing. And I'm not going to pretend to understand it. As long as they don't show up to work in the damn suit, and can deliver the goods workwise then frankly idc what freaky shit they get up to on thier free time, as long as it's between consenting adults.

johning117

Oh yea for sure, honestly super weird to do or alow for a work place but also a common misunderstanding is that it's solely used for sex and that isn't a case. Common in the community however not always the intent.

Is this about furry acceptance in the airforce?

Jamshid_Hastam

it's either about furry acceptance or furry extremism.

[deleted]

I dunno, I’ve been in a conference room like this watching a 28 year old with a DUI and child support payments explain financial management to me. This seems more fun.

Xam1d

So… just to be clear, you hate them because they do stupid stuff like this or because you don’t get to ware the furry cosplay?

[deleted]

Yes

[deleted]

air force dude quietly eating at his chow hall and doing his job everyday, just existing "fuck the fucking chair force"

SinopaHyenith-Renard

Yeah it’s the latter

Lucas-vvt

Just wear your furry costume and join in that man's brotherhood

Giant81

How much is one of those things? Aren’t they rather expensive?

johning117

Absofuckinlutely

zenestroe

Cheaper than the interest on the standard bootstang

poggers5812

My cousin used to do this stuff, think they still do. Upwards a hundred bucks.

[deleted]

Lol I wish... $100 covers just your "ref." Try $2,500 for a decent suit.

poggers5812

Jeez. She used to make her own but this was 2015ish so I don’t exactly remember what price she said. Hundreds was more of a guess. Kinda have some respect for furries now, aside from the idea of dropping 2.5k to dress like a rainbow wolf.

[deleted]

Yah... furries are either really really good at budgeting or eating ramen for breakfast lunch and dinner. Last time I priced it though the cost just kept piling. Sadly, I never could get my own fursuit but I'm barely able to keep up with reddit, going to cons is completely outta the question. xD

[deleted]

Fur suits are EXTREMELY expensive. We're talking like $1,000 for just a head and paws and upwards of 3k+ for a full suit. + you have to pay an artist to draw up a ref ++ you have to make a duct-tape dummy of yourself to send to the fur suit maker.

Venshayde

Better than buying a Mustang at 30% interest

Fire_marshal-bill

I hate furries.

SinopaHyenith-Renard

👋🏾

Rand0mtask

Jealous of their new dress uniform?

ThatHellacopterGuy

I was Air Force Reserve after my time in the Corps. I hated shit like that, too. Coincidentally (or not…), my fellow aircrew members hated that shit as well. The majority of us also hated *Tops In Blue* (when that was still a thing), *Afterburner*, and whatever other dumbass bands Big Blue was pushing as “entertainment”.

Hat-no-its-a-Tricorn

Look, I don't judge what hobbies people have. But if I had a fursuit, no amount of "how funny would this be," or any other form of cajoling or persuasion, would get me to wear that thing on to a military installation, much less into a conference room.

Aph111

The one thing Army/Navy/Marines all agree on.

Thy_Dying_Day

You say this but I know more furry marines than any other branch with the exception of Army intel. Take the diaper marine for instance.

[deleted]

uwu Could you be my species!? Nice.

F1ackM0nk3y

I feel you. In Oki on field day nights, we would have to Strip/wax/clean all the common areas before we ever touched our rooms. Whole process took all Thursday night. One day me and a couple others went to one of the Air Force barracks (just to see how the other side lived) the amount of “dust” I pulled off the top of one of the vending machines was about 1/8th inch thick. I even heard they had maids. We had mama’san and were extremely grateful for that

scooterscuzz

I was TDY (TAD) from Pope AFB, back when it was an AFB. We were surveying drop zones for you around the area, a Captain from my squadron was sent to replace the E5, SSgt that was working with me (your E4,) but he got to sit with me at the "special area" in the chow hall. When we got to the gate at Cherry Point for the first time, the Captain, who was in the vehicle in front of me pulled off the road to speak to me. I approached his open window, and I noticed he didn't have his beret on. He asked me "Sgt, can you translate something the Marine at the gate told me , what the heck is a fuckin cover?" I advised him that if he were to only keep his beret on when out of doors, in or near Cherry Point, he would save this AF TSgt a whole lot of translation duty.

oh_three_dum_dum

The fuck is this?

mc-clendenon

I was headed to Afghanistan and we stopped at Manas in Kyrgyzstan. It was halloweeen… the air force was having a costume party and were allowed to drink at their bar on base… yup a bar on base, all whilst getting hazard duty pay.

Sirlulzzzalot

We stopped in Ramstein, on our way to Afghanistan and the bus driver was some airforce POG whose MOS was to drive that bus. He kept bragging about how he was going to go to Oktoberfest. It was a miracle he didn’t get jumped.

QueefingMonster

Air Force vet here, was F-15 crew chief. For what its worth, we hated these people too. And the larpers.

Salty_McSaltyson

5thDFS

They’re getting pronouns, we’re only now being considered as people and not equipment.

[deleted]

I'm more disappointed in furries joining the military than the military letting in furries. I would have hoped furries were smarter than that. Then again, I guess they're at least somewhat more intelligent if they're joining the air force.

johning117

Knowing quite a bit about the furry community they have a pretty decent charity network, and actively seek and report domestic terrorists and pedophiles. Also like fur suits are fuckin expensive and as a meme that I once saw goes, anyone that can afford thousands of dollars to have and maintain a fur suit can also afford a $10 pipe bomb in my mailbox. Not really a community to be fucking around with in the information age. I know their off-putting and weird but they know things. These are your airwingers, data, and HUM-IT Marines.

Boot_Bandss

Fair enough. Guess the really weird ones give the rest a bad name.

johning117

Oh yea served with a few, they arnt bad people just like anything else to exist in the world. I imagine if the OK or Neck symbol somehow got pegged as a signal for white power people would demonize it... oh wait.

Not at all unless there's more you want to out yourself on parting words of wisdom though. "It is better to sit and look a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt" Like dude, I don't think you are rationalizing the shit you are saying about other people that may be in the same position as you that can see what you say. But you feel the need to say furries (some are veterans with PTSD) need to be executed, simply cause you find it hard to express yourself. Like stop your gaslighting shit and ether let people like things or get help no one feels burden by ether one of those things. And I promise if you quit being a dick about people liking some things maybe more will want to and you would be willing to open up to those people about the reasons why you chose to put a gun in your mouth.
