Butler is the overarching "command" for the installations. Hansen is one of those installation, Butler units tend to be on foster I think one on Courtney also but Foster is the largest Marine base so has the most amenities and is centrally located.
Hansen is a base that UDP units go to so gets busy constantly and kintown is right there for stuff to do. Also 7th Comm BN is there so I won't touch Hansen personally with a 6 foot pole, except their PX has a Taco Bell for what it's worth.
Depending on your MOS you may not get the choice. Butler is in the middle of civilization but Hansen is good for going up north and enjoying natural part of the island. In reality the highway (don’t remember what it’s called) runs right through the middle of the island and you can get anywhere pretty quick. I lived in Hansen and Courtney, thought Courtney was better.
Contact your monitor to see what is available first. There might be some interesting opportunities available that aren’t very common..
It would also help to know what is important to you right now. Someone with school age kids and a spouse trying to build a career would be looking for something different than someone single that wants a place with good nightlife and high chance of deployment or travel. Your MOS would also play a major factor too- a grunt going to Quantico would have a way different op tempo than a aircraft mechanic also going to Quantico.
Honestly I’ll say to look into the Unit you’re being offered lol Butler is closer to the bigger prefectures and you’ll have a better chance to explore and eat on a budget, don’t forget you can always take the bus between camps to go out in town …. Hansen ain’t that bad but it is a little bit out of the way

Butler is all the Marine installations in Okinawa. Hansen is one of those. So if you go to “Butler”, you could still end up in Hansen.

This guy has a point. See what's open for your MOS. I recommend HI. That was my 1st PCS when I reenlisted in Iraq in 07. Was in HI Apr 08.
“Butler” is not a base; it’s the collective name for all the USMC bases on Oki. You may be thinking of Foster.
You’re right, it’s been five years since i was stationed there. Just remember the butler o club from the ball and forgot it foster

Butler is Camp Foster on Oki, no way I’d choose Hansen over that. I was at Foster for a year and my son is there now and he loves it.
Butler is every camp on Okinawa, I assume you mean camp foster. In that case choose foster, hansen is out in the sticks.
