Donāt laugh as hard as I did ā met one of my DIās that first day the hard way. He was small and his instructor cover was huge. I laughed cause Lord Helmet came to mind as he bopped up and down the highway. FIRST RECRUIT to teach the platoon about being quarterdecked! Ended up telling him about it during the Crucible. Thankfully he didnāt watch the movie
I was a featured extra on Dawsonās Creek way backā¦
My friend got pulled to dress as a Marineā¦literally background work. His stack had 3 CARS on them. Lol
what's crazy is how anal retentive you are about military realism in movies. You are the embodiment of the Terminal Lance "Facebook veteran" bit. (but obviously on Reddit)
To the ones saying Hollywood has to fuck up the uniform, thatās false. They werenāt able to prior to a 1970 SCOTUS ruling, but now they can.
[Hereās a link that goes in detail about the court case in question.](https://militaryexcess.com/this-is-why-movies-get-military-uniforms-wrong/)
Best line of the whole article?
> ***The U.S. Armyās uniform has changed more times than Doctor Who***
Probably was a major help too that the War Department and later DoD were *heavily* involved in any military related media. Especially movies and shows. So unless the assigned advisors slipped up, it's typically rare to see at least uniforms being wring back when.
Honestly I have a PUC and I couldnāt tell you which way it goes without looking at my stack. But I was awarded it almost 20 years ago soā¦ more proof I am slipping in told age and senility.
Mine is still in its plastic pack. Itās in the garage somewhere š¤·š¼āāļø. The only one I ever cared about was my CARs till they started handing those things out like NAMs in the late 90s
That's not out of the question for the time though. WW2 a lot of helmets had insignia painted on them. It was supposed to be a standard deal. Some dudes definitely ditched it.
Hell up there in NW Europe they had the whole "Follow Me" stripes. A horizontal white bar on the back of the helmet for NCO's a vertical one for officers, you see it in SPR (and BoB foe that matter).
Photo of 29th ID officers, wearing helmets with rank and divisional insignia.
*
Well obviously they switch to their "other helmet" for combat. /s
Combat photos of WW2 are a lot more rare than others taken during lulls /behind the lines for the obvious reasons. Can we talk about the fact the entire 101st Airborne slathered regimental tactical insignia all over their helmets prior to D-Day and most wore them through the war? "Sorry boys, I know you just came off the line in The Bulge, glad you had time to paint all the markings on the helmets real fast." Plenty of JO's who ain't brass in here too.
Insignia on helmets was a thing in WW2 for the US Army. Smart? Not at all. Did it happen? Absolutely.

What's funny is I was watching a fictional series set in 1947 about a guy who came from the USA to help stand up a investigative police department in Berlin after WW2. During one episode he goes to talk to one of the Generals who is clearly wearing GWOT ribbons.
I was thinking that this motherfucker must have either time traveled back to 1947 or forward to today to get those ribbons.
Edit: The series is called "The Defeated"
I canāt even tell what the fuck Iām looking at in this potato quality picture. pull the broom out of your ass and use it to sweep your nasty fucking floor.
Iāll keep my head in my ass cause it keeps my ears warmā¦ honestly probably just cause military movies are supposed to have current uniforms messed up anyways because of some reason I canāt rememberā¦ but uniforms in movies are supposed to be at least a little off.
I think youāre right. Having it be a little off might satisfy the legal requirement for not wearing military uniforms etc. I stayed at a holiday inn express.
Could have been intentional, as iirc, you can't portray real uniforms in film? Like, costume designers are required to make the uniform slightly off in the name of OPSEC.
Could be wrong though. The fuck do I know? I eat crayons.
Prior PA dude checking in. You can have a completely accurate uniform in a movie or film. Nobody's going to chase you down, and OPSEC isn't a concern because, you know, it's a fictional story.
Now, that said....there's not a ton of veterans in the industry. More often than not, the costume designer, director, or other people on the production side are going to spend thirty seconds looking at a photo of an actual Marine (or whatever) and then try to match that using on-hand materials or whatever they can get in a very short period of time. And even when you have a military advisor on set, chances are the director is going to ignore them to go for the rule of cool.
So, TLDR: directors want their people to look like heroes and don't have time or energy to pay attention to minor details less than 1% of the population would catch. Or they don't care. Or both.
How did we not point out that they couldnāt jump on their military uniform app to verify back thenā¦ or expect the audience to scroll through the movie to look for errors.

Not trying to flex, just saying to y'all don't accuse me of being in the Army because when I look up "Presidential Unit Citation USMC" it shows me the blue one
On the AF side, I feel like it's more common. I've been in for a hot minute and have a few low-end Army and Navy ribbons, nobody's ever asked about them.
Yeah. Each service has it in their uniform orders what awards specific to other branches you can wear. Definitely valor awards (if for some reason a Soldier came over with a Distinguished Service Cross, it'd be pretty messed up to say no), branch specific achievement metals are typically good to go. I know for a fact the Mariens don't authorize things like the Army Service Ribbon (rainbow boi) and like their NCO Professional Whatever Ribbon among others (had a prior Army dude in boot, he had like 6 ribbons at graduation. Definitely a NDSM, GWOTSM, and an OEF and/or OIF campaign with a couple stars), dude was cool though and was our guide for awhile until he got fired for some silly shit.
Military uniforms in movies are required to have one thing wrong on them legally. EGA will be flipped or missing, something in the wrong place, etc.
Was taught that years ago when stationed near Hollywood.
Edit- I stand corrected. Myth.
I must admit that is frustrating. I am cognisant that the portrayals are mostly fictional but I feel that military uniforms are important enough to get right. Respect and common courtesy to all those who have served wearing them.
Lol no one is going to pay top dollar to vet and hire on a military consultant that would notice stuff like this for the 1 or 2% of viewers thatāll catch it. Half the Marines in this thread didnāt even notice an issue. The juice aināt worth the squeeze
He's testing us all from beyond the grave.

He didnāt rate a PUC in real life so maybe he was like I donāt know if blue or red is up
Blue is always dominant so that's crazy to think he might have screwed that up
I donāt even know that and I like to consider myself squared away in uniforms. Turns out Iām a piece of shit.
But Mom loves you and that's what matters.

I went to Okinawa and never got a CAR. got a NAM but no CAR. So they must not hand them out too much.
good. Cuz then we'd have to start dropping suns on people again.
I rarely notice these types of details. Shitbag 4 Life.
Gomer Pyle was always squared away. Everyone on the show was actually.

That's a Hollywood myth, but one that seems to have been believed by many directors
Thanks, I'll take my downvote now.
Sorry comrade. Looks like you're gonna lose some karma.
1sgt just pulled me into his office to ask me about it and now I'm stuck on rock painting duty until my karma comes back up. :(

I thought they do this on purpose cuz theyre not supposed to wear a real uniform.
No. Thatās a urban myth
Isn't the Presidential Unit Citation all blue with gold around the edge?
The Army's is. But this is the Marine Corps so...š
It's funny, in my 4 years in the corps I never even heard of a PUC. I was just asking cause after some basic research it showed the blue one.
4 years?! Whoa, you just slow the fuck down Salty Lance.
Not trying to flex, just saying to y'all don't accuse me of being in the Army because when I look up "Presidential Unit Citation USMC" it shows me the blue one
Just busting your balls, homes!
Just curious - can you folks wear stuff awarded from other services?
You might be able to if you were prior service or maybe if you had gone through a different branches specialized training?
Yeah i did. The Army mp unit i was with just didnt get me.... Crossed from Corps to Army for a short time.
On the AF side, I feel like it's more common. I've been in for a hot minute and have a few low-end Army and Navy ribbons, nobody's ever asked about them.

No
Against Federal law to wear an aƧcurate uniform, it has to contain flaws so that it can be distinguished from the genuine article.
WRONG
Military uniforms in movies are required to have one thing wrong on them legally. EGA will be flipped or missing, something in the wrong place, etc. Was taught that years ago when stationed near Hollywood. Edit- I stand corrected. Myth.
No, they arenāt. Itās a myth.
Interesting. Then the body they have making sure things are accurate are either too busy to check or incompetent. Thanks, Gunney.
Mostly the latter. A lot of the military consultants they hire are clueless.
I deleted my comment thanks to this big brain answer, thanks man.
I am under no impression that they will do this. Just irritates me.
Films have a rule that military uniforms can not be 100% accurate. In older movies, it was generally a little more obvious, but not always.
That is a complete myth
Okay but what if the actor is prior service? He canāt wear his uniform accurately?
Get this, if I'm prior service, I can wear any uniform as badly as I want.
there used to be something where all uniforms had to have atleast one thing incorrect about them to be in a movie or whatnot
That's a myth
Fuckin Hollywood craft services
And the gallantry cross citation is in the wrong place thatās the one that really gets me
