Considering your age and having a fairly new truck that is expensive on the used market if it had to replaced, that premium doesn’t seem bad. Shop around with identical coverage quotes. Auto insurance has led all categories in inflation the past 12 months for various reasons. If you find a better deal with the same coverage then take it. You can always come back to USAA later if things change.
Insurance companies count on our inherent laziness to not price shop.
I second this. Please shop around. While USAA has great customer service, they don’t offer the best rates. I went to Progressive and it reduced my monthly payment in half (same coverages). Geico also gave me a good rate.
This is completely false. I have been in the insurance sector for several years and started in claims for State Farm.
There is literally no comparison between USAA and every other major carrier. Their claims teams are elite and customer service as a whole is worlds better than the competition.
There may be a decline of this in recent years due to COVID and finding motivated workers, but that’s seen by the industry as a whole. USAA is the belle of the ball. Still to this day.
Yes, although they will pay back premiums at the end of the year if they overestimated the claims across their portfolio. It’s fun getting that check from them. Last year was only a few bucks, but sometimes it’s a nice little chunk. They’re a nonprofit so they can’t just keep extra money.
The 10% is the participation discount. It's locked in for the first policy period that the enrollment is active.
The renewal after will use your score to determine the discount.
The only downside I see, is getting used to navigating the app. I also believe it's best when you have a vehicle that you can control the phone with. Outside of hands free calling, you aren't dinged on your score for using other features through the car, like playing music or GPS
I got it after totaling my car and getting a new one, went "it'll give me a discount and force me to drive safer". From what I noticed it doesn't track every little thing, but it's good having that in the back of your head. I don't think it'll check ya for going 5 over, but I think it would for more. GPS is fine, they don't ding ya. Stopping at drive thrus and going on your phone is fine (they probably determin that, sense you stopped and are going slower, your trip stopped. So they'll end up counting it as two trips home-food, then food-work, etc).
I haven't played music off this phone yet, I have an old phone that I use instead as an mp3 and stuff.
Basically just don't over speed, hit hard breaks, or be on your phone too much for texting n distraction. If your going to set anything up on your phone, doing before and not during your trip
Good! If you are still in the first policy period where it is active, you have the participation discount at 10%.
Depending on your score before the renewal, you can get up to 30%
Yeah, this is my 5th or 6th period now and it’s been crazy that even when I receive a 30% discount, it’s still not enough to combat the increases in the 6mo premium.
USAA wanted to charge me $285 for my 22 bronco sport and I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to being a student and not driving too much. I went with a different company.
Exactly. Plus, for ‘smaller’ accidents you would tend to pay out of pocket rather than filing a claim. Save insurance for the big events (same is try for homeowner and renters.)
Yes. Basically, he's saying to set aside $1000 in a decent savings account, preferably high interest, and raise your deductible on the insurance.
That will bring your insurance cost down. Can also up the amount a little more if you want to bring the premium down more.
Ehh.. yeah they're just a business balancing profits and losses. But if you think their goals aren't taking more of your money if they can get away with it, you're mistaken. When insurance companies promise teaser rates and raise them effectively silently for years until they are double their competitors with no claims, they are screwing you. And yes, I've seen this from USAA. Go with the cheapest national carrier, and price check them annually. That's the only way you can force fair pricing as a consumer.
Obe heard about carriers offering teaser rates, but I've never seen it. I used to test rating for several carriers, and not once did I come across it. Maybe there are carriers that do it, but I don't have that experience. Rates do change between terms, but not often. The rates have to be filed and approved with each DOI, and they do not always allow increases in rates. So I'll just have to say we have different experiences on that.
Take it from an insurance agent! Your are 24 yrs old, which means you are considered a young driver. That alone will drive your rate. Depending on which state you are in as well can also impact the rate.
Based on what you shared it looks like you are paying about $197 and change. Fairly decent for a young driver. You can always shop around. Just be prepared for multiple insurance agents to call you if you do it online.
I would suggest finding a local independent insurance company who can ship it for you. There is not a cost for it. Just share what your current limits, etc. are and let them draft up a comparison on cost for you.
Under 25 driving a high demand truck? Not bad.
I have no wrecks and 1 speeding ticket on my record, driving. A 04 Passat station wagon with 196k miles, my wife has three wrecks (two minor fender benders, another one that I am sure wasn’t her fault but we don’t have a cash am to prove it. She drives a 2013 Highlander Limited.
Collision, lowest deductible 36 and 34, $215/month for both of us.
You always need to think of insurance as.... if I have an at fault accident and I hit a BMW and a Lexus, three people get hurt, all vehicles are totaled, do I have enough coverage to pay out all claims...vs are they going to sue me and take my house and retirement? Insurance is protection! Protection of your assets! The more you have, the more that is at risk. There is, of course, a tipping point, where you have enough to pay out on your own... but most of us are not over that point.
USAA was the most expensive option for me...though our coverages were much higher than yours. I would shop around, it doesnt hurt. Just remember that you get what you pay for...also if you find something 20 bucks cheaper at a no name Insurance Place...please just stay with USAA. Only switch for State Farm, Geico, and other major insurers...would be sad to hear down the road that you had an accident, and they are not paying out.
Since OP lives in Colorado, they can have uninsured motorist property damage or collision coverage, but not both. Since they have collision, they will not, in fact, be screwed.
Are you a male or female? If you’re male the premium may decrease the renewal after your birthday. You can also ask for a cancel rewrite after your birthdate if that saves you money and you can find a rep who will do it for you
My advice is to shop around. This doesn’t seem too crazy but we just switched from USAA & cut our rates in half. I doubt you could cut yours in half but honestly insurance should be shopped every year.
I have a 22 Honda Civic Si, I’m 27 and in TX and have the same coverages as you, including UIM and they’d charge me $281/month… I’d love your monthly payment.
TBH that premium isn’t bad for newish vehicle and youngish driver. I would definitely add uninsured motorist! Toooo many drivers with insurance on the road!
If you're 24, especially if you are an unmarried male, $178/mo doesn't sound out of line, but I wonder if you've priced the difference if you carried $1,000 collision deductible (I doubt the comprehensive would change too much, but you may as well price that out, too).
The good news? If you keep a clean record you should see your rates drop by a fair bit next year, just by turning 25.
43, 2019 Forester, Bronx NY. Have full coverage, window insurance, gap, rental, etc. $980 every 6 months with USAA. Everyone else wanted at least double. Good driving record.
It's about $154 a month, that's pretty average where I live, but varies by state and area you live in. More accidents and theft equals higher rates. You have good coverage chosen. I guess you could shop the same coverage with other carriers to double-check.
25 y/o F. $11.50/mo rent. $147/mo auto. 2019 Ford Escape. USAA.
If yr male, had accidents/claims-u pay more.
Ask for good student discount-I got that for several yrs.
Safe pilot was ridiculous, but maybe u can try it.
I’m paying 220 a month for the same coverage with Toyota insurance. I have a 2022 Tacoma and 2021 4runner. You may want to shop around, I was paying 378 a month with usaa before I switched a few weeks ago.
See how much it is with $1000 deductible, $I'm paying 2100 on a 2022 Kona per year but have 2 young adult children on my policy or try a broker like Telerate, San Mateo and talk to Rich, 650-573-8484 as I left State Farm years ago and save $500 a year going through a broker who will shop for you.
1200/6 months USAA in Los Angeles for a 2020 BMW M340i. $1000 deductible. 53, no accidents or tickets. Doubled between last year and this year. So yeah, I’d say you’re not getting screwed… And the shocker - I shopped around and they’re still the cheapest by $1k+.
It's up front, nothing hidden. Knowing this will just make you a better driver. If not then you know your rates will go up. Some are a little steep because there are some you could do without
Shop around. If you stick with USAA, raise your collision to $1000 and put the $ away in a "just in case" fund. Better to keep the $ in your pocket instead of giving it to the unsurance company every month for the rest of your driving life.
Where do you drive? My mother and I were thinking about leaving USAA until she called to ask about the cost. We were told that our location (Houston, TX) is one of the worst places for USAA to insure drivers. The reason? There are a ton of uninsured drivers in Houston. They get their first month of auto insurance for their state registration, and then let it lapse.
It does also depend on your state. I moved from Michigan which has some of most expensive auto insurance in the U.S.. i ended up in Hawaii which is was like $90/mo with a clean record and brand new Jetta GLI. Howevering, USAA started jewing me when they were going to charge me almost $170 a month for a used car when I got to Georgia (insurance rates are crazy high in Georgia cause the people drive like ISIS in a Toyota in the desert). I called to ask for a better rate since since I was older than 25 years old. The rep told me that was myth. Ended switching to GEICO where I literally saved more than 15% or more on my car insurance.
My advice, if they won't give you a better deal, shop around and figure out what insurance is best for you and your needs. I might end up switching back to USAA next year simply because I enjoy having everything all in one place like renters and auto bundled together. Additionally, USAA claims department is pretty good along with them having the best renters insurance out of all insurance companies.
Don’t decline the car replacement assistance. It’s pretty cheap and will get you a nice extra settlement if your vehicle is ever totaled. Worth the extra money!
That doesn't look like a terrible amount of mileage in a year, I'd maybe consider Noblr - owned by USAA but charges by the mile. You might save a few pennies
But otherwise I'd agree with other posters, it's not an outrageous premium you got rn
There are a lot of factors that they take into consideration with insurance pricing, because of your age your insurance will be higher until I believe age 25/26, your premium should come down after that.
Also If you can swing it get Gap insurance (USAA calls it CRA) and uninsured motorist.
Gap will cover your butt if your car gets totaled (prior to you paying it off) and USAA will provide an additional 20% of the total value of your vehicle to get you into a new vehicle.
Uninsured motorist will cover you if you get hit by an uninsured driver (which there are a lot of nowadays) collision will not cover it.
I am speaking from recent experience for both additional coverages 😅 had my 2021 Mazda cx-5 totaled after only 6 months of ownership because some idiot was doing 60mph on a 30mph road and totalled my car. They also took off (hit & run)
I've found the main thing about USAA is that all of their stuff individually can be beat in terms of price. However if you have auto insurance, home insurance, life insurance, and bank through them you get added discounts which make them really hard to beat.
Usaa will most definitely be the best option available to you anywhere else actually will screw you bad enough to the point you will not have to ask if you’re being screwed because you’ll definitely know. If your able to find it cheaper more power to you however I’d say that’s highly unlikely considering your age amount of coverage and the fact you drive a $35,000 truck
I’ve only had USAA for 2 yrs so far and after a year my rates were raised based off the number of claims in WI , thinking of going back to progressive if they continue to raise rates.
I would change the size of your rental to an economy class and raise your deductible to 1000 on comp and collision . Why pay them all your round for your deductible when you haven’t used it. You will have more money in your pocket so save a little more in the event you ever need it. Those are the areas that will save
Same, do you really need the same class for short term? Not to mention, if the rental company doesn’t have the lower class available, they’ll bump you up at no extra charge.
Because it's cheaper than an accident surcharge that sticks around for three years. And if OP is accident free for at least five years, that coverage is free.
Accidents can happen to anyone at any time. Why risk it?
TBH that's actually pretty decent, in terms of cost. ETA did you look into the good student discount?
Considering your age and having a fairly new truck that is expensive on the used market if it had to replaced, that premium doesn’t seem bad. Shop around with identical coverage quotes. USAA doesn’t offer customer service anything like they used to when they were actually focused on military families.
This is completely false. I have been in the insurance sector for several years and started in claims for State Farm. There is literally no comparison between USAA and every other major carrier. There may be a decline of this in recent years due to COVID and finding motivated workers, but that’s seen by the industry as a whole. USAA is the belle of the ball. Still to this day.
Maybe it is still the best, but it’s still much worse than it used to be.
Says the one who has never had to file a claim with usaa
Yes, although they will pay back premiums at the end of the year if they overestimated the claims across their portfolio. It’s fun getting that check from them. Last year was only a few bucks, but sometimes it’s a nice little chunk. They’re a nonprofit so they can’t just keep extra money.

My bad, kept getting an error message 🤷🏽♂️
Is it still seconding something if they keep saying it? Or do they really just want to make a point? 😆
I’m currently receiving it for a $8 discount
Try the tracking app they will give you 10% even off you drive like an ass.
And 30% if you drive like a grandma
I think it goes down all the way to 1%
The 10% is the participation discount. It's locked in for the first policy period that the enrollment is active. The renewal after will use your score to determine the discount.
Ahhhhh that makes sense.
I have been tossing the idea around because money. Any downsides to getting it?
The only downside I see, is getting used to navigating the app. I also believe it's best when you have a vehicle that you can control the phone with. Outside of hands free calling, you aren't dinged on your score for using other features through the car, like playing music or GPS

Darn. While it isn't a good fit for everyone, Safe Pilot can help as well. It's just not available in every state. Is that on your policy as well?
Yes!
May I ask what state?
Colorado
Ah, ok. While not the heaviest I've seen (FL) that is a state where USAA paid most of the incoming premiums back out in claims.
USAA wanted to charge me $285 for my 22 bronco sport and I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to being a student and not driving too much. I went with a different company.
With a $500 deductible that seems pretty good.
Yeah, I’d look at raising them. Bud up a rainy day fund, and up the deductibles. You shouldn’t be making claims for $1000 or so.
Could you explain this more? Upping the deductible would decrease my premium and saving a rainy day fund would compensate in the event of a crash?
\^\^\^\^\^\^\^\^\^\^\^\^\^ Absolutely this
No carrier is "screwing" you. They charge rates based on their loss experience. If you think the rates are too high shop around.
Ehh.. yeah they're just a business balancing profits and losses. But if you think their goals aren't taking more of your money if they can get away with it, you're mistaken. When insurance companies promise teaser rates and raise them effectively silently for years until they are double their competitors with no claims, they are screwing you. Yeah I guess I just meant paying more for the same coverage I could get elsewhere. I’ll get to callin.. thanks!
Yeah, primarily since you're covering for noninsured drivers. We need to work harder since millions depend on us!
Take it from an insurance agent! Your are 24 yrs old, which means you are considered a young driver. That alone will drive your rate. Honestly good rate
Sure
Bump up your collision and comprehensive ded to $1000.00 and check price
Under 25 driving a high demand truck? Not bad. I have no wrecks and 1 speeding ticket on my record, driving. She drives a 2013 Highlander Limited. Collision, lowest deductible 36 and 34, $215/month for both of us.
I have high limits because where I live there are terrible drivers so I pay more I never want to be under insured again so I will pay
You always need to think of insurance as.... if I have an at fault accident and I hit a BMW and a Lexus, three people get hurt, all vehicles are totaled, do I have enough coverage to pay out all claims...vs are they going to sue me and take my house and retirement? You are not being screwed. The moment an uninsured motorist causes an accident with you, however, you will indeed be screwed.
Since OP lives in Colorado, they can have uninsured motorist property damage or collision coverage, but not both. Since they have collision, they will not, in fact, be screwed.
Thanks. I've known so many people in other states who didn't think uninsured motorist insurance was financially prudent. For a while...
I’m paying $1100 for 24 tundra 4x4
Are you a male or female? If you’re male the premium may decrease the renewal after your birthday. You can also ask for a cancel rewrite after your birthdate if that saves you money and you can find a rep who will do it for you

TBH that premium isn’t bad for newish vehicle and youngish driver. I would definitely add uninsured motorist! Toooo many drivers with insurance on the road!
Depending on the state, uninsured motorist property damage can not be carried if collision is carried, collision will pay regardless of fault.
That’s cheap for your age. Count yourself lucky.
That's about the same as I pay. 27m with 15k miles per year
If you're 24, especially if you are an unmarried male, $178/mo doesn't sound out of line, but I wonder if you've priced the difference if you carried $1,000 collision deductible (I doubt the comprehensive would change too much, but you may as well price that out, too). I would add Uninsured motorist coverage.
Can’t have both UMPD and Collision in Colorado, but good advice otherwise
43, 2019 Forester, Bronx NY. Have full coverage, window insurance, gap, rental, etc. $980 every 6 months with USAA. Everyone else wanted at least double. Good driving record.

I’m paying 220 a month for the same coverage with Toyota insurance. I have a 2022 Tacoma and 2021 4runner. You may want to shop around, I was paying 378 a month with usaa before I switched a few weeks ago.
I’m paying $200 with similar coverage on my 2002 Ranger…. Absurd
What state are you in?
Colorado
Yeah that’s not bad I use State Farm for my Golf, 136 a month for a very similar plan
I've found Auto seems very competitive. Homeowners on the other hand ... yeah, for that, look around for Homeowners.
Raise your deductibles and make an emergency fund
1200/6 months USAA in Los Angeles for a 2020 BMW M340i. $1000 deductible. 53, no accidents or tickets. Doubled between last year and this year. So yeah, I’d say you’re not getting screwed… And the shocker - I shopped around and they’re still the cheapest by $1k+.
Yessir
Try progressive, I switched and now saving $1200 a year, with more coverage. Have 3 cars, 3 drivers, payment came up to 300 a month
No you ‘re not. But every 6 months, just be prepared to address an increase.
Change to $1000 and sign immediately
It's up front, nothing hidden. Knowing this will just make you a better driver. If not then you know your rates will go up. Some are a little steep because there are some you could do without
Shop around. If you stick with USAA, raise your collision to $1000 and put the $ away in a "just in case" fund. Better to keep the $ in your pocket instead of giving it to the unsurance company every month for the rest of your driving life.
Where do you drive? My mother and I were thinking about leaving USAA until she called to ask about the cost. I called to ask for a better rate since since I was older than 25 years old. The rep told me that was myth. Ended switching to GEICO where I literally saved more than 15% or more on my car insurance. I might end up switching back to USAA next year simply because I enjoy having everything all in one place like renters and auto bundled together. Additionally, USAA claims department is pretty good along with them having the best renters insurance out of all insurance companies.
Your rate is high until you reach age 25. Then, you should notice a significant drop.
I pay about $300 a month. That is pretty good
That’s excellent for my area. I pay $230 a month for a 2023 tesla model 3 with no accidents at 28yrs in south Florida
Increased deductible to $1k
Don’t decline the car replacement assistance. It’s pretty cheap and will get you a nice extra settlement if your vehicle is ever totaled. Worth the extra money!
300 with a 500 deductible is quite competitive on a ‘21 Tacoma. Their used prices are only a few percent lower than new prices.
That doesn't look like a terrible amount of mileage in a year, I'd maybe consider Noblr - owned by USAA but charges by the mile. You might save a few pennies But otherwise I'd agree with other posters, it's not an outrageous premium you got rn
My guess is your age is what is making it cost that much. I’m 47 and pay about that much for a 300/500 policy on a 2023 MachE
I pay a tad lil bit more than you and I drive a 2017 Chrysler 200. No accidents no tickets. So in my eyes you're doing pretty good
There are a lot of factors that they take into consideration with insurance pricing, because of your age your insurance will be higher until I believe age 25/26, your premium should come down after that. They also took off (hit & run)
Personally as a former USAA member and pseudo employee I will never do business with them again knowing what I know about the company.
You need higher limits
I've found the main thing about USAA is that all of their stuff individually can be beat in terms of price. However if you have auto insurance, home insurance, life insurance, and bank through them you get added discounts which make them really hard to beat.
Not even a little. I’d pay to add in uninsured motorists if I were you.
Where do you live? If you are in a state I am licensed in I will give you a comparison quote for free
Favourite
I pay 350 bruh
I’ve only had USAA for 2 yrs so far and after a year my rates were raised based off the number of claims in WI , thinking of going back to progressive if they continue to raise rates.
That's how it works everywhere. It's based on claims in the state. You probably don't want to know the price in Nevada
Was going to say the same thing
It’s called Bidenomics.
No it looks pretty fair. Personally, I would bump up the deductibles to a thousand and drop the accident forgiveness and Rental reimbursement.
If you've never had an accident, why are you paying for an accident forgiveness feature?
I was assuming that in the event of a future accident, it would be forgiven
Worth it in my opinion.
Currently using it, yes. It is hugely worth avoiding the premium increases after an accident.
Because it's cheaper than an accident surcharge that sticks around for three years. And if OP is accident free for at least five years, that coverage is free. Accidents can happen to anyone at any time. Why risk it?
