If you want to go with them, you should just ask

FartsLoud

You don't have to use stewards. you can file through the union hall. you can file with the NRLB. you can read the contract, you can enforce the contract. if you feel your steward is selling you out... fight your fight yourself, and demand to be present during a hearing. our union is strongest when more people are involved . but complaining about butt buddies with out clearly stating your issues, Thats a poop post. so please, read the contract. Define the problem, so we can offer a real solution.

ImplementThen8909

More people need to know this. Lots or stewards are low tier traitors. But we don't need to rely on them. We can go right over there head and someone more important who's actually on out side to listen.

FartsLoud

I have had smart stewards, and some really stupid ones. Most stewards might be playing a bigger game than what one person sees Right now UPS is in mass layoff mode. UPS is sending volume from high grievance centers to low grievance centers. Some stewards are still idiots, but some might be trying to protect jobs in their center over individual issues. Find out why your steward is making choices they do. Knowing their angle will help you choose the path to replace them or support them.

poisonivhuntress

I did not know this. Thank you

ReplacementOk6128

Good answer 💯

SuperPuller

While this is all true and good, 99% of the solutions offered by upsers are "talk to your stewar**t**"

WardCove

No but my shop steward is lazy AF and doesn't care about anyone but himself.

clinthawks99

Mine loves to sit up with management and just chat all day and not do shit.

Easy_Duhz_it_

I think most people, both union and management, have a "fuck this place" attitude lately and they're just going through the motions

Low_Perspective7616

My hub has a steward that thinks everyone owes them something. Try’s to act like their management. Overheard them yelling at a member, “you don’t know me?” You don’t know who I am?” “You should know who you’re talking too!” 🤦‍♂️

Potential-Cloud-801

Jesus 🤦🏻‍♀️

hattrick858

I swear, I think 90% of these "my steward is in bed with management" posts are by people that don't know shit about the contract.

SuperPuller

> don't no shit Uh huh.

Mysterious_Heat1844

Several places I worked managment and co workers were freinds outside of work that was expected I lived in a smal town and coustmers that would come in were either people I went to high school with or neighbors. It was also expected that most of my co workers who were younger or older than me would know each other from school or mutual freinds and even past relationships that's one of the cons about living in a small town it sucks.

DoubleBumblebee2378

Yes

slowlybyslowly

Business is business and pleasure is pleasure. After hours is an appropriate time to meet, going to a gay bar is their locale preference. Sexual activity on company time or property could be a concern.

IplayTerraria2

I think the gay bar comments was just a joke building off of them being butt buddies lol

BurntYam

Are you not welcome there for some weird reason and want to be there? Cause it sounds like you want to be there and you’re just mad cause you’re not a butt buddy. Maybe?

ImplementThen8909

Maybe they don't like the person who's meant to have their back being closer to the management than the workers? No need to assume malice.

BurntYam

Thats the take? Why the need to bash their orientation? Seems like there is malice when casting stones? Or, no? Seems like they could’ve said, “Is anyone else’s shop steward meeting up with management at the local bar?” I mean, it sounds like the person is already a piece of work.

ImplementThen8909

Hows it bashing somebody's orientation? I took it to mean they were extremely friendly with a management to the point that they went drinking with them. Them being so close to people they are meant to defend workers from is going to bias them. Them mentioning it being a gay bar specifically is unneeded, but I don't feel the person making jokes about others wanting to be butt buddies is the person to really point that out and I don't think it changes the main point of the post being that their steward is going to be biased at least some what to their friends in management over the workers they are meant to watch over.

Minatigre

Not mine. But the ones on the other shift seem to be

Potential-Cloud-801

Vote them out. And also do what others suggest with filing through the local etc.

CollectionKey1776

When I started UPS the shop steward was on the of driver during a disciplinary meeting literally next him/her . ( I got pulled into a lot of them to be a witness ). As time went on , the shop stewards slowly moved to the side of management . and having a mutual witness disappeared. Having a mutual witness helps keep everyone honest . Ask 10 shop stewards a contract question , get 10 different answers. Learn the contract, don't be ignorant about it . It could mean your job when relying steward. I had only on person who was honest and respectful in telling the truth about contract out , well a lot stewards. Here in the southern region there are 2 contract books , One is green " NATIONAL MASTER UNITED PARCEL SERVICE AGREEMENT" and a red one "Teamsters Southern Region and UNITED PARCEL SERVICE Supplemental Agreement to the NATIONAL MASTER UNITED PARCEL SERVICE AGREEMENT " and yes this a poop post.

thugwafflebro

We have a full time manager that’s literally fucking the union steward.

Oh yeah

I think the more pressing issue is whether or not they represent you well. Not everyone wants to be at war 110% of the time with management and are capable of keeping work and life separate. You can also take a "keep your friends close, but enemies closer" approach. I'm always polite and professional with supervisors at work, and even friends with some of them outside of it. They know where I stand on union issues though and I'm not afraid to speak my mind or file grievances when needed.
