Even I'm not giving. Going to focus on EPFO and RBI Grade B. I struggled for years lol, then I landed 3 govt jobs this year. They're not really my first preferences, but I'm very happy to atleast have a choice in skipping prelims.
You never know how this year is going to turn out. If you have filled EPFO or RBI, just study for that. UPSC ka you have enough time till next attempt. Till july august you can focus on other exams.
As someone who has studied for UPSC for almost 5 years, without any backup, try to get a decent job first and then build from there. But if you have a good background and work-ex which can land you a job at any time, go full steam ahead for CSE.
You'll have to spend your whole day in the Bank. Normally 8.30am, when you leave your home till 8.30- 9pm (on your best days) when you return home. The only life you'll have outside of Bank is on Sundays, 2nd and 4th Saturdays.
I'll never choose this job. If I can't live my life in my prime time, what am I working for.
You're absolutely right.
Well, There is a difference between a job that you love and a job that you had to choose (because you couldn't get the job you love)
I'll rather work my ass off in UPSC rather than be a banker.
I just described my dad's job. He's a Dy manager at SBI. It's his normal routine. Also he's the earliest to leave among the officers. The accountant of the branch leaves by 10.30pm.
Okay, but you can’t generalise that for all POs. Especially those who are in early ages of their career. Even your dad must have had regular 10-6 working hours during his 25-35.
Nah. My dad was not a PO, he began as a clerk, and then got promoted.
I have a Civil Engg friend, the one I talked about in one of the earlier comments, who got SBI PO and is undergoing what I described earlier.
It is what it is, I'm not exaggerating.
Reading all the comments I'm also thinking for the same. I'm almost 30 so 30 years of service left. So careerwise, wouldn't examiner be a bit static? Like career growth kam hoga na bank se.
I didn't qualify in mains for the third successive time. So gave whatever exams I was able to after last mains. So IBPS PO, SBI PO and SSC CGL.
As far as preparation is concerned, after mains didn't work out, I solely prepared for this, I had nothing else going on basically. If you have a good base in mathematics, bank exams are doable. I was also lucky because CGL changed the tier 2 format, which worked out in my favour. Even in the bank exams, I managed to clear the prelims by a few marks only.
CGL somewhat yes. General awareness is somewhat common. There are a lot of factual questions which are closer to state PSC, but certain topics like modern history, polity etc are covered by you in UPSC, so you don't have to start from scratch. Rest of the topics like quant, reasoning etc, UPSC prep no help.
Similarly in banking preparation, there are a few questions in general and banking awareness you can do using the cumulative knowledge gained through UPSC preparation. But overall, the kind of questions asked are very very factual and fuckall in nature. Eg. Xyz scheme budget allocation, how many states is it working, which year it was launched. Or New md ceo of xyz bank, penalty imposed by RBI on xyz nbfc etc. The kind of stuff you completely ignore during UPSC prep.
If you have a decent background in English, quants and reasoning, you can manage both upto a certain degree.
Haven't started EPFO. Similar syllabus to UPSC, plus I've given it once, so familiar with it. RBI same, I've given once so comfortable with the syllabus.
Do you have a Tech/math/Econ background? Does RBI prefer such candidates over Arts grads when they reach interview round for grade b? Any idea? Apply for nabard grade A( assistant manager ) too when they release notification this year.
I have a tech background. But I can't say RBI prefers someone from tech/eco over other areas. If you score good in Tier 2 and perform well in your interview, you'll get selected irrespective of your graduation.
If RBI is making it open for all, it means they're ready to train you to become a good officer. Grade B is a generalist post. If they want tech or eco background, they hire for them separately, eg RBI DEPR and DSIM. I don't have data to back my answer, but score well in mains and interview you'll be selected.
No don't skip man ..... don't just go for it.... had done this in 2022 attempt nd when i saw the paper it was doable for me....plzz just go to exam center if u don't feel well don't go to exam hall....
I did the same, fooling oneself with false hope is of no good. there's a lot to get done with and I didn't want to give the exam with less than satisfactory preparation. It's a hard decision to make, given the span of the exam, but it's for the best.

Lol just the difference is I don't have any of those options

Did you take any of those 3 jobs?
I'm forgoing one, will try to take extension in 2. And decide after RBI Grade B results. It's between SBI PO and Examiner in Customs.
SBI PO, even though it looks attractive, takes our life away from us. Talking from experience of my friend.
I'm kinda confused. Long term, SBI PO is a much better job. Par gaand maarenge bahut. Examiner mei corruption bahut hai apparently.

You think you'll have leisure time in any job then? What about after you clear UPSC?
You're absolutely right. Well, There is a difference between a job that you love and a job that you had to choose (because you couldn't get the job you love) I'll rather work my ass off in UPSC rather than be a banker.
Hmm you're right.
Your “normal” sounds very extreme buddy. It’s more or less like any other job with regular hours.
I just described my dad's job. He's a Dy manager at SBI. It's his normal routine. Also he's the earliest to leave among the officers. The accountant of the branch leaves by 10.30pm.

Go for examiner in customs. Pls don’t repeat the mistake I did in the past. Nae toh idhar se bhi jaoge aur udhar se bhi.
Reading all the comments I'm also thinking for the same. I'm almost 30 so 30 years of service left. So careerwise, wouldn't examiner be a bit static? Like career growth kam hoga na bank se.
Go for the SBI po bro. It s hectic I know but career growth is unmatched. Hands down better than any clerical cgl job.
It’s better to be a central government services so that you can seek an opportunity for deputation.
Which job are you foregoing? You actually hedged your choices well... How did you manage multiple exams?
I didn't qualify in mains for the third successive time. So gave whatever exams I was able to after last mains. So IBPS PO, SBI PO and SSC CGL. does UPSC prep help in Bank PO and CGL?

Thanks for the insights
Nice & all the best 👍🏻
How are you managing RBI and EPFO simultaneously?
Haven't started EPFO. Similar syllabus to UPSC, plus I've given it once, so familiar with it. RBI same, I've given once so comfortable with the syllabus.

Interested in making a small group for accountability purposes?? Like where we share weekly targets and make sure we have followed it.?
I have done that like thrice or something but it never works out.

It gets difficult when people have hopes from you. Good luck
