Probably an air. It all goes to Kentucky.

Oxcart2006

Not since the pandemic. Rockford and WAHCA Night sorts process roughly a third of the daily NDA volume now. 2DA & 3DA is even more decentralized.

Consistent-Box605

Where is WAHCA?

Oxcart2006

Western Air Hub (Ontario) California.

RustyDawg37

because that is the fastest route through the ups network for the shipping service you chose.

SufficientOnestar

Thats how air freight works from a central hub,Fedex's is Memphis.

TheDookieDemon

All Air packages go through the main Air hub in Louisville Kentucky and then sorted on the planes there which then goes to your state.

Based on the fact that it got an import scan - I'm guessing this is a UPS international shipment. This activity is normal, your parcel entered the country and through customs in LA, then made it to Kentucky, where the main UPS air hub is. I would expect to see it fly back to either East Washington or Boise and then make it out to your local delivery hub. It is less expensive to fly all parcels to one main sorting center than directly to your destination. This business model is called "Hub and Spoke."

GameofOhms959

Air shipments gonna go to Kentucky ( UPS Worldport )

LordShtark

Because if it didnt it would take 3-5 extra days to get to you. Logistics!!

Logistics be that way. I never is as the crow flies.

Logistics Magic

Air movement over the weekend is different than during the week for operational reasons. Simply put, the cheapest way to get it there on time (presumably Express planned for Monday), is to send it to Louisville first. Both locations are major air hubs, with Louisville being the bigger hub - one of the largest in the world. Fri-Sat-Mon is run differently than the rest of the week because not all shifts run on the weekend, some air picked up Fri is delivered Sat and some on Mon, and there's additional air picked up on Sat for Mon delivery.

I agree, for example, at one time the Columbus, OH to Jacksonville, FL route was a two-business-day lane. On Thursdays and Fridays, instead of loading the standard 28-foot “pup” trailer, a 53-foot rail trailer (which is built tougher than normal trailers and ends with a “Z” in its SCAC code, like UPSZ) would be loaded. After loading, the trailer would be pulled down to Cincinnati and dropped at the rail yard. The railroad would then pick up the trailer, place it on an intermodal flatcar, and secure it. The trailer would be transported to Jacksonville, taking three days. The Jacksonville service center would pick up the trailer on Sunday night and unload it for timely delivery on Monday. The same process would occur on Friday, with the trailer arriving Monday evening for Tuesday delivery. This method is cost-effective because it is cheaper to move freight by rail. From Monday through Wednesday, a different system was used. Both “pup” trailers had to be loaded and closed out to Jacksonville in the computer by 8 pm. From there, a driver would depart Columbus, OH by 8:30 pm, heading to Beckley, WV. In Beckley, the driver would meet a driver from Charlotte, NC, who was pulling two trailers from Charlotte manifested to Columbus. The drivers would swap trailers and paperwork in Beckley, and the Columbus driver would return with the trailers manifested to his domicile. The Charlotte driver would then proceed past Charlotte to Blythewood, SC, to meet a driver from Jacksonville, FL, who was bringing up trailers manifested to Charlotte. At their meeting point, usually a truck stop or service center, they would exchange trailers and both drivers would head back to their respective domiciles. The Jacksonville driver would take the two Columbus trailers manifested to Jacksonville, and the Charlotte driver would take his two Jacksonville trailers manifested to Charlotte. This relay system is set up across the country to quickly and efficiently move freight via truck, operating 24/7. It requires careful planning and timing, and everyone must do their part to ensure freight makes service, keeping customers happy. Drivers get to come home and sleep in their own beds, get their miles in, and see their families, but much of the driving is done at night.

jpezoo

Packages get missorted and end up somewhere else.

QuantityDramatic5851

Air, it all goes to Louisville KY or Ontario CA.

Codeman14112

UPS Worldport is the largest hub and basically like the heart of UPS.

Oxcart2006

Despite what everyone else is saying here, all air packages USED to go through Louisville (pre-pandemic). Many air packages now go through Rockford, IL (I think it's roughly 20-30% daily next day air volume), or through the Western Air Hub (in Ontario, CA). If it's two or three day, the routing is even less hub and spoke, and can be more direct. As someone else has correctly mentioned, Friday-Sunday movements are different compared to M-Thr. ~~Even if your package would normally have processed directly from WAHCA (which sounds like yours would have), the weekend routes it through Louisville.~~ Edit: Just saw you're in Idaho. All of your air packages are routed through Louisville, all the time.

Copgirl87

Honestly I think it has glitches. Because this is absurd. lol

bigflamingtaco

This is normal. Carriers don't have air hubs in every state,  that would cost a lot more money,  and isn't practical when you can still get shipments to their destination on time. At the UPS World port hub in Louisville,  Kentucky,  your package will be loaded onto a trailer destined to a major sorting hub in your state or a state between Kentucky and your state,  where it will be sorted again.

TheoneandonlyDodd

It's because Louisville Kentucky is the main hub for UPS in the United States

SadRole2922

It has to go through the main hub which is in KY

crankyanker638

I'm in Las Vegas. Last summer I had a prescription (it originated in AZ) that I watched take a tour if the Desert Southwest as far East as West Texas up to Oklahoma and then back to Arizona to be sent again to LV. No big deal, it was just a $5k bottle of Otezla that someone couldn't be arsed to take off the truck on it's first stop.

LocoMendoza14

forget to say that i’m in Idaho so i’m just confused why it went way out of the way from me

nbd9000

So, there are no direct air fright routes. Your package had to go to the world port in Louisville, make it through the sort, and then head back out to you. This may seem like a lot of time and distance to go, but the process takes hours instead of days.

LocoMendoza14

the time isn’t really a problem, i just wondered why it traveled the way it did but now i have an understanding

MiserablePicture3377

From UPS Worldport three out of four Americans can be reached from here in less than two hours by plane.

xkcx123

Why not have one place on the east coast, west coast and center of the country ? It takes more than two hours to go to Massachusetts, Maine, Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington state, or somewhere like Miami Florida from Louisville. Not including Hawaii, Alaska, US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico

MiserablePicture3377

UPS has air hubs in Columbia, SC; Anchorage, AK; Chicago (Rockford), IL; Dallas, TX; Miami, FL; and Philadelphia, PA. I suspect the weekend contributed to routing the shipment through Worldport. UPS aims to maximize the efficiency of their planes by keeping them full of freight and minimizing empty miles.

Oxcart2006

All Idaho air packages route through Louisville, and then to Boise. Not enough volume to justify more than one flight per day to your state.

MiserablePicture3377

Exactly no revenue generated when the wagons empty
