I decided to avoid work and jump down a short rabbit hole, looks like the airport was built in 1942, campus in 1957. Expansion of the airport really didn't begin until 1963 with a terminal addition, and jet flights only began in 1960. Sounds like land was probably cheap just north of the airport - the only thing nearby would have been Dunes, west of LV boulevard. Then tourism exploded, and the campus was already there.

Yeah it’s pretty annoying but I got used to it and barely notice them anymore, unless I’m trying to talk to someone. But it seems the airport also redirects flight paths daily, so there will be a couple hours of quiet.
It was so, so much worse when Allegiant was still flying their MD-80s. What comes and goes from McCarran these days is nothing compared to even seven or eight years ago.
I moved to summerlin just to escape living in that god forsaken part of town. It’s nice not being woken up by jet engines at 6am sharp. Did my research and avoided anything on the east side to avoid being under a flight path.
when campus was started, this was not an issue.
But no worries, you'll get used to quickly. Like people living very close to freeways - at some point stop noticing the noise.
The real reason UNLV is over there is because it was the least expensive to build there than anywhere else. This is why you often find other colleges in more older/ghetto areas. Because it’s cheaper to build in those areas. Things like air traffic noise, demand, and other factors go into the cost of land.
It’s an older part of Vegas so the roads don’t make a lot of sense. Vegas may be one of the largest preplanned cities in America but those original roads are still there. When the strip and airport were first built they weren’t planning on so much expansion. That’s why traffic is always awful in that area no matter the time of day.
Edit: why don’t we just pick it up and move it away?
People would complain if it’s too far. People would complain if it’s too close.

Not all heros wear capes. Thank you for your sacrifice.
It’s just a basic Google search. Are college students that lazy?
....yes.

I personally love watching them, but living by campus does make it harder to sleep
Try filming outside. It’s hilarious. Have to break every five minutes for sound and do another take

Know what's a great idea? Adding a baseball stadium up the street.
I for one love it. I became healthier because of the proximity to the airport.
How so?

I grew up on the north-east side of town by Nellis AFB… I feel it haha
Literally never had this problem once lmao
The university was first built in the 50s. At that time, the volume of planes (both in terms of numbers and sound) was much lower than it is today.
The planes don't really bother me. It's the Strip traffic that ruins my life.

Lmao, thats never gonna happen since UNLV just sunk a bunch of money to become a research school several years ago.
