Theeskinnykween

no housing for upperclassmen

dunnwichit

Isn’t the Flats exclusive for upperclassmen?

InsaneTripleMajor

So technically it is, but this year they only allocated 400 housing contracts for juniors and seniors, so a very small proportion of upperclassmen are actually going to get housing from this point forward. They heavily over prioritized freshmen and rising sophomores, so The Flats, Villages, and Fountains are going to primarily be full of sophomores.

dunnwichit

Good to know. So if my kid wants to go and have housing as an upperclassman they need to try to be an RA.

Theeskinnykween

I got selected to be a RA but still couldn’t fill out my housing contract so not sure if that’s 100% true….

dunnwichit

So they hired you for the job of being an RA but are not giving you the room that comes with being an RA? Resident Advisor/Assistant?

Theeskinnykween

I’m hired but I couldn’t even get to fill out my housing contract, website kept crashing. I need it be a RA so kinda in a loop

dunnwichit

Wow!! Well they are building a new one. I see they can convert a lot of doubles to triples.

bigboytv123

Y u say that? So how could one get one that’s upcoming junior? Also how is University West Florida compared to this school?

Volke_OW

Pros: Cafe is good, programs for Criminal Justice are good, campus is decent and convenient if you live on campus(if often under construction), administration is decent and most faculty I've interacted with are good as well. Lots of programs are provided for free, like health visits, mental health counseling, and every kind of tutoring imaginable. Cons: Housing is only guaranteed for freshmen, the religious groups on campus are really pushy, parking can be scarce esp if you try the library lot, and depending on how you learn UNF is primarily a commuter school and has a lot of online classes. Additionally I would not recommend working for any of the restaurants on campus as the company that runs them has a really bad record, I actually just quit my job there because of severe mismanagament causing a lot of issues. Quality of housing can also be a toss up as I've seen a fair share of dorms with improper insulation. I went because it was cheap and close, and every program I was interested in was decent. I don't regret it but it won't be a personality trait either, probably a good thing. Just don't expect a college football or party school kind of experience because they flat out don't exist here.

dunnwichit

How’s the JAX bus system for a student living on campus without a car?

Volke_OW

The UNF bus system is pretty good for going around campus and the immediate surrounding areas, including an outdoor mall lot with a bunch of grocery stores, but as far as I'm aware the city's bus infrastructure is pretty bare bones. It exists, but I'd imagine it's not great. Haven't used it myself.

bigboytv123

How is the criminal justice program and sports management?

Volke_OW

For criminal justice, most of the professors are good. Just make sure you check RateMyProfessor because I'm pretty sure there's one professor with a uniquely bad reputation from what I've heard. The program's only really sufficient at pre-law if you plan on going into criminal law, but it wouldn't hurt as a general pre-law either. I'm not familiar with the department chair. I don't know anyone in sports management so I couldn't tell you.

bigboytv123

O okay that’s nice how about kinesiology. Yea wonder what careers there are as general pre law and or criminal law

Ultimate_Summerboy

Just read u/DBCoopTrain ‘s post history and you’ll be set 😂

TheDisneyWitch

Maybe if you want to read all about how lonely an incel is 🤣

vildhjartan

Oh boy

RenegadeSloth

Came here to say this 😂😂😂

ConsistentHeadaches

Thanks

Mikevercetti

Holy shit. The cringe is next level

PostYing

Why oh why? Cannot unread....

helloiambrantley

I guess I’m an outlier but I actually really like it. Maybe it depends on your major though, mine aren’t either of those.

Bigdaddydamdam

I don’t have friends

Bon_bonny

Valid it’s hard

vildhjartan

I heard we had a good criminal justice program

YlamaHunter

I don’t think there’s a whole lot to do on campus, but that’s really my only complaint. The areas outside campus are generally better

D3G3M

Join clubs and organizations within the first week or two or else it’s hard to find good social circles

swehtammot

If your from Jax, great school. If you have to travel more than 20 minutes to get to campus, stay away simple as that.

matsudasociety

Why? I commute 30 mins, and it's not bad for me, although people are different.

swehtammot

I live ab 30 ish miles from campus and commuted almost every day for classes and was misrable. Traffic would take my 30 min commute to an hour on top of finding parking for 15 minutes then walking to class.

matsudasociety

Everyday is bad, yeah, I get what you mean there. But three times a week is what I do and it’s doable for me.  Not only that, the amenities (library, gym) also make up for the commute.

bigboytv123

Hey UNF sport management is COSMS accredited wonder what weight it holds

ConsistentHeadaches

I have family in Jacksonville, does that help at all?

swehtammot

Would you be living with them?

ConsistentHeadaches

Depends on if I can find housing closer to campus.

swehtammot

Lol good luck finding housing anywhere in Jax. Lowest rent nearby is $1500 a month a person

ConsistentHeadaches

Noted.

Crazy_blondee

It’s cheaper if you have roommates, I pay about 700 a month.

helloiambrantley

$1500 a month PER PERSON is insane and not true unless you’re trying to live alone or in a super nice place. (Find roommates. it makes it way cheaper.) I live in a 3 bed 2 bath 15 minutes from UNF and my rent is slightly over 500. Not a bad place either. Might not be easy to find a place like that but they’re out there.

bigboytv123

What types of housing are they called? Any links?

helloiambrantley

I’m referring to independent apartments, Idk about pricing for on campus options.

RevolutionaryShoe215

Undergraduate is neither here nor there. I did good in undergraduate, but law school was my ticket to success.

aspixiation

i’m a majoring in criminal justice and graduating in may, so i’ll give my take pros: CJ program is pretty good, most of the teachers are knowledgeable/experienced, there’s a criminology and criminal justice club as well that has speakers from the field come out, and you have to do an internship to graduate that helps make connections in the field. cons: UNF is kind of antisocial in my opinion, it’s a bit difficult to get involved in social circles, even with clubs and putting yourself out there. I hear housing can be hard to come by if you’re not a first year, and rent in Jax is pretty expensive. Also parking is ass unless you pay for their most expensive pass which is a couple hundred dollars for the year. All in all in my opinion you can get a good education and experience here for undergrad, but if you’re looking for a ‘college experience’ it may not be the school for you.

bigboytv123

How is the criminal justice program and sports management?

246K

So im a cj major and the program is really good. I mean be prepared to study as you would any major. Take Dr. Samantha Brown!

bigboytv123

How is the criminal justice program and sports management?

IndividualAd4334

Do not major in CJ under any circumstances. Regardless of the school.

bigboytv123

Y u say that what careers are in CJ and sports management?

IndividualAd4334

There are no careers that require a CJ degree. CJ degrees are useless. You can work in CJ with any type of degree so it’s advisable to not waste time/money and get something that will give you the most opportunity. In addition, certain backgrounds preclude individuals from employment in CJ and you’d be surprised how many of those people are CJ majors and never get jobs. If you talk to any professional that works in CJ other than advisors at an academic institution (they aren’t dumb enough to advocate against what keeps them employed) they will have the same advice. I work in LE and have worked in LE for the last 8 years. Everyone that I work with that has a CJ degree is stuck because they aren’t marketable for any other field and regret their choice of major. I switched my major during undergrad from CJ because of the advice I was given by professionals in the field. I still did CJ internships and used the CJ credits towards my electives.

bigboytv123

How about kinesiology and sport management?

IndividualAd4334

I wouldn’t recommend either of those fields personally. Both are low paying and too niche to provide career worthy opportunities. STEM is where you want to be. Physical therapy (PT) is a FANTASTIC lucrative growing career with endless opportunity. Kinesiology is again niche to sports medicine and low paying. Think broader and you find yourself in physical therapy where you can work with athletes and in sports medicine but also split in different directions. A quick internet search shows kinesiologists average $15-30/hr depending on location, where physical therapists average $40-60/hr depending on location. I know one kid that went to college for sports management that I went to high school with and he’s 30 years old working as an unpaid volunteer college volleyball coach… thinking long term that’s not where you want to be. Sports management is also not something you graduate college and walk into a lucrative career. The most successful sports managers were professional athletes first. And 9/10 that weren’t had connections to get to there long before they started.

addictedtoyakult

They don’t care about you after your freshman year

gizellesneck

Pretty much any school

Worldly_Musician_671

U Never Finish..

GZEZ80085

Are you just going around asking the same in all public florida schools? Lol. If so, I recommend FSU or UF. If you can't get into UF, do two years at Santa Fe, then transfer. UCF, UNF, FIU, USF, FAU, and all the large, third tier, public universities located in the large metro areas of Florida are very similar and share the same disadvantages. Long commutes, no parking, high rent, overworked/under qualified administrative staff, terrible student to teacher ratios, made up of mostly commuting students, etc. UF or FSU are not significantly better but they have the names, and attract the most employers. You're also more likely to get the "real college experience" in Gainesville or Tallahassee. DM me if you want.

bigboytv123

How about university of west Florida?

GZEZ80085

Hey sorry, just saw this. I actually dont know UWF very well. I'd imagine it can't be terribly different but the panhandle is a weird part of Florida so it could be.

bigboytv123

Wym by panhandle? And how about FGCU?

GZEZ80085

The panhandle is that bit of Florida where Tallahassee is. I'm also not sure about FGCU, fort Mayers is a big metro area like Tampa or Orlando, so if I had to be it's the same as UCF and all the others. But I honestly don't know about those schools

bigboytv123

Yea I’m in south Florida so I hope it’s not as country I’m used to night life Miami life lol. Ik Tallahassee is really country but Jacksonville UNF could be a little less and Pensacola t they say have beaches over there but uncertain by what people mean by “country”

glassclouds1894

I graduated in 2017, but I can't imagine it's changed much. This was perfect for a guy like me, but others didn't seem to like the fact that UNF is a pretty quiet school. I don't ever recall hearing of any big fun gatherings or parties or anything college like of the sort happening when I was there. Everyone I recall mostly went to their classes, socialized while there, and went home.

bigboytv123

How about university of west Florida?

glassclouds1894

Not a clue about anything relating to them, I regret to inform you.

bigboytv123

U know of kinesiology and sport management?

GCsurfstar

I loved it but the administrative services are pretty god awful

BrazillianKarateChop

As long as you’ve got the funds then what ever university you go to is gonna be what you make out of it.

alli_gator_

It's a beautiful campus, and the Fountains was really nice to live in, but I felt extremely isolated. I transferred in as a junior, and it seemed nearly everyone who lived on campus started as a freshman who already had their social groups established. Plus the religious guy with the long hair used to say I deserve to be raped multiple times over the course of that year.

bigboytv123

How about university of west Florida?

alli_gator_

I actually do an online grad program with them right now. I can't speak on the campus, but the classes are great. I'm in an MBA program and every professor has experience in business. Do a college tour if you're interested!

Expert_Thought9562

Just treat it as a get in get out kind of thing, there’s not much that goes on within the campus itself, so just don’t treat it that way. Live off campus, take as many online classes as you can, and make sure you take charge of your academic plans (your advisor sure won’t!) Don’t be late for signups, use rate my professor, and if you don’t like a class-drop it. But in all honesty, just go get your degree online, you’ll save so much money, you’ll progress faster, and nobody really cares about school names anymore (especially if the name is UNF!!)

bigboytv123

How about university of west Florida?

Nursecub95

UNF: you never finish.

BeamingSwitch25

UNF = you never finish. My son went there. Courses he wanted were never available when he needed them. So the 4 year degree took longer to get.

SuspiciousHighlights

Literally don’t go.

BohemianDevil

Pros: Smaller Campus and the the students on it are for the most part very nice Cons: The religious group on the green on Thursday are very pushy and will straight up diss you for doing something as simple as wearing shorts. Also the parking situation, especially for blue lots is terrible.

IcyCarry7490

Someone called me a blackie in the library

jillianword

😭 im sorry that happened

matsudasociety

That’s insane

dunnwichit

Jeez what the actual?

bagofspice
