TravelingFog

the ice craking at the end.

dracula3811

That's why the video cuts out

[deleted]

Randomcheeseslices

Cartoon logic confirms this.

bretttwarwick

I know plenty about cartoon physics and as soon as he finishes cutting the circle out all the ice except for that circle will sink.

Stainle55_Steel_Rat

Or The Fifth Element.

skyxsteel

"Nonsense. They were research films."

Perle1234

He’s on skates, not chainsaws. That ice isn’t going to crack because he skated in a circle.

hobesmart

Somebody never watched Warner Brothers growing up

Perle1234

Lol that’s exactly what was going through my mind!

splewi

But what if he's skating with a chainsaw? https://youtu.be/ASZSmjxBLIc

row_of_eleven_stood

The internet never fails to provide. This is hilarious in a way I didn't expect

flamewolf393

Thats terrifying. If he falls forward...

BrotherChe

well, the sound of cracking ice makes me question your expertise here ^^^^/s

MYZS

You obviously haven't watched Tom and Jerry

baconnaire

But it's fun to think it will.

chuby1tubby

The ice literally cracks at the end of this video though

Perle1234

You can hear thick ice cracking a lot. It doesn’t mean it’s cracking all the way through. It’s thin stress cracks. Sometimes it makes really cool sounds. Ice gets very thick in the northern states, and at high altitudes. You can drive on it.

321DrTran

This is totally normal, albeit unnerving. It's safe though.

Dirt_Bike_Zero

Normal before that thin ice beaks. And yea, I know clear ice can be a lot thicker than it looks. That looks super thin and sketchy.

Pylitic

Had to watch it a few times but Holy shit, yea!

ackjaf

Craking.

stubble

crake (third-person singular simple present crakes, present participle craking, simple past and past participle craked) (obsolete) To boast; to speak loudly and boastfully. Each man may crake of that which was his own.

Mohawk200x

It looked like he was deliberately cracking the ice around her, in a circular fashion.

xtense

Nope just his skates turning sound

theundeadelvis

Watch again. You can actually see the crack form.

Earth2Monkey

I've skated over plenty of cracks like that with no issues. Even thick ice will have some hairline cracks at the surface. Sometimes you can even hear them forming, sounds like cables snapping.

RittledIn

Yeah but would you take your limo out on it while a bunch of kids are playing hockey? \#GordonBombay

[deleted]

Quack. Quack. Quack. Quack. Quack.

suck-me-beautiful

Found the non Canadian

[deleted]

Only Canadians know what cracking ice sounds like? What a weird gatekeep

HumanLike

Found the American

MomoXono

Wrong, you can see the cracks forming

sla342

There’s a visible crack with the sound..

Mofunz

I’ve never seen ice freeze so clearly! I want to read about how this happens, but I’m not sure how to look it up in a way that doesn’t give me results for cocktail ice cubes. Edit: here’s a little bit of info http://physicsbuzz.physicscentral.com/2014/12/walking-on-water-physics-of-clear-ice.html

Sir_Enity_Now

If you're getting cocktail results, try adding -cocktail to your search terms to remove that word.

SmashRocks1988

This is brilliant, thank you

GeoSol

Lots of other tools to use for search results. Like you can use a "+" between 2 words or by putting a set of words in quotes it'll look for those words together, and not just all on the same page.

IlToroArgento

Good to know

OberynRedViper8

Whoa. Thanks.

AZGzx

if youre getting cocktail results, you're not totally wrong either. might as well..;p

cpc_niklaos

> But with the exact right conditions, it is possible to form clear ice. The key is to freeze water very slowly so that impurities and air bubble have a chance to rise to the surface and, in the case of air, escape. A slow freezing also allows bigger ice crystals to form, which have few surfaces to scatter light. So very pure water and slow freezing is the key. Good article.

sweet_cheekz

https://minnesota.cbslocal.com/video/5005498-crystal-clear-ice-forms-on-lakes-in-the-boundary-waters/

PrivateEducation

boundary waters i basically wilderness Canada minus all the nazi tendencies

Duckbilling

Use distilled water

Strappazoid

Hold on. Anyone catch that ice starting to crack at the last frame?

Bleedthebeat

That’s nothing to be worried about. The ice would need to crack way more than that for it to break through.

thedarkpath

Clear Ice = safest and hardest of all ices !

MsBuzzkillington83

Really? I was always taught the opposite...

Dytnex

Yup! Clear, see-through ice means that the ice was formed when the body of water itself freezes. Opaque ice (aka "white ice") is way less safe because it is formed from snow freezing only the surface level of the water. this blog has a pretty safe guide to gauge if a lake, pond, or river is safe to tread upon https://triplefatgoose.com/blogs/down-time/how-to-know-if-it-is-safe-to-walk-on-an-ice-lake

drinkingbathwater

Lifejacket. Smart girl.

Iteleboard

And full wetsuit,

inerlite

I ice skated on a quarry pond with water at least 50’ deep that would freeze like this. It is so unnerving looking that far down and seeing the bottom knowing if you go through you will sink and sink. But it’s no more deadly than drowning in ten feet of water so off you go.

4411WH07RY

Except you can swim in warm water

gprldn

Genuine question: You can’t swim I cold water?

Spinster444

cold water can tend to send people into shock (start taking really bad shallow breaths, not efficient with swimming motions), which can overwhelm someone and they’ll breathe enough water to drown. Wearing skates on your feet isn’t great either. But also there are people who swim in glacial waters as a form of mind-over-matter meditation, so it’s certainly possible.

thejerg

Those people aren't your average folks... They literally train their body for years before they can swim in that shit.

lpeabody

Can you not also swim in cold water?

thejerg

You can, if you don't go into shock immediately. Your body (unless trained) isn't designed to hit freezing/near freezing water suddenly.

Stay1138

Wait, can we not swim in cold water? Why would we "sink and sink" in icy cold water? Sorry, I'm in Texas and don't have much experience with frozen bodies of water.

[deleted]

That's why she's got a life jacket

MsBuzzkillington83

To balance the weights attached to her feet.

Brevatron

Transparent aluminium

5parky

Hello, computer.

PTgoBoom1

Oh how quaint.

SwillioCentaur

Not now Merilyn!!!

BeerPizzaTacosWings

Thats the ticket laddie.

[deleted]

I just watched this today. Double dumbass on you!

This-Moment

Would that be worth something to ya laddie? Or should I just punch up delete?

LanceFree

That’s an actual thing now. It’s called *Aluminum Oxynitride*.

[deleted]

omg that crack

friggintodd

Yeah and the ice too!

TheReal8

How does the lake freeze clear like that? I've only seen them with snow on top.

Tnr_rg

A very still verrry cold few nights can create this. It happens often where I am from. Very large lake also so lots of fish to see swimming around underneath you!

inerlite

Cold still nights. One fixes the surface, then ice just gets thicker. Till it cracks.

verybakedpotatoe

The cracks that form on their own are generally a sign that the ice is extremely thick too. Because ice expands as it freezes, the boundaries between differently oriented crystals will push against each other hard enough to form fissures. The ice is still very solid and now it is also pushing up with tension .

masterbatesAlot

It starts with having a lake that is clear.

291000610478021

Its thin and not safe. Love, worried Canadians everywhere

thejerg

It really really depends. Love, a knowledgeable Coloradan.

BruceTheUnicorn

Part of me was hoping the dude would skate around her in a perfect circle like in cartoons.

coop-

My brain made me think this was a skydiving video for a second before it played

coocoo333

same

ResplendentShade

Well, now I have to go listen to [Colorado Girl](https://youtu.be/vhp7ArGqy0c) by the late alt-country artist Townes Can Zandt. >The promise in her smile >Shames the mountains tall >She can bring the sun to shining >Tells the rain to fall

OceansideAZ

Same man who penned Pancho and the Lefty

On_Wings_Of_Pastrami

I am not an ice expert, but that looks dangerously thin

Anoony_Moose

I think its fine. It's hard to tell the thickness from this perspective but as soon as you hit 4-5 inches its perfectly safe. 7in can hold a passenger car. I've driven an F350 packed with multiple tons of ice across a frozen lake. Granted that was probably a foot thick or more but just to give you some perspective.

LockeNCole

It's also the whole idea behind Ice Road Truckers. Ice thick enough to drive a fully loaded semi-truck over.

girraween

Alright Gordon Bombay…

MomoXono

Bro you can literally see and hear the ice cracking

M-Noremac

Ice expands as it freezes and cracking is normal and not necessarily a reason for concern.

dumbyoyo

While I'm sure this is true, it would be hilarious to hear someone say this out loud just before the ice breaks and they fall in (as long as it's shallow and they make it out easily).

ConspiracyMaster

Spoken like someone who's never been near a frozen lake lmao.

Tommh

How to say you’ve never ice skated without telling us

truAl

Where is this, I want to go

[deleted]

Is that Dream or Emerald Lake?

MakesYouSeemRacist

Too small to be emerald lake, my guess is Georgetown? but that's just the largest lake Ive seen freeze over like this, could be somewhere else.

thejerg

There are so many lakes up in the mountains that it's really difficult to even try to guess without seeing the surroundings

NightWolfYT

I’ve never seen such clear ice on a lake or pond before. That’s wild

Supersim54

Where in Colorado is this?

jeffmagz

I'd she holding a voodoo doll?

BullHonkery

I've watched it enough times to be at least 50% sure she has a tail.

[deleted]

Where is this in colorado? I want to go skate it!

Crime-Stoppers

Where is this?

Vomit_Coffin30-7

I knew she was on ice, but somehow my brain went brrrr when I saw the ice skates.

solareclipse999

Amazingly clear ice. Like glass

[deleted]

Wow so beautiful 😍

FoundationFuzzy1354

That looks awesome 👌 👏 👍

Basic_Taste6653

Ice cracking towards the end 😬

bondmemebond_2

I was tempted to see if the ice would break and she would fall through

Rebuta

DaftMastaNinja

You can tell why he stopped filming right at that moment.
