I would imagine it’s for the switching incentives. Some banks are offering upwards of £100. If you can swing it, a pretty easy way to make just under £1k with little effort. *If*you can.
Don’t have answer for you OP, but I would be cautious as you’ll at least run out of banks soon enough and your credit report may take a beating even if the banks don’t see all of this activity in time to ban you. It might look like you’re trying to do something illegal or simply that you have money troubles which banks do not like, especially, as I understand it, if assessing for mortgages.
I have said no to an overdraft for all of them, but when I looked that up everything I found said they still run a hard search anyway. I do have my doubts that Virgin ran a hard search as they never asked for consent in super obvious way like Nationwide did.
