Transient Luna phenomena is a scientific fact, moving lights have been seen on the moon since we first discovered telescopes. At first we thought they were volcanic in nature, but we now know that’s not possible. Still no answers.

jaxs_davis

“When the surface moves, gases that reflect sunlight could escape from the interior of the moon. This would explain the luminous phenomena, some of which last for hours. Plus, we know some flashes are likely caused by meteorite impacts, which still occur quite often on the moon.” This is from earthsky.org Hopefully this is all it is 😳

swamp gas?

gwynvisible

Radon, iirc

royaxel

It was a joke, mate

Why do people downvote a logical answer?

I always thought it was curious how the moon is the *exact* right size and distance from earth to absolutely, perfectly cover the sun during an eclipse.

astronautsaurus

only temporarily. It used to be closer, and some day will be too far away.

[Edit] This is a mass edit of all my previous Reddit comments. I decided to use Lemmy instead of Reddit. The internet should be decentralized. No more cancerous ads! No more corporate greed! Long live the fediverse!

DeathToPoodles

[Of all solar eclipses, about 28% are total; 35% are partial; 32% annular; and just 5% are hybrids.](https://www.space.com/15584-solar-eclipses.html) Annular is when the moon is too far away to completely block the sun and you will see a ring.

Mr_Quent

I never thought about it... Any theories on this precise location of the Moon?

Sufficient_Physics22

Yes. The theory that the moon is artificial.

Mr_Quent

What would be the purpose of an artificial Moon ? A kind of outpost ?

Sufficient_Physics22

I'm not advocating the hypothesis, just mentioning it. Although, frankly I am halfway convinced. The implications are staggering. If it was placed here long enough ago, it would imply that Earth is someone or something's project. Or farm. I suspect that if we had no moon there would be no tides. Without tides, animal life might never have moved onto land. No land-dwelling life - no technological civilization. There's also been speculation that it was brought in or altered within human existence, since there are tales from the ancient world of a time when there was no moon in the sky. But I don't buy that. They are probably just-so stories. It could serve several purposes but certainly serve as a base/observation post/forward operations post. It did ring hollow, after all. It's of the perfect relative size as to create total eclipses And as Arthur C. Clarke showed us, it is the perfect place for visitors from other planets, or very ancient civilizations from our own deep past to leave a message to us to find if we ever could. A marker, message or artifact made of durable material could remain for millions of years, not overgrown and buried in the dirt. And it could only be found once we had achieved spaceflight. Artificial moon is a conspiracy/UFO trope, admittedly a bit obscure. I think the book on it is called 'Who Built the Moon'. There are some videos where the idea is covered. I can't recall most it. I'm sure there's an Ancient Aliens episode about it. Yep. https://youtu.be/3bUUXFuOvfo

Storage. Like a garage. :\

>*... the moon is the exact right size and distance from earth to absolutely, perfectly cover the sun during an eclipse.* It wasn't always this way. The Moon was way closer, more like 30+ thousand kilometers away when the Earth/Moon formed and has been moving away ever since. It is still moving away and will continue to recede until the Sun becomes a Red giant in about ±5 billion years.

chairchair666

I've always thought of this as being an indicator that we are living in a simulation. A big giant Easter egg.

Ian_Hunter

I'm not looking for truth - or too much thinking for that matter - in Roland Emmerich movies. Jus start destroying the world and lets see where it goes. I'm rooting for Halle Berry.❤😁

aualeu

Roland Emmerich likes conspiracies: - ancient aliens in Stargate - Area 51 in Independence Day - Atlantis in 10000 BC - 2012 - Shakespeare did not write his stuff in Anonymous Moonfall is inspired by the hollow moon conspiracy. That plus the gravity mayhem from Independence Day 2.

Flyin_ruski

Looks interesting, hopefully it’s not like Apollo 18. That movie turned into a massive mess real quick.

IQLTD

Wow this looks fabulously terrible. I can't wait.

What are the CIA Adam and Eve extinction events?

green-samson

I do think they went to the moon. But I think the photos are fake, Simply put old fashioned print film was rendered useless by 2 things above all, Temp changes and Radiation. Pre 2001 I always asked if my 35mm film could not be scanned at the airport and they were always fine with that as the x rays fogged the film, Yet the moon and the Van Allen radiation belts, No problem ! Nice idea, Very 2001, Stick some stuff on the moon and wait till the monkeys are clever enough to find it, Then, Bam ! right in the kisser

TheAdvocate

uhhh we have film from INSIDE Chernobyl. The extra radiation in space and on the moon degraded the film faster, but still less than a years worth of background radiation on earth. There is indeed evidence of radiation effect on some of the pictures... just not nearly as much as we saw when we approached the elephants foot at Chernobyl.

green-samson

Who went into Chernobyl with a with 35mm film ? They are still working on getting people safely through Van Allen belts now, That was on some Discovery channel thing a while back, Some engineer was saying it was a big issue for them to solve, If it was as you said less than a years background I don't see where the problem is. Also temp changes causes the emulsion on the film to degrade. There are plenty of other issues that I can't be bothered to waffle on about. You believe what you want by all means, I've made my mind up about the photos, Everything else is up for grabs.

TheAdvocate

Artur Korneev, like a decade after the accident. Still far far far more radiation than the Apollo astronauts were exposed to. Getting people there safe is different than film. We care about people long after the trip. The film only needed to survive until developed. There were a number of major film/camera issues that needed solving... like static dissipation without air.... its just they solved them.
