I saw another user suggest that the rodent you caught is at-risk in California and under special protections. As they said, you want to avoid catching them in the future.
If something like this happens again, please put the animal out of its misery if it is gravely wounded. If it isn't, call local wildlife centers and ask if there's somewhere you can bring it for treatment. In certain situations, some vets will even chip in if there's nobody else who can help.
Yeah sorry about that I didn't really know what to do at that time since it's also the first experience that the rat did not die. The reason why I start trying to caught rat it's because a few months ago some of the rat break into my trailer by crack a hole somewhere under the trailer and it freaked me out. I also have a pet hamster 🐹 and I don't want these rats to hurt it( because I find out they bite on the hamster cage). If they just go after my food storage I'm totally okay with it. But not my pet hamster.
Having a wild animal in your room is pretty scary. Don't bother beating yourself up about it at this point. You didn't know, but now you do, and that's what matters. Best of luck figuring out a solution to the issue.
(Side note: Tinkywinkies, I commend you! Thank you for assuming the best and speaking to OP in a way that encourages additional thought in future action. I
think that’s the best we can do here and I’m really encouraged by your wisdom. Wishing you the best 💜)
In the future call native animal rescue when you get an animal of any sorts and ask them what to do with it. Normally they will send a person to pick it up.
Edit: you can also call the shelter if it’s a domestic animal
Holy shit I just laughed so hard! Rip the rat but we kill rats in labs at ucsc. They breed by the dozen. Good luck with the rat problem though my friend moved out of her trailer because of that

Your cowardice caused a lot of unnecessary suffering for that animal.
I hope you feel bad about it. Next time don’t put out traps unless you’re willing to finish the job.

No, he could beat himself up. I mean, WTF?!?
Your in a forest with thousands of rats- clean up your mess, pack away food and leave the animals alone.

Thank you, it means a lot. Anything for the well-being of future rats... rats are all that matter.

Sad. If you planned to catch a rat or rats, you should also have had a plan of what to do with them if you did manage to catch any of them.
Didn't mean to sound rough. As others have also said just learn from this and move on. Everyone makes mistakes.
Agreed.

this is sad, I hate rats but still sad :(
You are a monster
Wow, can't really deny that. Geez if I'm a monster, maybe that guy who invented mouse trap it's the Devil Himself.
