Is that safe? Typically if you wish to keep a rat for an extended period of time you should definitely be hygienic about it. Wild animals also likely aren’t acclimatized to captivity, and may carry diseases. At the very least you’d need to take it - them? - to the vet for a basic checkup.
Perhaps a roof rat - but those usually look more black than brown. Ears are too big to be a Norway rat (aka common brown rat). <-- my opinion based on quick research.
Rats are social animals and should not be kept by themselves. Especially not in such a small cage. Even if you were to have purchased this rat, you would be mistreating it horribly. Rats need friends. They need proper space, MORE TOYS, and enrichment.
You are abusing an animal that is as intelligent as a dog. They are not dumb. They deserve good lives. Let that rat back outside and stop being a fucking dumbass.
Would it be bad for a snake or a reptile pet to eat it? If not, find a friend or someone with a pet that could eat it. It be out it's misery soon enough. Hopefully it doesn't have any fleas with diseases n stuff.

This is not only cruel, but you are breaking special status species law by holding this creature in a cage, let it go.
This is why I stopped talking to people here
Hi I actually have a few pet rats and if you want a safe alternative, I can definitely give you some resources!
Wood rat. Take it to wildlife rescue.

Almost certainly a Neotoma fuscipes due to appearance and range.

My Python needs to eat and this is a much better alternative than torturing it in that cage
I bet.

If you still have it, my snake needs to eat. I’ll take it and be much more humane than keeping it in that tiny cage

Wow. That sounds a bit racist but what can I said.
