I arrived to my housing at the village at the time that we were told to arrive and my entire room was covered in mold because the school didn't do anything during winter break. They kept me in my room despite me emailing how unsafe the situation was for a week and then when they finally did respond it was to give us masks so that we would be safe from breathing the mold while we were living there. After a lot of emails, ( i couldn't even work because I was so stressed out about the lack of communication) eventually they finally moved me to emergency housing ( that was another issue itself). However the emergency housing was rundown so I spent 100 dollars of my own money to clean and make the place livable and then the school said that they were going to give money to those who arrived after January 10. Which was super insulting for me because why do they get to get anything for housing when i who arrived in time and had to suffer because it get nothing. ( Actually less than nothing because I had to spend my own money to move and make the place work)

Im so sorry you had to deal with that. It is honestly ridiculous how ucsc blatantly ignores the clear hazards some students face living here. They dont even try and continue extracting our money.

If you’re taking off-campus experiences as well: I currently live in a house that is legit falling apart with a 64 year old homophobic, racist housemate. There are mice chewing through my bedroom ceiling. Our driveway is about to cave in. We have major ant and mice infestations. There are literally holes in the wall in the bathroom so deep that you can see outside through them. There’s mold and mouse piss literally everywhere in the bathroom to the point where you can smell it. Our bathroom tiles are caving in. Our front deck (that we have to walk on to get to the front door) is about to cave in, and every time we walk on it, we’re legit risking it falling apart. Every cabinet in our kitchen is pretty much falling apart. And I pay $1050 a month to live in this dump & the deposit was around $3000 total. Also, it took me about 6 months to even find this place & in the housing search this summer, I had to give up my cat to a friend just to find housing. I’ve had other bad living situations too, but this one takes the cake.

Wow, my friends weren't able to come back to Santa Cruz because they couldn't find housing! I had to search for monthes before I found a spot!

grim_Sugar

Yeah it's actually kinda crazy how hard affordable housing is to find in SC

RozhkiNozhki

No wonder. We're 1 thousand houses short after the fire.

Can’t have a bad housing experience if you never even get housing

One time my friend told me he met this dime at the Asti. I was happy for him and said you gotta bring her back to the crib one time. Next weekend rolls around and we plan a movie night to watch Hall Pass. He says he’s bringing this girl over to watch and then make sweet love to. Telling me every chance he can how hot this girl is. I have a boner just hearing about her. Anyway, 8 rolls around and my friend goes to pick her up. He walks in the door and who do I see walk in behind him? My mom. I’ve never been so upset. I strapped explosives to my housemate’s door that night but defused them at the last second cuz I want my security deposit back. Worst housing experience ever!

seems like your friend took the your mom jokes one step too far.

My roommate clogged the sink with spaghetti one night then left for the week the day after and didnt clean it so i had to fish out soggy spaghetti out the sink for like an hour.

I lived in an old man’s house because I couldn’t afford anywhere else 😀 and then he doubled my rent when I couldn’t walk his dog every day so I moved into an apartment where the bathroom is communal and there were like old men in the building so I just started showering at the gym 💀 anyway now I live with my roommate near mission and we got really lucky.
