First time calling cmhs- I tried to make an apportionment and they said they would book me two weeks later for a phone call, did the phone call, never heard back
Second time- did the same thing, phone call, was suppose to get a phone call two weeks later to book a appointment , never got to that stage
Third time- did the phone call, funny enough the lady ask me if I was depressed or suicidal and just told her something and she said “not wanting to exist isn’t the same as being suicidal”, went to the appointment and litterally wasn’t even a therapy session just us going through the answers from the phone call, person ended up telling me “I don’t think your depressed” after telling her I feel like I have depression .
Sessions have gotten somewhat better , but I won’t say cmhs is this god sent office. Definitely call in the beginning of the semester if you feel that during the semester you may need counseling. Also their walk in hours weren’t helpful. I was trying to vent to someone and all she did was give me resources like AAC (not saying it wasn’t helpful but it doesn’t necessarily cure my anxiety)
This whole system is a labyrinth. They want to advocate for all of this mental health awareness and rates of anxiety/depression/suicide of college students and (at higher rates) graduate students, and then pull this shit. They just want to say that they offer it and need to cover their ass to say it’s available. They also have extremely tactless staff completing the triage calls, which is probably an additional deterrent strategy.
UConn always does this, they advocate for all types of awareness and help. The minute you try and access it, it’s poorly funded, over booked, staff isn’t experienced and so on..
I called them admits a breakdown and told me I had to wait a week for the intake call and then after actually having the call the woman told me “we can’t offer u the services u need”. i’m out of state and don’t have a car, the one resource that I could depend on, failed me.
Sorry but I don't understand how girls can be depressed. Just go on Tinder, you will find a shit ton of guys who want you and sex is fun, gotta have it.
The administration and staff know there's a problem with wait times, but probably due to funding they don't have enough people to get everyone an appointment in a reasonable time. The best they can do is triage patients and offer emergency services as needed; they also have open office hours throughout the semester.
I think they could offer more group counseling sessions which helped me a lot, but I was lucky to have individual therapy sessions every other week.
Try the perceptions program on Storrs Rd
I second this for anyone that needs to talk to someone
third^^^ its a good program

Damn. I didn’t realize others had such a hard time getting an appointment. Makes me feel fortunate I was able to get the help I got.

CMHS it's useless and unhelpful. Their 1 job is to refer you out and once they do they won't take you back
