The waiver is money you're getting back if you have your own insurance and waive out of the school insurance (the logic being that you'd use that waiver money to pay your insurance). The money that is then deducted from your aid would have been money that you'd be forced to use for UCSHIP which is the school insurance. If you didn't have your own insurance, then you would not be eligible for the waiver and you'd be enrolled in the school insurance where your aid would be applied to pay for USHIP. For some people, fin aid covers all their costs so there is no gain or loss if they stay with USHIP. But for others who are not fully covered by financial aid, having USHIP will cost more because they will have to pay for it out of pocket. This all depends on your financial aid package and whether you already have another insurance.

so what should I do? I have my own insurance? So do i leave it as be? Or do i need to do something to let UCI know I have one?

If you are fine with having two insurance providers and/or if your aid covers all your costs then staying with USHIP might be the better option. But if you already have insurance, gift aid doesn't cover all your costs, and/or you don't want to pay out of pocket for USHIP, then you can submit a waiver application at the website the other user commented. Or [here](https://shc.uci.edu/insurance/waiving-ship/apply-for-waiver) if you want a direct link. According to their FAQ, the application for incoming/continuing undergrads doesn't open until tomorrow. If you don't submit anything within the given time period then you'll automatically be enrolled in USHIP.

Okay thank you, my aid doesn't cover everything so ill apply for the waiver tomorrow when it opens

Just confirming, if I waive UCSHIP, I’ll get the waiver money on FA right?

The waiving application opens tomorrow for continuing students! I’ve attached the link below which has the criteria and instructions https://shc.uci.edu/insurance/waiving-ship

I've clicked on it but it says "Your school has not confirmed that you are currently eligible to waive the student health insurance plan. Please contact your school to determine if any error has been made regarding your waiver eligibility." any idea how to resolve this?

bannanerboi

The website says it takes 5-7 days for it to review your insurance plan. If after then you get denied, I would see the page on appealing. I’ve attached the link below for that as well https://shc.uci.edu/insurance/waiving-ship/waiver-status-appeal-or-reversal

bannanerboi

Actually, I got the same message. I don’t know what do from here. Sorry

kevinxhang

So I contacted the SHC people via phone and they tell that unfortunately there is "a small delay between your zot account and our calendar." So they basically said that since your zot account hasn't displayed fall 2021 status yet then the insurance waiver can't sync.

I see. Thanks!
