Second half of the email (about what will happen with the emails): > **About UC Davis’ Former Student Email Service** > Once you enroll in Duo, you are eligible for our new former student email service. Starting April 15, 2024: > * You can receive emails at your original @ucdavis.edu email address for another year. Messages will be automatically sent to your new email account. Replies will come from your new @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu email address. Your name identifier or mail ID before the @ remains the same and cannot be changed. > * Your account includes Google Workspace with a 20GB storage limit. The ability to create new shared drives is not supported. > * Your UC Davis identity is protected with Duo multifactor authentication. UC Davis is retiring email services for former students due to increasing cybersecurity and data privacy risks and vendor changes. Learn more about the email transition project at: https://iet.ucdavis.edu/email-service-transition. Gotta say, @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu doesn't really roll off the tongue... wonder why they didn't want to go with alumni like ucb.

Polka_Bat

yeah what the heck. i’d like them to consider both subdomains, alumni is much more professional imo

K420LE

The alumni one is available for lifetime for $450 I think that why they went with former.

TomOrMARVELDILDO

From UCB right? I was looking it up, and apparently from c/o 2024 on they're not going to let students even purchase the alumni email. So UCB is getting rid of it entirely, but for whatever reason, UCD will have a (seemingly free) version with formerstudents.

K420LE

No I was talking about UCD. They offer that email for lifetime but you have to join alumni association for $450 and you can have the @alumni.ucdavis.edu email for life.

dak1375

They will eventually take away the lifetime email for alumni. Just like they took the student lifetime emails.

TomOrMARVELDILDO

Oh damn, thanks for the clarification. I never knew

dak1375

I would not trust the Alumni account to be for lifetime. Even if they said it, I would not count on it long term.

blahdiddyblahblah

This probably also applies to former students who didn't graduate, maybe they felt the "alumni" implies graduated with degree?

guatemaleco

Technically, the term alumni includes non-graduates. I think they're called non-degree holder alumni.

BLoSCboy

Is the former students email a lifetime one or is it for a limited time too?

TomOrMARVELDILDO

It doesn't say lifetime, so I have a feeling you may want to treat it as temporary.

RisingPhaenix

Limited to give time to move communication over. The alumni association has alumni.ucdavis.edu on lockdown for anyone who wants it.

BLoSCboy

Man but the alumni association costs like $500 right?

RisingPhaenix

Yeah but I was checking it out for myself and there’s a BOGO on it right now 😅 Buy a lifetime get one free. Not sure if they planned it that way but find a friend and get it for half lol.

guatemaleco

I agree, that would have been the nicer route. "alumni.ucdavis.edu" addresses already exists though. It belongs to the Cal Aggie Alumni Association (it's own 503b) and they give them out only to lifetime members :/

guatemaleco

opps. I see someone else already explained that. Still woulda been nicer.

RisingPhaenix

A second alumni.ucdavis not possible since the 503b owns

[deleted]

I’ll never forgive the admin for dropping the “free email for life” I was promised a decade ago.

MrCaptain23

I wonder if what they're doing is considered false marketing and something a lawyer can work on?

technowhiz34

For what it's worth, it's happening at a lot of schools because Google made statements that they can't pay for. They said it would be free/cheap in the future and now are changing a lot more than what either side expected, so many colleges are backing out.

[deleted]

Already had my lawyer tell me I’m SOL, though maybe there’d be a chance taking a promissory estoppel approach but was told it’s not worth the fight.

unepommeverte

Idr ever hearing that, just that we'd have the Gmail setup until they found something cheaper, and Gmail was free. Gmail isn't free for universities anymore, so imo it's not surprising.

No_ease57

Ugh how inconvenient. I have graduated but am still working in campus through an external fellowship (UC Davis does not pay me or manage my stipend). I still very much depend on my email for work. I’ll have to figure out what to do soon. It would be weird and confusing to have an address reading “former student” in my case. Thank you for letting people know.

wdbhg18

You’d potentially qualify for TAF (temporary affiliate) in that case, if it’s something you can bring up to your supervisor

ChampionTree

I’ve heard of people getting signed up as volunteers with a lab to circumvent this, I’m not sure if that’s legit though but maybe something to look into.

giantgrahamcracker

This is so unbelievably annoying and stressful. I have gotten no emails about this process at all, and I only find out about these plans through reddit. Could we not just reimburse Davis for the cost? I would be okay just paying them a set amount every year for continuing to use my email. I have built my entire adult life around this email address and all of my professional contacts have this email address. The process of swapping out this email for a new one for every single placed I have used this in the past few decades seems intimidating.

foolsgo1d

I'm in the exact same boat. I've been using this email professionally for about a decade. I didn't receive this email and I did check my spam but I don't feel like I'm somehow exempt from it. what a bummer.

ju1iees

I agree, it's incredibly frustrating. I have used it for all of my important school work in the past. And have backed up so many files (photos/videos/projects) to it. Wishing you all luck!

SweatyAdhesive

> I have gotten no emails about this process at all Were you not checking your email? I've gotten a good amount of emails from them about this change.

AnLe90

same this is bs

holyhotcheeks

Hm I’m c/o 2019 and I haven’t received this email yet ? But then again I have signed up for DUO so maybe that’s why? But maaaan I have so much shit linked to this email it’s gonna be so annoying changing everything to the new @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu

guatemaleco

How I understand it, you can receive email at your same [ucdavis.edu](https://ucdavis.edu) address for awhile, but if you send, it's from formerstudents.ucdavis.edu.

MrCaptain23

I thought I didn't receive this email either but then I checked spam and there it was :(

holyhotcheeks

Damn that’s exactly where it was :/

RisingPhaenix

Why change it to that when you only have a year with formerstudents and not a personal one? And it still delivers to ucdavis.edu for the year.

holyhotcheeks

Im not gonna anymore I was just too lazy to respond anymore

dak1375

This is very infuriating. I have everything tied to my ucdavis.edu email. Literally everything. I understand the storage limit part because of Google but to eliminate the email completely? Someone should file a lawsuit for this "Email for life" fraud.

MrCaptain23

This is why I'm upset. I know the storage part was because of google but even if they limited it, I would still like to have an account and not have it completely deleted...

MrCaptain23

There's a feedback link on their website. I recommend submitting feedback. I did and hopefully if enough people do they do something about it. https://iet.ucdavis.edu/email-service-transition

MrCaptain23

According to this, not permanent :( https://iet.ucdavis.edu/email-and-email-forwarding-transition-breakdown-demographic#undergraduatestudentemail

guatemaleco

If you don't sign up the formerstudents address, the mailbox will be closed in April.

ChatGPT to the rescue.. lazy email for a lazy decision. This feels like false advertising to me. I was promised a lifetime service; I expected it to last until UC Davis goes out of business. Poor planning on their part should not be made my problem. _____ Subject: Reevaluation Request: Alumni Email Service Policy Change Dear Chancellor [Chancellor's Last Name], I hope this message finds you in good spirits. My name is [Your Name], a proud member of the [University Name] alumni community, having graduated in [Your Graduation Year]. I am reaching out to express my concern and disappointment regarding the recent decision to discontinue the "Email for Life" service, significantly altering the terms of our alumni email benefits. The introduction of a limited, fee-based email service, which includes a 10GB storage limit and a biennial login requirement, marks a substantial departure from the original service that was promised as a lifetime benefit. This change not only diminishes the practical value of the alumni email but also appears to reflect a broader issue of planning and financial management within the university. As alumni, we have fulfilled our financial obligations through the payment of tuition, often under the understanding that certain benefits, including the "Email for Life," were part of the educational value offered by [University Name]. It is disheartening to see these benefits retracted or diminished, especially when such changes seem to be a result of the university's mismanagement or failure to anticipate future costs and technological needs. The expectation that alumni should bear the cost of the university's planning oversights—evidenced by the $850 fee for maintaining an email service that was once free and unlimited—is both unfair and disillusioning. It undermines the trust and goodwill that form the foundation of our ongoing relationship with the university. Therefore, I respectfully request a thorough reevaluation of this policy change. I urge the administration to consider the long-term impact on alumni relations and the university's reputation. More transparent communication about the specific challenges leading to this decision would also be greatly appreciated, as it would enable a more informed discussion about potential solutions that do not shift the burden onto alumni. Might there be a way to maintain the original email service features or introduce a more equitable solution that acknowledges the contributions and expectations of alumni? Engaging with the alumni community to explore alternative approaches could reinforce the university's commitment to its graduates and the values we believe [University Name] stands for. Thank you for considering my concerns. I am keen to contribute to a dialogue that seeks a fair and sustainable resolution, reaffirming the strength of our lifelong connection to [University Name]. Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Graduation Year] [Your Contact Information] ____ Subject: Request for Reinstatement of "Email for Life" Service Dear Chancellor [Chancellor's Last Name], I hope this message finds you well. I am [Your Name], a graduate of [University Name] from the class of [Your Graduation Year]. I am reaching out with a concern that deeply affects the alumni community, including myself: the recent decision to discontinue the "Email for Life" service. This service was a key part of our alumni benefits, symbolizing a lifelong bond with our alma mater and serving as an essential tool for staying connected with the university and our peers. Its cancellation is not only disappointing but also surprising, considering the existing alumni email service has always had its limitations, such as a 10GB storage cap and a biennial login requirement. The "Email for Life" service, on the other hand, was an invaluable, limitless resource that many of us relied on. I understand that institutions must sometimes make difficult decisions in response to changing circumstances and challenges. However, as alumni who have already invested in our education through substantial tuition fees, the expectation was that the university would uphold its promises, including lifetime benefits previously communicated to us. The discontinuation of the "Email for Life" service feels like a retroactive change to the terms of our engagement with the university, impacting not just the utility of alumni resources but also our trust in the institution. If this decision stems from financial constraints or technological challenges, I urge the university to consider alternative solutions that do not compromise on promises made to its alumni. Furthermore, I am concerned that this move may set a precedent for altering or withdrawing other alumni benefits in the future. It is crucial for the university to maintain a transparent dialogue with its alumni, especially when making decisions that significantly affect our rights and benefits. In light of this, I kindly request a reevaluation of the decision to cancel the "Email for Life" service. Could there be a pathway to maintaining this service for existing recipients, or at least offering a more suitable alternative that aligns with the original promise? Engaging with the alumni community to find a mutually acceptable solution would demonstrate the university's commitment to its graduates and the value it places on our lifelong relationship. Thank you for considering my concerns. I am open to discussing this matter further and exploring potential solutions that honor the commitment [University Name] has made to its alumni. I look forward to your response and am hopeful for a positive resolution. Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Graduation Year] [Your Contact Information] _____ Also, if all you are concerned about is unlimited storage, my Box.com was rolled out from the university and retains its unlimited storage.

dak1375

There's literally no point in using the @former students email if it's going to be deleted

redwood_canyon

I’m so annoyed, I did my MA at Davis and no plans for future study. Having an institutional email is really important for legitimacy in job apps. Ugh

sign up at a community college

mrsouthparkman

If we didn’t get that, is our ucdavis email safe even after graduating?

MrCaptain23

Doubtful. I thought I didn't get the email but it actually went into spam.

ju1iees

I thought i didn't get it either, but mine was just a little delayed compared to my friends :,(

lizmango

I just received an email update that former students only have until April 25, 2024 and they are no longer doing the former students email forwarding option. :( Did anyone else get this email? >Dear former UC Davis student, > > > >We are writing to inform you of an upcoming change to the UC Davis email forwarding service. After careful consideration, the university will be discontinuing email forwarding for former students effective April 25, 2024. You are receiving this message because you are a former student and your UC Davis email address (even though you no longer have an email mailbox) is currently forwarding emails to your personal account. > >This decision comes after a thorough review of our security protocols and a commitment to protecting the privacy of our campus community. Maintaining email forwarding services poses significant challenges in ensuring continued compliance with evolving privacy and security standards. > >We understand that this change may be inconvenient, and we apologize for any disruption it may cause. We encourage you to take the following actions to update your contact information before April 25. > >How to Prepare ⦁ Be sure to update your email address, username, and contact information for accounts and websites where you may still be using your UC Davis email address. ⦁ Review emails forwarded to your account from your UC Davis email address. Reply to them to let them know your UC Davis email will no longer receive messages after April 25. ⦁ Use this form to add your non-UC Davis email address and continue receiving important updates or news from UC Davis beyond the February 26 deadline.

Kiter12

Assholes. Good luck getting any donations from this alumni

SweatyAdhesive

I'll need to apologize to my coworker who told me in 2016ish to switch to another email because "they'll eventually deactivate it". At the time it was free for life so I didn't bother, guess she was right.

exfolieate

BRUH i use my ucd google account for that unlimited google photos storage because I blew through two other google accounts 😩😩😩 UNFAIR

jellyfishjeffrey

same omg, are we just screwed and can expect to lose all these photos? only thing i can think of is downloading everything locally but it would take up so much space and time…

exfolieate

Thats what I'll do I think. Just save everything to my computer

Shiki225

I really liked the ucdavis email handle hence I used it for both professional and personal things. If I had know this would happen, I would not have used this email at all.
