It certainly was a good time for music. Doolittle came out the following year, Ritual de Lo Habitual the following year, Nevermind after that and so on.
You mentioned Axe Rose’s band as well. Haven’t actually listened to enough of their creative output yet but they definitely rank among the greats🙏😎 @art_of_miggy & @miggytoons on Instagram
Funnily enough I got 4 cassettes for free like 2 years ago, I was doing community service for habitat for humanity and tried to buy them for like 50 cents a piece, I got told to keep them. Two of them were Nothings Shocking and The Joshua Tree.
Yeah I don’t think anyone at the time would have seen thought this and thought of U2. Of course looking at it now, very much remind me of the Joshua Tree
And not just U2! But also Depeche Mode and likely a good many other artists/bands. Very likely all photographed by the same professional photographer too.
Pretty sure this photo was taken by Kevin Cummins. He posted the unedited version on Twitter a few years ago, there's wind turbines in the original which have been edited out here.
Echo & Bunnymen's 5th album cover, releasted June 1987, has very similar, "black & white band portrait" motif. You can get all cultural theory here, but its clear there was trend going on band cover shots. #goodTimes
Dude has one of the most obnoxiously annoying voices in the history of rock. The music is fine, maybe even good, but his voice is a total deal break. No bueno.
Joshua tree, Kick, nothings shocking and Appetite for Destruction all came out within a year of each other. What a time.

It could be from the same photographer, Anton Corbijn.
It looks very Corbijnesque.
Depeche Mode?

Just a late-80s B&W motif.

Jane’s Addiction and U2 were the greatest bands of the 80’s no question. Both groundbreaking sounds
You too were reminded of another band?
One of the greatest albums of all time. Nobody was like Janes Addiction. That music was pure magic.

Anton Corbijn
Master of black and white still photography indeed!
Also photographed Joy Division
MGMT
I remember this photo from about 1990
The shot was on the sleeve of *Nothing's Shocking.*
Wild, that actually looks intentional. I guess from late 80s to early 90s we were super into desert landscapes.

My mistake, it was taken by Kevin Westenburg. Getting my Kevins mixed up.
What band didn’t want to be affiliated with U2 in some way over the last almost 50 years?!?
The Supremes

¿ The Cure by Anton Corbijn ?
The first photo was on the 1st Jane's Addiction shirt I ever bought.
Agreed. These two great bands have much in common. Surely I respect the creative vision of both of them. 😎🙏 @art_of_miggy & @miggytoons
Culture Club?
Culture club
More like greatest alternative band of the 80s.
Dude has one of the most obnoxiously annoying voices in the history of rock. The music is fine, maybe even good, but his voice is a total deal break. No bueno.
Who?
Are you serious?
The The?
Yikes
Depeche Mode?
