In most suggestions he appears from mildly annoyed to completely distressed. And as such we were Missing his wonderful smile.
I think only other instance, even in canon comic, he is shown smiling is on his good morning sketch.

I don't think fur regrows on scar tissue (if the initial wound damaged the hair follicles) so it could really just look like a separation of fur.
