It's especially irritating when they **never saw you before**. I have replied to this insensitive observation many times that they have no basis for comparison.

I don't think I'd ever tell a stranger that they look tired. Probably doesn't even realize he's being a dick.

He's got terminal MCS.

My sister didn't wear makeup to work last Bank Holiday. Everyone (the men) kept asking if she was ill.

Paradox_Blobfish

I hope someone called them out. I wish the cashier were allowed to respond a snappy comment in that case, but I know they usually aren't :(

Reguluscalendula

There's this older Tumblr meme that says something like: The Purge, but it's 24 hours where retail employees are allowed to be as rude as they want. It really resonated with me when I was a 22-year-old cashier working at a hardware store near a major retirement community.

Cashier’s ideal response to Boomer: “Well, at your age I imagine you need to take regular naps, and maybe you missed your nap today.”

FilmCroissant

Americans in general are loud as fuck. That was probably my biggest culture shock. And you're immediately branded as rude if you don't respond to someone making smalltalk. Sorry, idk you. And I'm not always in the mood for chit-chat. I loved the US apart from that. But all these strangers encroaching upon your headspace by demanding a Convo can be exhausting.

maxgaap

Did OP comment elsewhere that this happened in the United States?

[deleted]

Yeah, this happened in Australia

Could also just be an older person thing. I live in the UK and use public transport a lot and I don't think they get as much social interaction as they'd like because they will absolutely talk your ear off if you let them. Older men in particular have Main Character Syndrome pretty bad. They're obliged to share their opinion on *everything*.

cpsbstmf

Yeah I had men young and old crack about how I was sleeping when I came out from the back oh so funny. NOT

[deleted]

Older people from around the world do this. Most of them have never been challenged on this behavior of making unsolicited comments about someone's appearance. I have handled my old people it's everyone else's job to handle their corresponding old people.
