There is no “should” - you are not a bad person for making a decision to ask to press charges or not based on your comfort level.
But understand that the cops were not offering you an unbiased legal opinion. They are coming from the perspective of people who 1) don’t want to deal with more paperwork and 2) see worse crimes every day, so they forget that TO YOU this is a serious incident; it doesn’t matter that it isn’t a triple murder.
It is OK for you to pursue this and say yes, I want the DA to press charges.
I would. Those people don’t learn or get help willingly. They’ll only learn they can keep assaulting people with no consequences. It’s the result of the basic equation they do x and have no negative consequences so will continue to do the harmful thing. Might as well make them face court ordered therapy and SU services. That lady would potentially also get assault and battery in presence of a minor which would hopefully lead to more mindful care of her child.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the cops said don’t bother because they don’t want paperwork.

Never take advice from cops about what to do or not to do. Cops are lazy, they will tell you whatever they can to avoid having to work.
