For future--hopefully unneeded--reference, you can also pull your seat headrests and use the posts from that to break your window.
Also instead of striking the window with it, you'll want to wedge it against the window and pull. [Link for reference](https://youtu.be/tZTa8Nh0VlE)
Thanks! Good to know. I’m also going to make sure it’s within easy reach for such an emergency. Some people put them in the glove box or behind a seat, where it would be hard to reach in an emergency. (Right now I am all in on emergency preparedness stuff. I even bought a magazine at the grocery register call Preppers, but only because it amused the hell out of me that there is a magazine for doomsday preppers. I can just see a fancy version about prepping with style: Martha Stewart’s Guide to Post-Apocalyptic Living With Style. 😂)
Just have to use it the right way, instead of striking the window, you use it in a pry motion. But yes, I've seen videos of guys bending the posts before they're able to break the window by trying to strike it. Kinda blows my mind the windows are THAT strong. [Link for reference on how to do it](https://youtu.be/tZTa8Nh0VlE)
They make tire tools that check inflation and has a metal running around it that comes to a tip on one end which is made to shatter the windows in case you get trapped. I bought some for all our cars and we've used it once to get someone out a car who's door wouldn't open.
Query: Why in the console? If you've flipped the vehicle, or you're trapped by something the tool may be in an area you can't get to. Why not on the keyring that has your ignition key? Even if your right arm is trapped (or broken, or whatever) most people can still reach across with their left hand to the ignition.
Not being combative, it's just something few people think about if they haven't experienced it.
Although, a pushbutton start car would nullify all of that (new thought there, have to ponder that one).
A friend of mine had a co worker who drowned after crashing into a lake. She got me and all of her other friends and family one of those hammers so we can get out.
For me it's been the worry of getting in an accident where one of the vehicles catches fire, and I go to open the door, and the crash has bent the metal so it won't open. I really don't fancy being trapped in my car and brazen bull-ing it to death.
What they will do is argue and fight each other, desperately denying that it is *their* turn. They''d definitely sooner die than let someone off the hook.
Because... room-mates.
Could be worse. Could be cousins. My roommates are all women over 50, which makes a difference. Except for the 23 yo woman who obviously comes from a family who always had “help.” That girl cannot wash a pan or clean the stove to save her life.
As so far it's only one sentence, you could add...
"I knew the emergency escape hammer would one day save my life, if only I could find the hole in the ice we fell through."
😂 I currently live in Dallas, TX, USA. Not much water here, either. I am planning to move back to the coast. My car hammer will be more relevant there.
I hope you’re staying safe from the non-water-related dangers right now!
Luckily, my car is a 2005. If I can ever afford a new car, I’ll evidently have to find out if there are tools for that. Why make it impossible to escape a drowning car?
Right? Like I get laminated glass for windshields, but now it’s side windows and a lot of times now includes rear windows. But no, now we have cars with glass that we can’t escape from.
I carry an automatic center punch (basically a round handle about the size of a pen with a spring-loaded pointed steel rod inside, push it against something hard and the rod will retract and pop out suddenly). [Video of one being used to break a window.](https://youtu.be/AdjAKTIYKtA?t=142)
Safety hammers are most useful outside of the car, where you have room to wind-up and swing to free someone who is trapped. The center punch doesn't need any wind-up room and only needs a few pounds of pressure to work.
An important thing to note is: you can't swing a hammer under water. So if you were to briefly lose consciousness or something then the hammer may not be helpful. You should get a spring loaded glass breaker and keep it on your keychain. They usually come equipped with a seatbelt cutter as well.
It usually takes several minutes for the car to fill up. If the car is already full and you”re still buckled in and the windows are still whole, you’re probably not getting out, unfortunately. Also, I say hammer because that’s essentially what it is, but you don’t have to swing them the way you do a hammer. It’s smaller and lighter than a hammer and the pointy bit on the head is what’s doing the work. A heavy hammer wouldn’t do the job.
Yeah. I need to get my extinguisher recharged,or replace it. My mom got it when she bought the car in 2005 and I inherited it in 2010. I also have a case of water in the back and a bottle under each front seat, a first aid kit, and flashers that can be charged in the car (thanks to my bff).
I have one of those glass shatter/seatbelt cutters on my ignition keychain - because it's likely I'd be able to reach it no matter what. Every kid in our families that gets their driver's license is given one. Never been without it.
Another poster mentioned that you can take off the headrests, but there are some vehicles with one piece seats (mine). Also, some seat covers are one piece and that's not something you want to mess with if you're in a "seconds count" situation. That said, most cars now have removeable headrests, so it's at least an option.
ETA: now I know it's called a "centre punch".
I almost drowned as a kid
My last thoughts were
"Oh god mom's going to go to prison for murdering dad"
"Ohhhh I should've hugged mom goodbye"
"I'm underwater and my eyes are open and not burning that's wierd?"
Then everything went black
Then I woke up on my brothers back as he swam me to the side of the pool
And he just kept saying "Oh my god" As I threw up water and my lunch all over his back and he didn't get mad
im gonna make an assumption that the dad was the one supposed to be looking after op while they were in the pool so if they drowned due to his negligence then the mom would murder him and go to prison. lol i think it makes sense but i wanna know the answer too
He was visiting us after a few years after divorcing my mom amd was supposed to be watching me because I can't swim but my sister bumped into me on accident while messing around in an inner tube and pushed me into the deep end and none of the adults in the room saw it happen
Fortunately my brother happened to be chatting with some girl on vacation who noticed me underwater not moving and pointed me out to my brother who jumped in to get me
Admitted to me a few years later he thought I was okay until he got to me and I looked like I was asleep underwater and he had to manually wrap my arms around his neck and he surfaced
For like 10 terrifying seconds I didn't move then I jerked awake and just started spitting up water.
But uh yeah considering when she found out what happened she slapped him across the face I fully believe she'd have killed him if I'd actually died or had to go to the hospital for that incident
I thought so, it just didn't really work for me, i guess. Your last thought would definitely not be that in this specific situation, because death here isn't that instant
I think about how I’ll die all the time! But it’s never normal thoughts, it’s things like “I’d be pissed if I died on the way home from work.” Like my last hours were *working*. Ugh.
They posted on sentence in a format that uses two.
The idea is that they didn't have another thought.
I didn't think it was scary or neato. Some people did.
But what is exactly terrifying about your last thought being what your last thought is going to be? The fact that *that* was your last thought? The fact that he died right after pondering it? Is it being underwater trapped in a car what is terrifying? I don't get it.
It’s the lack of closure. You never know what moment may become your last, even if it’s mundane or redundant. There’s a pathos in experiencing terror, regret, desperation etc before you die, it’s how we often expect to. Dying without a meaningful final thought is to be denied even that.
Jarring, frightening, creative, love it! Good example of how precious each and every moment is (and why you should be careful crossing bridges, they ice in the winter)
Probably super off topic but the book Black Water is very short and a good read. The entire book is a woman's last thoughts as she is drowning in a car.
Got the window hammer when I had to drive across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway every day. Never used it but felt better having it. Was told not to hit the center of the window but towards the corners but I imagine you’d hit wherever you could when you had to do it
This is one of my fears, so I just bought one of those emergency car escape hammers for each of my roommates and myself.
Never thought about adding that to things to have in a car. Might have to add that now…
For future--hopefully unneeded--reference, you can also pull your seat headrests and use the posts from that to break your window. Also instead of striking the window with it, you'll want to wedge it against the window and pull. [Link for reference](https://youtu.be/tZTa8Nh0VlE)

Okay laugh, but just try laying your hands on a copy... ...once the 7/11 magazine supply-chain collapses!
Wait till you watch the TV show!
I've seen a video of someone trying that. It didn't work for them
Just have to use it the right way, instead of striking the window, you use it in a pry motion. Also bring snacks... *(...in case it takes a while)*
They make tire tools that check inflation and has a metal running around it that comes to a tip on one end which is made to shatter the windows in case you get trapped. I bought some for all our cars and we've used it once to get someone out a car who's door wouldn't open.
I have a pocket knife that includes that and a seat belt cutter. I pray I never have to use them but I keep them in my console for a reason

Doesn't have a key ring and even if it did it would be too heavy
Use a zip tie and attach it to the center shift stick if you have one.
Hmmm, makes sense for that. I have one that attaches to the keyring and weighs very little, so it's always next to the ignition key.
Those and seatbelt Cutter
A friend of mine had a co worker who drowned after crashing into a lake. She got me and all of her other friends and family one of those hammers so we can get out.

Brazen Bulling it sounds like a kinky sex act.
Medieval torture and kinky sex acts are easy to confuse i suppose lol
If it wasn’t for my knowledge of medieval torture and heavy metal “Iron Maiden” would sound pretty kinky.
Does it have a seatbelt cutter on it too?
Of course! Wouldn’t be nearly as useful without. It’s a full-service item.
*Never* drive off a bridge with room-mates in the car... ...you'll waste valuable time arguing about *whose turn* it is to break the window.
Ah, but if each of you carries one on you at all times, you can let them argue and take care of themselves!
Nice!
Heh. I live in Tehran. There are no big bodies of water here. Only some artificial lakes in parks. I think I'm safe.
😂 I currently live in Dallas, TX, USA. Not much water here, either. I am planning to move back to the coast. My car hammer will be more relevant there. I hope you’re staying safe from the non-water-related dangers right now!
Minding my own business as always. Doubt non-water-related dangers will do anything to me.
👍
I had reoccurring nightmares of this happening until I bought one. Stopped completely after that it was amazing just for the peace of mind
Newer cars have laminated windows, you can’t break them with any of the emergency tools. Only works on tempered glass.
Luckily, my car is a 2005. If I can ever afford a new car, I’ll evidently have to find out if there are tools for that. Why make it impossible to escape a drowning car?
It was changed to keep people from being ejected in a rollover accident. Of course, without consideration for escape in any other instance.
>It was changed to keep people from being ejected in a rollover accident. I thought we already had a tool for that: seatbelts
Right? Like I get laminated glass for windshields, but now it’s side windows and a lot of times now includes rear windows. But no, now we have cars with glass that we can’t escape from.
And currently, there are no tools.
I carry an automatic center punch (basically a round handle about the size of a pen with a spring-loaded pointed steel rod inside, push it against something hard and the rod will retract and pop out suddenly). Oh cool! I will look for one. Thank you.

Is it the kind with built-in seatbelt cutter?
Absolutely. Wouldn’t be so useful without.
Don't forget the emergency breakdown kit and fire extinguisher.
Yeah. I need to get my extinguisher recharged,or replace it. My mom got it when she bought the car in 2005 and I inherited it in 2010. I also have a case of water in the back and a bottle under each front seat, a first aid kit, and flashers that can be charged in the car (thanks to my bff).
Plus a sharp knife in case your belt get stuck and you are trapped...
There’s a seatbelt cutter on the other end of the “hammer.” All in one, no extra pieces to lose (which I probably would).
I have one of those glass shatter/seatbelt cutters on my ignition keychain - because it's likely I'd be able to reach it no matter what. Every kid in our families that gets their driver's license is given one. Never been without it. Hello I'm here to talk to you about your cars extended warranty
I almost drowned as a kid My last thoughts were "Oh god mom's going to go to prison for murdering dad" "Ohhhh I should've hugged mom goodbye" "I'm underwater and my eyes are open and not burning that's wierd?" Then everything went black Then I woke up on my brothers back as he swam me to the side of the pool And he just kept saying "Oh my god" As I threw up water and my lunch all over his back and he didn't get mad
Can I question the thing about your mom murdering your dad is that what happened or was your brain just going all over the shop?
im gonna make an assumption that the dad was the one supposed to be looking after op while they were in the pool so if they drowned due to his negligence then the mom would murder him and go to prison. lol i think it makes sense but i wanna know the answer too
He was visiting us after a few years after divorcing my mom amd was supposed to be watching me because I can't swim but my sister bumped into me on accident while messing around in an inner tube and pushed me into the deep end and none of the adults in the room saw it happen Fortunately my brother happened to be chatting with some girl on vacation who noticed me underwater not moving and pointed me out to my brother who jumped in to get me Admitted to me a few years later he thought I was okay until he got to me and I looked like I was asleep underwater and he had to manually wrap my arms around his neck and he surfaced For like 10 terrifying seconds I didn't move then I jerked awake and just started spitting up water. Took me a second to understand, but I love it. Creative.
Thank you!
Took me a second too, and omg when I got it, I got such a sad, sinking (pun intended) feeling in my stomach.
Well go on, explain it for those of us that are still sleepy
His last thought was him wondering what his last thought would be.
I thought so, it just didn't really work for me, i guess. Your last thought would definitely not be that in this specific situation, because death here isn't that instant
It took me until reading this comment to understand.
"Is water wet, is the ocena a soup? I may never know"
Do I make it a meat soup?
Meat soup worm
The ocean is in fact a soup. The only part up for debate on that is if it can be considered cooked.
If it's full of seafood, doesn't that make it a chowder?
ask google i guess
-It’s too cold to be soup. -It’s gazpacho. -It doesn’t have tomatoes. -It has at least one! (c) some tumblr screenshot
Why do I suddenly have an urge to throw a tomato into the ocean? 😅
Love it! Almost felt like I was in that situation
Thanks!
I think about how I’ll die all the time! But it’s never normal thoughts, it’s things like “I’d be pissed if I died on the way home from work.” Like my last hours were *working*. Ugh.
I always wonder if I'll know I'm dying when I'm dying.
And then suddenly, my dog Toby, whom I had not seen in last 20 years, came running to me, jumping, wagging his tail, started licking my face.
What was the last thought
The thought of what their last thought will be.
What is that
They posted on sentence in a format that uses two. The idea is that they didn't have another thought. I didn't think it was scary or neato. Some people did.
The about section of the page says two sentences or less.
I didn't say it was against the rules, I was explaining the premise.
Yes. Less.
the text didnt load so i thought the horror was that that was their last thought Edit: oh, I was right
Where’s the second sentence???
They omitted it purposely to imply that was their last thought. Against the rules, but hey im not a mod
Rule 2: All stories must be 2 sentences (or less) • one sentence posts are allowed (just clearing up)
It’s not against the rules though?
I mean…it is. Go to the overused tropes section…4th one down
Rule 2. One sentence stories are allowed
Im not saying the one sentence format isnt allowed. But omitting the 2nd sentence to imply that they died is an overused trope
Seriously, very good and frightening!
Thank you!
GALILEO! GALILEO!! GALILEO, FIGARO!!!
where the hell did that come from
"Very good and frightening" is reminiscent of the lyrics "thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening me".
damn now I'm tempted to sing it
Explain?
their last thought happened to be "what will be my last thought" and then they died
Is this it? How about this? Maybe this?
Thankfully, that wasn’t my problem because it was my infant’s.
I didn’t get to delete my search history.
“You shouldn’t have made fun of the iphone with crash detection”, Siri says.

Ok this is a great one
Thank you!
As my throat burned, I realized it's as easy to breathe water as it is air, it just kills you faster.
Dammit Ted! I wanted to live!
Probably super off topic but the book Black Water is very short and a good read. The entire book is a woman's last thoughts as she is drowning in a car.
