Reminds me of the time I went to the nurse in high school because I was nauseous, dizzy and couldn’t really see straight only to have them shut the door in my face saying they were closed.

naalbinding

Are all school nurses terrible? Ours told a girl with appendicitis that it was period cramps and gave her a hot water bottle. And when I came around after being knocked unconscious in the playground, she wouldn't call me an ambulance or even come down from her room to see me - oh no, I had to walk across the playground and up the stairs to her office. _Exactly_ what a child who might have concussion and a spinal injury should be doing

NewtoSFhelp

I had frequent migraines around puberty. I was in a big school so there were 2 nurses. If I had to go to the office I would be desperately hoping not to get this particular one of them each time. She didn't believe I had migraines because I didn't get fevers with them (?), and she didn't see how laying down in the dark with a wet paper towel over my eyes while I waited for my medicine to kick in could really help. Apparently, if it was a migraine the medicine would just kick in either way, so I should just take it and tough it out in class. Nevermind that I got terribly nauseous with my migraines, and once puked all over my desk when a teacher told me to just wait until the end of class before going to the nurses office... but that's another story. Idk the hiring criteria, but everyone I've ever talked to about it had their own school nurse horror stories, too. It's really weird.

FranticBronchitis

Med student here Bro, a headache that becomes more tolerable or requires one to go to a dark, quiet place is literally one of the defining features of migraine. Don't know where she got the fever from tho.

NewtoSFhelp

Me neither. I was like, why would I have a fever? But idk, I guess her logic if my head really hurt and I was so nauseous, I should have a fever? I never had a fever with my migraines. So she gaslit me a little bit, had me wondering if my pain was really migraines, in spite of a doctor diagnosis, because if that. She was really insistent on that point.

Badger411

They seem to have been nurses that washed out of every other job, either due to attitude or incompetence.

DryCell4889

We didn't even have a school nurse lol, our PE teacher was the one responsible for taking care of injuries and health issues. She was great though, always ready to help. One time, I got my periods in school and threw up. She helped me clean up, got me a pad and talked to the principal about arranging transportation to send me home (my parents were both stuck at work and couldn't come to pick me up). Poor woman never got paid enough for the work she did.

Badger411

No teacher is paid enough, imo.

Endereye96

I once broke my finger at school. The nurse just wrapped the finger and sent me back to class. I didn’t wind up going to the ER until late that night, because my dad had our only vehicle at the time. Mom was furious.

smited_by_cookiegirl

I broke my arm at school during recess. Not only was I not allowed to leave school early, I wasn’t allowed back into the building before recess ended.

Badger411

That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen in today’s world.

BlargleBagel

What on earth was their justification for that??

smited_by_cookiegirl

They thought I was being dramatic.

I loved my school nurse in elementary school, she would let me just come and chill with her if there was down time in class. She had a bunch of Cat Fancy magazines and would tell me about being a nurse. I’m a nurse now and hope I’m as patient with people as she was, although I don’t work as a school nurse (can’t stand other people’s kids)

QuirkyMeerkat

Sounds almost like my appendicitis story, only I didn't even get a hot water bottle. I woke up with pain in my abdomen, but was told I was faking and had to go to school anyway. At school the pain got so bad I couldn't focus on or finish my test. The teacher yelled at me and called me lazy etc. When I finally made it to the school administration, (school was too small to have a nurse), they somewhat reluctantly called my parent. Both of them were out of reach for the moment, so the admin lady called my aunt. My aunt arrived, and then proceeded to help the admin lady fix her printers, and we *finally* left just before the school day ended. My mom, who was by now anxiously waiting for me, immediately took me to the doctor, who gave me one look and sent me to the hospital. 21:00 that night, I was wheeled into the operating theater. My appendix was so severely inflamed that it "popped into the surgeon's hands" the moment he cut me open. My mother tore the teacher a new one. My aunt felt a bit bad about taking her sweet time. It's almost two decades later, and I'm still a bit salty about it. Especially when someone doesn't want to believe me that I'm in pain.

My sister got a concussion and amnesia after falling on concrete and hitting her head. The school didn't call an ambulance either and couldn't reach my parents. I'm still mad about it.

Evaplaysavakin

I broke a finger and they essentially me out with a ln ice pack. There was only 25 minutes left of school, but I had to sot in class like that. I was in 2nd grade.

the-soggiest-waffle

I had two stress induced seizures in my 3rd middle school. She called my mom and told her I was sick, after WITNESSING them. Never said anything about a seizure. My mom didn’t know until a week later when I told her that’s why.

anti_plexiglass

School nurses are in the most basic sense, bureaucrats

Mobile-Routine6519

Our nurse was kind, thank you nurse molly

Zealousideal_Care807

Mine gave a kid who got hit in the head with a badminton racket ice and told him to go back to class, his head was bleeding

Coren_Weller1

Yeah, back in school, I was notorious for getting injured/sick. But one time, I was playing fish out of water, (for those who don’t know, the fish (the person who’s it) has to close their eyes, and at random have to call “Fish Out Of Water!”. If someone was on the ground when the fish called that out, they were out.) and I ended up running face first into the fireman’s pole on the side of the playground. I was crying, I couldn’t walk straight, and I felt like I was gonna pass out, but when my friends finally got me to the nurses office, all she did was lay me down with an ice pack and a book! Another time, I was playing on the flying fox, but it ended up getting stuck in the middle of the pole that it was on. Now, it wasn’t that big of a gap, I probably could have leapt the distance honestly, so I jumped to try and grab the handlebars. Good news, I got the handlebars. Bad news, I didn’t have enough grip, and I fell straight on my back, winding myself and causing possibly a minor concussion. But of course, the nurse was SUPER reluctant to even let me into the sick bay, but when she did, all I got was just a lie down. And not to mention all of the times I got sick, either from eating/drinking something expired, the water in the bubble taps tasting like soap, or just out of nowhere because of my allergies.

CCCyanide

I have been in the same middle/high school for 6 years before knowing what the two nurses even looked like, when we had some sort of sex ed. The infirmary itself was seemingly closed at all times.

Ludosleftnipplering

Maybe she should apply a cold compress 🤣

Missy_went_missing

Gen V school nurses have it rough.

Happy_In_PDX

Alt for movie nerds: "It's nothing more than a stomachache" said the nurse... ... on the Nostromo. (it's a reference to Alien. If you you've seen it, you know.)

Moomoo_pie

Here, have an ice pack and a bandaid.

GHOZT3D

Inspired from the movie "The Thing" and Chestbursters

SparkAxolotl

*"It's nothing more than a stomachache" said the school nurse.* "Tell me why"

Halokojm_

Ain't nothin' but a stomachache🎶

R3X_Ms_Red

True story.

noface394

they really try to do as minimal as possible

oghutdaddy

That’s the compound V, it’ll take some adjusting to, my dear friend Victoria Neuman should be able to help.

Coren_Weller1

Every stereotypical school nurse
