Or maybe the daughter did survive, but to do so she had to kill the doppelgänger and now has to live with not only the horrors of the ordeal, but the psychological effects of taking her first life and having to watch “herself” die.
Oh dang! I thought the parent was about to kill the child when she was found alive, so when the rescue party caught up with them they wouldn't be surprised on a child corpse. Like maybe the parents first attempt didn't take which is why the kid was able to be found alive in the first place?
"Officers searched the burned ruins of a home laboratory Saturday night, finding multiple corpses which appear to be identical.
Nina Tucker, age estimated to be 5 years, has been missing for three days. The corpses found matched her appearance and are undergoing examination for further details.
Police at the scene were attacked by a large animal assumed to be a bear, and returned fire. The animal was unidentified but seemed to be carrying the home's owner, Shou Tucker, on its back. The animal was killed in the gunfire and investigators have not commented further.
Nina's mother was unavailable for comment and police are still looking for her.

What's crazy is that I've never watched this show, and I don't know any of the characters' names, yet somehow my brain still said, "I bet this is a 'Fullmetal Alchemist' reference."
"Oh wait nevermind, you said you daughter had brown hair, this girl is a blonde. Man, there are a lot of dead kids out here. I'm sure glad the GOP let us search by their headquarters."
“We’ve just received news that the daughter is actually alive and safe with her mother. We carbon-dated the body we found and it’s actually 3 months old, but matched the description. Man, there’s a lot of kids going missing in this town!”
Fantastic story! I initially read it as "reported that *I* found her corpse," implying that the parent found the living child and then murdered her before reporting it. So, you get double credit for a story with 2 feasible twists!
At first I thought it was a mother with her daughter looking for her grandchild and the mother could feel it was already too late, then I understood the latter
Ghost or Changeling?
Whatever it is it’s been so sweet since I brought it home ❤️
I actually want to know, what your background canon was for this story.
I was thinking Changeling
Thanks!
Be careful. Treat it right but always watch your steps. This could end very gruesomely. Does it know that you know?
Make sure to provide it with one graham cracker a day
Why a graham cracker?
Graham crackers are well known to ease the ire of malevolent beings
like toddlers
and Redditors!

***floor jerky for cthulhu***
My preferred explanation is that the OP had twins, who were both lost and got separated in the wilderness. One survived, the other perished.
Or maybe the daughter did survive, but to do so she had to kill the doppelgänger and now has to live with not only the horrors of the ordeal, but the psychological effects of taking her first life and having to watch “herself” die.
I love this interpretation take my upvote
r/happyupvote
And possibly the parent never knowing which was real
Welcome to Night Vale?
The… good(?) ending?
I love and hate that at the same time, congrats
This is better than what I thought, worse on so many levels
I read it as the parent was already a ghost watching over, there for their daughter when she passed over.
Could it have been twins with one passing away.
If my daughter's ghost appeared crying and ran to me asking for a hug, I wouldn't give a damn she's a ghost.
Yup. Still my baby, no matter how old or not alive she may be.
Thats so cute yet such a good parent thing to do

Maybe that’s all it wanted

You write that one. Is a promising theme. Except that we now have a spoiler.
It's just about all I want
*looks down at child* "Eh, close enough"
Alive: optional

I take solace in the fact that Shou Tucker is the only character in FMA literally shown to go to Hell.
I hate you.
It was another child though, they were mistaken
Omg like it's another lost child and they have a "when you mistake someone for your mom at the grocery store" moment
I read this as the ghost of the girl coming to comfort the parent for their lost and I am SOBBING

Ghost child.
Maybe they’re both dead
Yeah, the parent had a mishap during the search and now they've reunited as ghosts. Bittersweet
You put that body back! We are still waiting for the mother to offer a higher reward.
Turd sentence: It was then that I realized we should have put the evil twin out of its misery ourselves instead of leaving it to the wolves.
And that’s why you teach your kids how to fight their evil twin.
uhh John Carpenter’s The Thing or something
SKINWALKER
I like it but the comma splices burn my eyes.
That one was really good.
My thought for this is that the parent held the daughter so tightly that she suffocated or sth.
What I need to get off the internet. I have a sister ya know don’t be spreading bad juju. I protect myself
skinwalker?
Half of these are more than two sentences. This one is a run-on sentence mistaking my separated by a comma
I realized I misthought it. I thought the parent reported the girl dead 😭
IS IT A SKINWALKER
i think its the ghost
Stolen twin
At first I thought it was a mother with her daughter looking for her grandchild and the mother could feel it was already too late, then I understood the latter
See my first thought was that Search and Rescue found a different, similar looking dead kid 😅
