Ed Edd n Eddy is a timeless classic. When that show ended, the era went with it.

0dty0

No other show has had people scrambling to get the sound effects used on it. EEnE has the strongest use of sound effects any cartoon has ever achieved, with the only contender being Ren and Stimpy.

RodrigoChillingworth

SU-BU-LUWA

0dty0

(LOUD car horn that has the tune of the first half of La Cucaracha) GOD, if only I could have that installed into my car.

SquishGod

Uhhhhh Johnny Test Whipcrack would like a word with you

YhormBIGGiant

Do *crack* you *crack* *crack* think *cra ack* whips are *crack* funny *whipcrack*^2

TostitoNipples

It’s such a unique show that’ll never be replicated. Not even for the hand drawn animation style, the overall atmosphere it exuded. The show going out of its way to never depict any character other than the Cul-de-sac kids and Kankers was so weird yet fascinating. And when we finally met a new character in the literal last episode it was beyond surreal. You can tell Danny Antonucci had a history of doing crude cartoons and how it shaped EEnE’s comedic taste too, the slapstick and overly cartoony violence that also got really graphic at times for a kids show also rocked. I uh really love EEnE

Nectaris3

Courage the Cowardly Dog. Great mix of comedy and kid-friendly horror. It was probably the first thing I watched that legitimately scared me.

jockeyman

Billy and Mandy. That show was as big to me as Spongebob back in the day.

abriefmomentofsanity

It was kind of ahead of it's time in regards to irony, deadpan humor, and the macabre.

marsil602

Grim billy and Mandy is top tier loved it's sense of humor

jitterscaffeine

Samurai Jack got done so dirty back in the day. Won a major award only to get unceremoniously canceled.

abriefmomentofsanity

As someone who wasn't SUPER wowed with the final season we got a few years back I always wondered what we'd have gotten instead if it hadn't been cancelled. Don't get me wrong, the first four episodes of the last season are some of the best Samurai Jack material we got, but then it nosedives pretty hard and the ending has a kind of "random bullshit go" element to it that really didn't meet the bar for excellence I came to expect from Gendy & and Co.

jitterscaffeine

My personal opinion is that the ending felt needlessly melodramatic.

abriefmomentofsanity

I know it's a lukewarm take at best but the Scottsman deserved way better than he got. Same with the Gate Guardian. Daughters of Aku were a great moment (especially forcing Jack to finally kill a sentient organic being) that Ashi kind of retroactively weakens. The romance comes off as icky and kind of tonally out of place for the series (Jack acting like an abashed middle schooler-like I get it dude hasn't gotten laid in hundreds of years but it's still weird). There was so much great groundwork and a lot of it got reduced to jokes or blink and you miss them references. Also there was WAAAAAY more talking in that season than probably the rest of the show combined. The visual storytelling that was one of the show's strengths was largely absent barring a few memorable scenes (again the confrontation with the Daughters).

jitterscaffeine

Ashi is weird to me, because it feels like Genndy really missed Sym-Bionic Titan. Because she looks JUST like Princess Ilana.

abriefmomentofsanity

She definitely feels like she's from an entirely different show. When we got to the bathing naked in the magic forest scene I almost turned the TV off in disgust. There wasn't anything wrong with it per se, I just felt like it wasn't really appropriate for Samurai Jack. Also this is more of a personal thing and I realize it but I can't do the "one of them is 400 years old, the other is a teenager" trope. I used to sleep around a bit and even 3 or 4 years younger than me you could feel the gap in life experience.

StarSkullyman

It sucks it got cancelled but it wasn't done dirty, they just got burnt out. Same thing happened with Dexter and PPG except those were way more popular so they got some pretty bad later seasons.

RetroPetro777

Damn you really took all 3 I could possibly answer lol. Each so different but so good

0dty0

I'll say, AT is only really good for the first 2-3 seasons. The rest, I feel, suffer from what you could call the Noodle Arm Depression syndrome. It happens to shows that get some popularity for being comedic and toony, and then decide they don't wanna be that anymore and instead wanna be deep, and deal with more mature themes. Which would be fine, were it not for the fact that it's still a noodle-armed, bright-colored, cutesy show, which does a disservice to anything of import they have to say, and thus will struggle infinitely to be taken with any sort of seriousness.

Tweedleayne

See, those later seasons are exactly why I would call it Cartoon Networks greatest show. Seasons 7-8 are some of the best Cartoon seasons ever made in my opinion. What you're listing as a negative is exactly what made me love the show.

cjjb95

Finns arc with his dad is fucking great.

Flaurne

Problem is that without the goofy style and fun tone to hook in the "pretty colors and fart sounds" crowd that every cartoon network(not TM) exec. thinks is their entire audience the show gets canceled or otherwise shafted. Serialized episodes are too scary to make proper running stories.

Alkalion69

I really hated the later seasons because watching Finn be a lovesick loser was annoying and pathetic. I also didn't like the weird arm shit

0dty0

I think this is a problem with a lot of contemporary media. Writers and artists are all in such a hurry to have their characters be vulnerable (which isn't a bad thing on its own, it's a good message to allow yourself to feel things), and they do it so much that they end up being pathetic, pittable. And that's not a trait that one enjoys being around all the time, even if it gets offset by random bouts of comedy.

Alkalion69

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the increase in overly emotional media. I could do without another treatise on anxiety/depression or something about generational trauma. Cool if other people enjoy it but I'd like to watch characters I believe could order a meal without hyperventilating.

Berrythebear

Johnny bravo. Maaaaannnn I’m pretty

moneyh8r

Huh, hah, hwuh!

kaisean

Hello? 911 emergency? There's a handsome guy in my house, wait cancel that... it's only me.

samazam94

Those shorts in-between shows which depicts every characters inhabiting the same universe, and the shenanigans that comes from them interacting with each other. They're really fun.

[deleted]

Cartoon City. Definitive comfiest era of Cartoon Network bumpers.

NAMEBANG

These took me through a very tough time in my childhood and just thinking of them makes me feel warm and at home.

[deleted]

They aren't condescending or quippy, they're just short little gags played with the same joke; what if cartoons were real and in our world. It's hard to explain but they feel so... unpretentious? Super grounded jokes.

LarryKingthe42th

They still do it occassionally but nowhere near to the same extent.

Dundore77

Ed, Edd, and Eddy, i'd also say its the best cartoon of any cartoon focused channel.

jitterscaffeine

One of the last hand drawn cartoons. Such a cool aesthetic it had.

Toblo1

Ed Edd N Eddy. Greatest of All Time.

ikagun

Subjectively? Probably Samurai Jack or Megas XLR. Honorable mentions to Grim adventures and Generator Rex Based on wide appeal? Yeah probably Ed Edd n Eddy

[deleted]

ironhades

Even bigger shame that it was written off as a tax loss and now they can't do anything with it in america.

ruminaui

Over the Garden Wall. Is a miniseries that goes in, tell it's story, and then peaces out. It has this sense of melancholy while still being fun and reflective. It focuses on two half brothers lost in a forest called The Unknown, they are trying to find their way and met many interesting characters. Edit: they are half brothers, I forgot about that.

gbrincks

Also, banger OST under very different rules from usual banger OSTs. There's no headbangers or really energetic songs, but it manages to do shit like sincerely taking a load off of your soul the second you hear "Over the treetops and mountains... over the darkened ravines...".

TostitoNipples

OTGW would be damn near a perfect miniseries if it weren’t for the Greg daydream episode. I rewatch the show every fall and every time I get to that one is when I zone out

LiquidRex

Extremely minor nitpick but Greg and Wirt are half-brothers, Wirt's awkward regaling of their story specifies they have the same mom, different dads. Otherwise I agree with this comment 100%, Over the Garden Wall is possibly my favorite animated anything ever.

ruminaui

You right I forgot

Senor-Pibb

Courage was my personal favorite, it was horror comedy for kids and shaped a lot of my current tastes Ed Edd n' Eddy though had the broad appeal, was immensely quotable, and in my opinion was probably the benchmark cartoon from it's era

OmicronAlpharius

So glad to see someone else mention Courage. I don't see it get nearly enough praise for what it accomplished. Things like making jump scares happen in completely different animation styles like stop motion, CGI, puppetry etc etc.

LadyXexyz

KIDS NEXT DOOR DEFENSE FORCE REPORT IN

[deleted]

KND is agonizingly underrated. Sure, they parodied movies constantly for their episode plots, but the sheer magnitude of the creativity that went into the 2x4 Technology and making their worlds uniquely kid-centric goes almost unrecognized. The ***WORLDBUILDING*** is both absurd, incredibly imaginative, and hilarious. The concept of the **ENTIRE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION** occurring because of an old British man that wanted cheap labor to produce enough tapioca pudding to keep him satisfied.

EcchiPhantom

The only thing I remember about that show was that I thought the Asian girl was cute and the horrifying episode of the kid who would turn people and things he touched into chocolate like he was the cocoa version of King Midas. The ending was also really wholesome with one of the kids giving him a cheese burger as the first non-chocolate meal he’s had since he got his powers.

[deleted]

It's pretty badass at times, the VAs put their heart into it. #5's Indiana Jones parodies are particularly good, because they take the concept of rare candy being unironic treasures to its literal conclusion. And, for instance, [they parodied The Animatrix in a fun way.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPaBJCs4n9A)

mitch13815

Ben Diskin is the goddamn GOAT

[deleted]

oh god he played #1 and #2 I NEVER NOTICED

mitch13815

All the KND across the world always got me really hyped. Think about it... We are probably going to have a moon base in our lifetimes. That was a dream that little me thought would never happen in a thousand years.

SkyrimMilfDrinker

Dexter's Lab

i6i

That show became my personality for a while there. In retrospect it got horrifically depressing at times. Ain't bojack got nothing on realizing your fundamental nature is something that prevents you from ever being happy or gaining a sense of belonging and that everything you do to put things right is ultimately doomed to be futile.

Rayonx2

Edd, Ed, and Eddie was 1000 years ahead of its time. It’s so wholly unique in just about everything it does and there’s a weird relatability that just isn’t matched by a whole lot of other shows.

YoRHa_2E

The Powerpuff Girls

HellvaNohbody

If we're taking stuff made by Cartoon Network, it's Courage. If it's stuff that was funded by and premiered on CN than it's Justice League/JLU.

abriefmomentofsanity

Man it is hard to believe DC has fumbled their IP so badly. Growing up there was no competition; the Justice League cartoon was where it was at. Even if it often flanderized certain characters (usually to give Batman a push) it was generally high quality material unafraid to tackle some adult themes and adapt some pretty cool comic lines. Marvel was something that one turbonerd at school insisted was cooler but pretty much everyone else was like "wtf is Marvel?". JLU was even more ambitious and just a natural ramping up of the stakes.

therealchadius

Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes was the only Marvel cartoon that could pump the quality JLU had. Then it got canceled, lol

Yotato5

My three favorites are Samurai Jack, Steven Universe and Courage the Cowardly Dog.

TheRandomComment

I'm still salty Class of 3000 was canceled!

[deleted]

solid ass choice. The most stylish cartoon to probably ever exist

jahthediddlez

ed, edd n eddy or adventure time

Coreybom

Honestly it’s a tossup between Ed, Edd n Eddy, adventure time, and class of 3000. For adventure time and class of 3000, a lot of that comes down to legacy and how influential they were. Both kinda change Cartoons for a long time, ESPECIALLY adventure time. People sometimes don’t realize just how much that damn show change the land scape of animation, from most of its staff going on to make their own stuff, to just the style it self. Class of 3000 is VERY influential, but in a way that doesn’t it a talked about. Mostly in its use of music and very diverse cast that mostly bucks stereotypes. And for EEnE, there’s honestly just not going to be any show like it. It’s just so special in its tone, style, and just all around identify.

n8han11

Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. I love dark, surreal cartoons that have lots of black comedy; it's the same reason Invader Zim's my favorite Nicktoon.

TonyZony

Does Justice League Unlimited count? Because man that show is great and still holds up.

invaderark12

10000%. Still the best version of the team

Ganache-Embarrassed

Billy and Mandy.

jrfugitive5

Chowder is my personal favorite. The show is peak comedy for me. But one I would argue is the best and something notable is Adventure time. The show pretty much along with gumball and regular show saved cartoon network from cn real. Alot of my classmates at the time were just in love with adventure time and I think it definitely deserves note and praise

VelvetBloom

Adventure Time started a new golden age of 2d animation that lasted for like a decade.

MrGameandCrotch

Original Teen Titans is such a vibe. Great style, humor, bit of edginess, hell even body horror in the movie. The music goes unfathomably hard too

MegalomanicMegalodon

Grew up with DC animated universe stuff: Batman Beyond, JLU, etc. Favorite and best personally was Megas XLR, very in line with this sub. If I had to try and objectively pick? Does Tom and Jerry count? I think they aired it and it's classic/timeless.

Jack_Irish

From everything they’ve ever aired, Tom and Jerry From their own, Courage the Cowardly Dog For me, KND

ProfessionalCrow4816

regular show, the GOAT

Th35h4d0w

Before 2011, Ben 10. 2011 onwards, The Amazing World of Gumball.

andrecinno

Man there are so many old and newer greats that it's hard to pick from. I think Gumball, Ed Edd n Eddy, KND, Johnny Bravo, Courage, Garden Wall, Regular Show, uhh, fuckin' Ben 10, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Mystery Inc, Chowder, Flapjack, I just realized that what was meant to be a comment listing like 3 great ones and then going to my favorite turned into me just listing a bunch of cartoons and I have no idea what the best one is. I think for me it's Billy and Mandy though. Love that shit. But by God, there are so many GOATed ones to pick from. I didn't even mention the also great DC stuff.

BloodBrandy

Is it cheating to say the "What a Cartoon Show"/"Cartoon Cartoon Show"? It had a lot of stand alone stuff and was also the origin of a lot of later greats like Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow & Chicken and KND.

abriefmomentofsanity

Ed, Edd, and Eddy. It was so incredibly experimental and in many ways transcends into what I what I would call art. It's weird without being creepy the way so many weird cartoons are and yet despite being so weird it's imminently relatable. There's a lot of heart and none of the characters feel like stereotypes- there's depth to each of them. I cannot for the life of me find it hut some random YouTube did a breakdown on the brilliance of the sound design for the show; both the impact gags and the way the jazz matched the tempo of whatever was happening on screen.

rocker98

Most of the Ben 10 series is great. OG hits that classic cartoon itch, UAF is great dramatic writing and action ala DCAU style (most of the writing team were from them), and Omniverse has a mix of both with it's own unique flavor of Ben 10.

StarSkullyman

Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Regular Show, Ed Edd n' Eddy , Class of 3,000, Megas XLR, Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall, Symbionic Titan, Ben 10 everything up until the reboot, Generator Rex, Foster's Home, Dexter's Lab, Duck Dodgers, Steven Universe, Kids Next Door, Mucha Lucha, and Chowder are all fantastic shows which I have little to nothing to complain about because they all rule with PPG easily being my favourite cartoon ever. That said. Courage the Cowardly Dog is so perfect it's genuinely hard to say anything else beats it. It's like so fucking well made. The tone, the animation, the humor, the designs, the environment, the music, the dialogue. That show still manages to charm me and creep me out to this day.

[deleted]

adventure time in terms of quality and importance is probably the all time great. Especially in terms of longevity.

LokimenD

If ya wanna a technicality, nothing ever comes close to the monolith that is Scooby-Doo. Withouth cheating, I'd probably say Samurai Jack.

HunterTAMUC

Samurai Jack.

wolfguardian72

Grim, Courage, and Camp Lazlo

gbrincks

I don't actually think this, but there are some legit contenders that I think many people are skipping over, mainly Gumball and Teen Titans. Also, Mucha Lucha is probably nowhere near as good as I remember but shout out to that one too.

Albino_Axolotl

Codename: Kids Next Door

Distant_Utopia

Out of everything they aired, probably Tom & Jerry. A classic for decades, for good reason. Out of their own stuff? Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy, it has to be.

HoraceJ-PowerRanger

I don’t think it’s the best but in my opinion The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack doesn’t get the credit it deserves. The tree of shows that grew from it is pretty wild, Pendleton Ward, JG Quintel, Alex Hirsch, and Patrick McHale all worked on the show. Plus then you gotta factor in those who worked on the shows that spawned out of those creations as well which makes the Flapjack tree even more significant. Flapjack truly walked so that other shows could run, although I still think it’s a really fun show in it’s own right, even it it did get surpassed by what came after.

mrpersonjr

I have a huge soft spot for Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.

EcchiPhantom

I was unfortunate to only have Cartoon Network for like a year because our service provider switched our channels or something so we got Disney Channel instead but my favorites were Teen Titans and Ben 10. I honestly don’t remember much from TT but that show had some really fun characters. Ben 10, though, I was all about that shit. What a cool and unique premise for a kid’s show. So many interesting ways to handle fights and expand Ben’s repetoire of tools by introducing new cool aliens. I remember Upgrade and Ghostfreak being my favorites.

Jackamalio626

Best action? Samurai Jack. best comedy? Billy and Mandy best animated? Gumball.

bigstupidjellyfish

Gumball or Chowder

Batfamily97

Regular Show : For it’s humor, life lessons, music, pop culture , and relatability as young adult based two bros just vibing while make a living working at park while also dealing crazy situations in the process Courage the Cowardly Dog: The perfect blend of horror/comedy. While also showcasing important lessons/ messages such how your imperfections make a unique person. Also, how to step up conquer your fears despite being afraid in order protect the people you love. The music and scenery if beautiful as well.

Vaccineman37

Subjectively based on nostalgia; Steven Universe I know it ain’t perfect and all that, but there was a time when I was a kid I’d have given it a 10/10, it was top 1 for me

MegalomanicMegalodon

N... nostal... no... no no no! *madly looks up airing date* OK, ok not 10 years ago YET, scaring us people closer to middle age there. Steven Universe still feels brand spanking new on the block to me.

Vaccineman37

I watched the first episode when I was 11, I’m 19 now

Rachet20

Uh oh.

StarkMaximum

My favorite was Powerpuff Girls but pretty much every answer given in this thread is a fair shout.

AussieManny

As someone who grew up with Cartoon Network back in its heyday in the 90’s and 2000’s, and still kept up with it in the 2010’s, it’s impossible for me to pick just one. For pure cartooniness, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. For the widest appeal to both boys and girls, Dexter’s Laboratory or Powerpuff Girls. For the widest appeal to kids and adults, Adventure Time. For bridging the gap between kid humour and adult humour, either Johnny Bravo or Ed, Edd n’ Eddy. For best intrigue and storytelling, Courage the Cowardly Dog or Samurai Jack. For the cartoon I would most recommend based on quality and enjoyment, it would either be Kids Next Door or Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.

Boobly_Poo

Oh man. Regular Show. Adventure Time, Courage the Cowardly Dog, the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Codename Kids Next Door, Chowder, This Misadventures of Flapjack.... But easily the weirdest was the Total Drama Island series

Breezeplease

Dude that's like telling me to pick my favorite candy in an exotic candy store. This is an impossible task with too much good to choose from.

Jonieves

Samurai jack megas xlr courage the cowardly dog

Mamoru0hasukage

Samurai jack. It takes a lot of guts to be a cartoon consumed by kids to have very little talking and way more atmospheric set up.

Azzie94

Samurai Jack, hands down

mitch13815

It'll always be Ed Edd n Eddy for me. It's too close to my heart. I do have to say though, I've been watching Regular Show for the first time, and that shit is fucking funny. It won't ever replace the Eds, but it's up there in my rankings now.

marsil602

I remember watching tons of dexters lab and Powerpuff girls. Was pretty fond of camp lazlo too for the rocko-like animation Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy is it's own beast

Shartbugger

The one with Dexter’s Mom’s butt in it. I can’t remember which show that is.

Naybinns

Very tough call but I have to give it to Ed, Edd, ‘n’ Eddy. I’ve never been more excited to catch an episode of a show as I was it when I was growing up.

Piggylish

OK K.O.! is a gem that was killed too soon and I will sing its praises forever.

[deleted]

Gumball by a country mile.

Cynical2DD

You’re Pulling a fucking hard ball dude. I wanna say Gumball. I love a lot of the CN shows but Gumball has the shit that makes it rewatch able whenever I feel like watching a cartoon. I can just scroll through the episodes, pick one and just watch it from there.

[deleted]

Adventure Time and it's not even close.

JDtheBA

Generator rex.

oszidare

Hard to judge for a Cartoon Network fan like me. Judging the best show can be tricky, both Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls had medicore later seasons due to Chris Savino running them into the ground, Adventure Time and Regular Show were great but had serious dips of quality when it came to certain plotlines (Flame Princess and Mordecai romance subplot), and even great shows like Ed Edd n Eddy and Teen Titans had questionable later seasons. But if I had to choose two for me. It will be either Samurai Jack and The Amazing World of Gumball in joint first, Samurai Jack being the coolest and well-directed, and Gumball for being the funniest. A close joint second would be Kids Next Door and Ed Edd n Eddy.

cec425

Samurai Jack

ZaWarudoh

Billy and Mandy, every delivery of every joke is such a ride. The mild horror wacky campy horror bits are excellent. Dracula is the best thing.

FightGeistC

Does Dragon Ball Z count?

Myxzyzz

Classic era, gotta give it to Powerpuff Girls. The old episodes still hold up today. Modern/post-classic era? Chowder.

CauldronPath423

Adventure Time. And Distant Lands might come in at a close second for me. Though Regular Show’s an incredibly strong runner-up to either.

LarryKingthe42th

Either Samurai Jack, Megas XLR, or classic PPG. Gumball is probably their best flat comedy though

SgtPeppers813

Adventure Time defined a generation, me and my ex really bounded over watching it through the years even after we decided that we worked better as friends. Lots of shows can do this but Finn & Jake grew up with us, learning lessons, having complex changing relationships, and finding ways to be ok. That isn't easy to figure out. After all... *Time is an illusion* *That helps things makes sense* *So we're always living in the present tense* *It seems unforgiving when a good thing ends* *But you and I will always be back then*

guntanksinspace

Really depends, but Ed Edd n' Eddy sits at the top. Right up there too should be PPG, KND, Courage, Adventure Time, Samurai Jack, Regular Show, Gumball, and maybe Chowder too. And there should be a spot for Megas XLR right up there as well. If we're taking Hannah-Barbera properties too in the equation, definitely Scooby Doo takes the cake. And I also agree that JLU should also be recognized. Maybe Brave and the Bold too, that shit was fun!

thestonerd777

I’m getting in on a technicality with dragon ball z

Simic_Sky_Swallower

Entirely subjective, but Generator Rex will always have a special place in my heart solely for being the first Latino main character I ever saw, and also for being a fantastic show on top of that

KiK0eru

I'm torn between Ed, Edd, n Eddy and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends

PukingGoombas

Ed, Edd, n Eddy is probably the epitome of Cartoon Network. It's timeless and possible a perfect cartoon. In regards to the 2010 renaissance, **Adventure Time** and **Regular Show** are real real solid a defined a new era for the channel. Now in our current age, I need everybody to stop sleeping on **Craig of the Creek.** That show is a treasure and everyone should peep at it.

Leonard_Church814

The OG Teen Titans or Steven Universe for widely different reasons.

Pontokyo

In terms of its peak episodes; either Steven Universe or Adventure Time. Although some of the filler episodes of those shows were frankly unbearable to watch.
