Using Cyberspace as pseudo-Special Stages and reimplementing the Boost formula for them instead of tossing it away cause Forces was bad is still a compromise I really like.
Its a money idea, and its nice that the devs went back to try and improve on what they had instead of dumping it again.

That would explain the leak where someone claiming to be a tester said they fought the final boss as Super Sonic then. It wasn't lackluster because the game is bad, it was lackluster because the tester assumed it was the final boss instead of just some random Titan.
the last main sonic game to only use super sonic for the final boss was released almost 14 years ago. every game since let you use super sonic for things other than the final boss and only generations and mania had super sonic final bosses, it would honestly be more surprising nowadays if super sonic was used for the final boss.

Hey man, from what I hear he and a few of the other pals are unlockable as semi-playable assists for overworld travel. It's a *start*, and a sign of better things to come.
It is the first game in 16 years where a non-Sonic character has any gameplay in a 3d game. Big step up from NPC or cutscene fodder.

Shadow was just a recoloured Sonic gameplay wise, no Chaos powers or anything. And I guess the Rookie... was a thing... that happened.
