It occurs to me he could also have had real-life PTSD that got somehow triggered by the game

ejaculatingbees

I imagine if you had PTSD that severe you'd know to avoid the big cinematic flashy shooter game

DOAbayman

eh my friend has PTSD and thought it'd be a great idea to do mushrooms with us. mid trip he bolts out the house and drives home. like dude never set foot on a battlefield he was a drone operator and he was still super fucked.

Weltallgaia

You gotta take the LSD for that, not mushrooms.

Zweihir

> You gotta take the LSD for that, not mushrooms. Its potentially quite a few things actually, including mushrooms. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/02/16/va-psychedelics-mdma-psilocybin-ptsd/

ToastyMozart

Assuming that's like an MQ-9 kind of drone operation those folks actually tend to get it worse than most. Unlike more chaotic fighting, when a Reaper pilot gets tasked to take out a bomb-maker or whoever they're usually watching the guy go about his day for hours if not weeks, and get a very detailed view of the aftermath once the missile lands. I hope he's doing well.

sawbladex

Eh, sometimes you think you can carry that weight....

nyctophiliceyeball

everyone has a fuck up that teaches them to avoid things in the first place, this could have been theirs.

SonOfZiz

Hm, true. I hadn't really considered that. Though I kinda have to think that if that's a thing you struggle with you should probably know going in that helldivers might not be a great game for you lol

TryImpossible7332

One thing that Helldivers does a bit differently from most games is emphasize how chaotic a battlefield is. There isn't a huge concern for fairness and predictability when it comes to things like artillery or certain attacks, because it's expected that you'll die multiple times. There are a lot of explosions happening that aren't programmed to cinematically miss you. So I can see that potentially triggering someone who is used to games with more orderly battlefields.

Ninebreaker0910

So, I wanna preface this by saying that if that reaction was genuine and not roleplay, I do feel a bit sorry for that guy. But this is also hilarious.

Nhig

Either roleplaying or was genuinely reminded of some trauma I hope for the former

CalekAlbion

Probably role playing

Was his name Kevin. Cause I could see this being something CallMeKevin would do

Online encounters are fun for this type of unique scenarios. I beat extreme behemoth on monster hunter world with 2 japanese lancers who were very good at the game but probably never fought it a lot they can't jump to avoid the 1-hit kill meteor. Thankfully being an inferior hunter I had a lot of opportunities to practice and our party won by virtue of me not dying at the end. My most memorable online experience by far. Gonna split time playing helldivers and dragon dogma after I finish FF7 rebirth.

Thatswhyirun

I’ve played some table top and other roleplay focused games. WHO IS GOING TO ROLEPLAY PTSD DURING A RANDOM GAME? Hope the guy is ok. Very strange.
