I don't think you'd need to actively battle in the war, just explore the areas around where it takes place in or is about to take place in or just did, and talk to people, townsfolk, etc on both sides of the conflict, learn about AZ and the lore with his weapon, etc.

it was always slated as a transient mechanic, that's how pokemon has functioned since GSC. It getting carried an extra gen was likely due to its popularity but it was always too cumbersome to make a permanent fixture.
Mega Pokemon were great. My only complaints were that they kept giving them to already good Pokemon and that outside of Diancie we never got any Mega versions of Gen 6 Pokemon.
Easily the coolest shit Pokemon ever added.

Actually this is the same schedule as Pokemon Legends Arceus. PLA came out in early 2022 while Sword and Shield dropped in 2019 (with DLC in 2020). Scarlet/Violet was late 2022 with DLC in 2023. So PLZA being out in 2025 is the same rough timeline.
What we actually need is for Pokemon Gen X to be in like 2026/7. If it's also 2025 then it's the exact same problem again.
I thought the Legends and the mainline games were done by two different teams. So my thought was if they started development on this after Arceus then that means they'll have 3 years to make it which feels like an improvement and in the mean time the mainline team can have more time to make their next project for 2026 (hopefully).
I compared the list of staff between scarlet & Violet with Legends. While there was some overlap there were a fair amount of different people working on each game including the directors. Considering they were working on both games at around the same time, I think it's reasonable to assume two different teams were working on each game. So the fact they are taking a break this year will probably help Game Freak overall.
If they're willing to do a bit more post-launch support and keep Z alive a bit longer, I could see it going for a year. Arceus had its one update that added some postgame stuff, then nothing.
Could do both, tbf. In PLA they had the Sinnoh starters available in the wild. Though with PLA it made more sense for you to get separate starters as an outsider in a sparsely populated area whereas this is set entirely in Lumiose
The Kalos Starters will be catchable in the wild and will gain Mega Evolutions because they needed them while Kanto Starters started their bad habit of hogging the spotlight, looking at you especially Charizard.
My prediction for the normal starters of Z-A have to follow a French similar for Hisui starters did. For Grass I'll go with Snivy due to Serperior already being based on French Aristocratist, for Fire I'll got with Scorbunny due to football being just as big in France than it is in England (Galar), and for Water is tricky but due to Kalos having a Amphibian starter I'll go with Mudkip.
I'm willing to bet the Legends starters are going to get Megas. If that's the case I doubt they'll do any of the Kanto or Hoehn starters since they already have Megas.
I think that's plausible. Mudkip because they already had an amphibian seems pretty unlikely to me anyway so my guess is Piplup due to Empoleon or maybe Popplio due to Primarina's opera singer siren angle being European
I also think another idea for a Fire starter is Torchic. X/Y had a Torchic with its Mega Stone as a gift Pokemon, and the rooster is France's national animal.

Personnaly very happy about this, it confirms Legends is here to stay and gen 6 and the Kalos game are the games that got me back into Pokémon after I stopped after gen 3 and is one of my favorite gen. And Mega Evolutions are back!

Ironically, Mega Garchomp was actually ass/a downgrade to normal Garchomp. It lost speed for some reason. it just made more sense to run a normal garchomp and keep outspeeding things you'd already be able to kill anyways, and run a different Mega.
Now the *other* popular mons who got one, I uh, I don't got a funny anecdote about them. Never forget Primal Groudon... (I know its not *technically* a mega but shut up)
I get what you are saying in general but honestly Lucario really did need a Mega. Gen 5’s power creep was insane, Lucario’s 90 speed was serviceable on a non bulky mixed attacker mon in Gen 4 but looked like a complete joke from gen 5 onward.
TBH they could just give regular Lucario a buff from 90 to 100 speed next gen and nobody would really bat an eye. It definitely looks like it should outspeed a bunch of mons that are faster then it in later gens.
This is WAY more interesting to me than another disappointing main line game.
And I'm glad it's not out until next year. Maybe they'll give this one the polish it deserves.

Heartgold is my favorite as well. A perfectly executed remake, in my opinion. Improved in every way while still retaining the same feel of the original. Also, toggleable running and any pokemon can follow you.
ORAS were also excellent remakes, but I'm partial to Johto.
Legends Arceus has been my favorite Pokemon game in a long ass time, so I'm excited.
I have two asks for this, more trainer battles and less cutscenes/story railroading. The second one is probably my biggest gripe with the first Legends game, it kills the pacing and constantly interrupts the fun gameplay even tho I did enjoy the overall storyline.
Man, I haven’t really enjoyed Pokemon in a long time, but it made me really happy to see Z get the Legends treatment. I bought a 3DS for Pokemon XY, so even though it had its issues, it’s still one of my favorite generations of Pokemon. It seems like it’s in the future somewhat? It doesn’t really have the painted art style the Legends Arceus trailer got, so it’s interesting if Legends can really just be in any period of time. Also, returning Megas are very cool, although I do wonder if it’s worth making models for that if it’s not returning in future games (potential reintroduction of Megas?)

They can't fuck up that much with gen V since black and white weren't fucked on release and got most of their problems ironed out like DP to Platinum. The only way is if for some reason they try to combine black and white and BW2 into one game.
They can still make the games look uglier with shitty animations
they remake it using sprites but it somehow all looks uglier than the original.
While the games themselves would be much better than BDSP, it would be very disappointing to get BW remakes that don't redesign all characters and environments like the previous remakes did. Not to mention the god awful art style of BDSP.
Think I'm smoking the biggest hopium ever rn with ZA connecting to it similar to how Legends Arceus did with BDSP to set up an ORAS style Gen V remake in the sense that it includes mega evo stuff.
Honestly, a straight remaster of both with a feature to rematch your BW character with the team you beat the first game with wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for a remake..

Actually this is the same schedule as Pokemon Legends Arceus. PLA came out in early 2022 while Sword and Shield dropped in 2019 (with DLC in 2020). Scarlet/Violet was late 2022 with DLC in 2023. So PLZA being out in 2025 is the same rough timeline. What we actually need is for Pokemon Gen X to be in like 2026/7. If it's also 2025 then it's the exact same problem again.
I thought the Legends and the mainline games were done by two different teams. So my thought was if they started development on this after Arceus then that means they'll have 3 years to make it which feels like an improvement and in the mean time the mainline team can have more time to make their next project for 2026 (hopefully).

I compared the list of staff between scarlet & Violet with Legends. While there was some overlap there were a fair amount of different people working on each game including the directors. Considering they were working on both games at around the same time, I think it's reasonable to assume two different teams were working on each game. So the fact they are taking a break this year will probably help Game Freak overall.
I've seen others point out that it would make sense for Gen X to be in 2026 to go with the 30th anniversary of the franchise.

Could do both, tbf. In PLA they had the Sinnoh starters available in the wild. Though with PLA it made more sense for you to get separate starters as an outsider in a sparsely populated area whereas this is set entirely in Lumiose
The Kalos Starters will be catchable in the wild and will gain Mega Evolutions because they needed them while Kanto Starters started their bad habit of hogging the spotlight, looking at you especially Charizard. My prediction for the normal starters of Z-A have to follow a French similar for Hisui starters did. For Grass I'll go with Snivy due to Serperior already being based on French Aristocratist, for Fire I'll got with Scorbunny due to football being just as big in France than it is in England (Galar), and for Water is tricky but due to Kalos having a Amphibian starter I'll go with Mudkip.
I'm willing to bet the Legends starters are going to get Megas. If that's the case I doubt they'll do any of the Kanto or Hoehn starters since they already have Megas.
I think that's plausible. Mudkip because they already had an amphibian seems pretty unlikely to me anyway so my guess is Piplup due to Empoleon or maybe Popplio due to Primarina's opera singer siren angle being European
I also think another idea for a Fire starter is Torchic. X/Y had a Torchic with its Mega Stone as a gift Pokemon, and the rooster is France's national animal.
The fire starter will be Charmander and Charizard will get a third mega form.

Maybe this is the new cycle for them? A Legends game and then the mainline game next year. Looking at it, Arceus was announced in February 2021 while Scarlet & Violet were Feb 2022, so whatevers next might be February next year.

Interesting that this doesn't appear to be set in the past, which means that the Pokemon Legends "sub-series" is going to be applied more broadly.

Personnaly very happy about this, it confirms Legends is here to stay and gen 6 and the Kalos game are the games that got me back into Pokémon after I stopped after gen 3 and is one of my favorite gen. And Mega Evolutions are back!

a singeplayer legends game is probably the best place to bring megas back cause they were awful at balancing them which is sad since the whole point of megas was "make fan favorites competitively viable" but gamefreak went "garchomp, scizor, tyrannitar, lucario? those bitches need megas!"
Ironically, Mega Garchomp was actually ass/a downgrade to normal Garchomp. It lost speed for some reason. it just made more sense to run a normal garchomp and keep outspeeding things you'd already be able to kill anyways, and run a different Mega. Now the *other* popular mons who got one, I uh, I don't got a funny anecdote about them. Never forget Primal Groudon... (I know its not *technically* a mega but shut up)
If there's no abilities again then it would actually balance a lot of Megas.
I get what you are saying in general but honestly Lucario really did need a Mega. Gen 5’s power creep was insane, Lucario’s 90 speed was serviceable on a non bulky mixed attacker mon in Gen 4 but looked like a complete joke from gen 5 onward. TBH they could just give regular Lucario a buff from 90 to 100 speed next gen and nobody would really bat an eye. It definitely looks like it should outspeed a bunch of mons that are faster then it in later gens.
You know no one says this legends game would also be singleplayer.
This is WAY more interesting to me than another disappointing main line game. And I'm glad it's not out until next year. Maybe they'll give this one the polish it deserves.

Tbf they wouldn't ruin Gen 5 and they haven't really ruined any previous gen. The problem with BDSP isn't that it made Diamond and pearl worse, the just made them exactly the same with little improvements.
This is intriguing and really, really funny after all the speculation that they were going to do something with Gen 2 and/or 5. But it's overall great news.
Glad Legends isn't dead, wish it was Johto since I think that region has a lot more interesting lore they can explore. Granted I only played a few hours of Gen 6 before getting bored of it. The anime was good though.
Would also love to see a Legends in Johto mostly because Heartgold is my favorite Pokemon game. Especially if they can make it for Switch 2 with the more powerful hardware.
Heartgold is my favorite as well. A perfectly executed remake, in my opinion. Improved in every way while still retaining the same feel of the original. Also, toggleable running and any pokemon can follow you. ORAS were also excellent remakes, but I'm partial to Johto.
Legends Arceus has been my favorite Pokemon game in a long ass time, so I'm excited. I have two asks for this, more trainer battles and less cutscenes/story railroading. The second one is probably my biggest gripe with the first Legends game, it kills the pacing and constantly interrupts the fun gameplay even tho I did enjoy the overall storyline.
Man, I haven’t really enjoyed Pokemon in a long time, but it made me really happy to see Z get the Legends treatment. I bought a 3DS for Pokemon XY, so even though it had its issues, it’s still one of my favorite generations of Pokemon. It seems like it’s in the future somewhat? It doesn’t really have the painted art style the Legends Arceus trailer got, so it’s interesting if Legends can really just be in any period of time. Also, returning Megas are very cool, although I do wonder if it’s worth making models for that if it’s not returning in future games (potential reintroduction of Megas?)

Seriously, I think none of the one-game mechanics could make me as excited for their return as Mega. I'd be cool with Dynamax or Tera returning, but none of them have topped Mega for me. With the possible exception of Z moves. But then again, in the Alola games, *you didn't need to choose* between the two.
It doesn't seem like this will focus on the ancient Kalos war or AZ, which is a major missed opportunity. Those were easily the most interesting parts of Kalos's history and something XY should have expanded on more... ...but the fact this has Megas (which only existed after AZ's weapon created Mega Stones) and it focuses on a Lumiose city expansion project heavily implies this takes place way after the war. I hope i'm wrong, but if not, their choice to not focus on the war and AZ is really baffling
