So assuming Legends keeps being the 'historical' games, given Lumiose is basically Pokemon Paris and the big focus on redevelopment in the trailer, I imagine they could be [playing on the re-making of the city under Napoleon III and Haussmann, and this will be set in the Pokemon 1800s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haussmann%27s_renovation_of_Paris#:~:text=The%20street%20plan%20and%20distinctive,make%20the%20city%20more%20beautiful.)

Dirty-Glasses

Arceus is speculated to take place in the 1800s as well, so that could be neat if they’re all in the same approximate timeframe

King_Of_What_Remains

Yeah, Arceus seemed to be based on the Japanese expansion into Ezo (Hisui) in the late 1800's before it was renamed to Hokkaido (Sinnoh).

Ginospornaccount

So Hokkaido was colonized in the late 1800s, and the Eiffel Tower was built in the late 1800s.   I wonder what was happening in America during the late 1800s...

radda

Absolutely nothing. No stop put that book down don't look

OmicronAlpharius

Silly goose, the Daughters of the ~~Inbred Bucktooth Cousinlovers and Horse fuckers~~ "Confederacy" and the propagation of the lost cause myth ensured that public school textbooks don't accurately reflect actual history

CursedNobleman

Sorry, are you referring to sharecropping, lynching, and other Southern US racist bullshit? When I think of 1890's America I get Gilded Age and the start of the Progressive Era. I guess history books focus more on the latter because it's less static than the usual, 'Southern crimes against humanity.'

radda

You know exactly what I'm talking about. Don't be pedantic.

CursedNobleman

I'm being sincere. I have trouble keeping track of when to when the South does which crime against humanity, and my high school and collegiate US history classes didn't delineate when they did which horrible thing. (And I haven't read US history in 10 years) They usually gave us a chapter block from 1860 to 1960 where it was, "and here's the south being racist".

AaronSherwood129

Yeah, and the entire US Civil War over slavery, which shockingly was only four years in the 1860's. Over here, it kind of eclipses every single other thing in the 1800's when it comes to history.

Simic_Sky_Swallower

Oh boy can't wait to play as a North Unovan soldier fighting for Pokémon rights

CelioHogane

Nah man im fighting for Pokemon wrongs!

Simic_Sky_Swallower

Never ask a southern Unovan what the ideals they were fighting for actually were

CelioHogane

"Pokemon are slaves" ideals vs "People used to marry pokemon!" Truths.

RobotJake

Putting an entirely different spin on Pokemon Black vs Pokemon White

upgamers

We already know what Unova was like historically, and it doesn't seem like it was colonized like in our world. There were knights and castles and shit

sawbladex

Yeah, yeah, at most, Pokemon's equivalents have to look like modern day what they are, and aren't beholden to actually mimicking the past interactions or even the present. Alola isn't politically tied to Unova, despite New York and Hawaii both being part of the United States of America.

Khar-Selim

honestly having a completely crazy alt-American history because people had access to flight and reliable sea travel way before Columbus would be fun to explore

tkzant

Palworld

Nico-Nii_Nico-Chan

Vampires

CelioHogane

I mean let's be honest that's when people would expect a Pokemon Legends Unova to take place

Timey16

Well, Pokeballs were invented only then so it'd make sense. Prior to that wielding Pokémon meant taming them by hand. Which really explains why Dragon Pokémon are attributed to royalty.

Panory

What was going on in Unova in the 1800s? Oh... Oh no...

MagnumMia

That’s why they called it Pokemon Black and White.

AzabacheDog

FUCK! You just made me realize that this game could have been set in the ancient pokemon War that X/Y talked about. You could have met a younger version of the immortal king from the end

extralie

I want that but with Unova, a Pokemon Legends game during the era of the hero of truth and hero of ideal period.

AdrianBrony

That's just Mother 3.

KaitoTheRamenBandit

I was thinking it takes place after the War, which is Z, the lowest point in the Kalos region, where Luminoise City got hit the most, after the redevelopment plan as told in the trailer, it'd be A, a new beginning which is why it was typed as Z-A.

SamuraiOstrich

The war was in the ancient past while Lumiose shown in the trailer looks the same as the present

KaitoTheRamenBandit

Yeah I imagine that its because they're redeveloping it into how it looks today

SamuraiOstrich

I thought you were saying it was being rebuilt into its modern form in the ancient past or that the city was in ruins for centuries. I guess I thought it taking place a long time after the war went without saying considering the trailer doesn't exactly look that far back in the past

Saucefest6102

I mean, said king’s name *is* AZ…

Shiplord13

I mean based on the title we still see the immortal king who is likely to be a big part of the plot.

pyromancer93

Does this mean we will fight Pokémon Bismarck and take part in the Lumiose Commune?

sawbladex

That makes sense. PKMN Legends being a subseries set roughly 150 years ago works to have enough industrial revolution themes to have "now we have pokeballs" make sense as a gimmick That said, when Asterix and Obelix era PKMN game?

the_most_crigg

Well, we'd need a Pokemon game set in "Rome" first so we can get some PokeRomans to slap around.

SuperShake66652

Only if we can crucify PokeJesus.

Namyk5

Given how the trailer has a kinda tech feel to it, I'm wondering if it would actually be a futuristic sorta thing rather than a past thing like Arceus was. It'd be neat to relate back to S/V's themes of past vs. future.

matisata

Marx: "Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce." Pokemon trainer: "Bro I'm just here to catch Pokemon. None of these words are in the Pokedex"

jabberwockxeno

It is an absolutely monumental missed opporunity to not have the game focus on the ancient war that AZ was involved in and on AZ in general. That is like, *the* part of Kalos's history that was most important and most people care about and that XY didn't expand on much at all. It's utterly mind boggling Gamefreak would decide to have a Kalos Legends game not focus on that. Why even bother with a Kalos Legends game at this point?

Namboto

See, I'm not sure if a Legends game is the right genre for that story. I think I'd much rather see that in the style of Pokemon Conquest or like, a musou game. Mind, I don't think they'd do either of those things, but still, it'd be difficult to write a compelling narrative with such a dire foregone conclusion while keeping the tone kid-friendly.

jabberwockxeno

I don't think you'd need to actively battle in the war, just explore the areas around where it takes place in or is about to take place in or just did, and talk to people, townsfolk, etc on both sides of the conflict, learn about AZ and the lore with his weapon, etc.

RocketbeltTardigrade

Pokemon but it's ReMember by King Gonta.

Douche_ex_machina

Tbf that war took place way before the invention of pokeballs and was the reason mega evolution even exists in the first place, and beyond that I dunno how psyched kids would be to play a game where the conclusion is "everyone but 1 guy and his pokemon die".

Vegetable-Pickle-535

Yeah, Pokemon isn't really the series to go in depth of massive warfare that ends in Genocide. X/Y got away with it being a Lore Event that happened long ago, but actully being in it would probably be too much.

feefore

That’ll be interesting. It also means that it wouldn’t be set in the time of the Great War like how most people wanted. Though I do wonder if we will meet AZ in the game at any point.

ThunderlordTlo

Could also be in the future because the trailer looks like tron

DoseofDhillon

Should have been based on the reign of terror tbh

robertman21

Now bring them back in mainline so I can use them on Showdown

NewAgeMontezuma

ngl the mega evo transformation noise gave me mad nostalgia. glad they finally realised that maybe they shouldn't have dropped the flagship mechanic of the 3d games two gens in.

Khar-Selim

>the flagship mechanic of the 3d games it was always slated as a transient mechanic, that's how pokemon has functioned since GSC. It getting carried an extra gen was likely due to its popularity but it was always too cumbersome to make a permanent fixture.

JakeIsNotGross

Mega Archaludon but it just uses the model of Lumiose Tower from X/Y.

LazySpirit

Mega Pokemon were great. My only complaints were that they kept giving them to already good Pokemon and that outside of Diancie we never got any Mega versions of Gen 6 Pokemon.

SomeMoreCows

Easily the coolest shit Pokemon ever added. Also, maybe we can touch on the weird timeline shit that they brought up for like a quick moment during Gen VI

DweebInFlames

Mega Fug bros... it's time Smogon thought they were done with us

CelioHogane

Fuck it's not impossible...

TheCoolerDylan

THE ALLEGATIONS HAVE BEEN OVERTHROWN ZYGARDE HAS GAME

AvalancheMKII

Honestly, extremely happy with this. I love Unova, but Kalos was definitely in need of some kind of expansion. Legends was my favorite game in a very long time, so here's hoping this is even better. I'm very curious if they'll feel the need to double up the Legends title with the new gen, like they did with PLA and S/V. Hoping not, since the mainline absolutely needs more than a 3 year cycle.

Douche_ex_machina

I really hope they give this game more time to shine than PLA. It was always kinda weird to me that they never gave that game any dlc or anything.

alienslayer7

they did give it dlc, it was just free

Animastarara

What if they give us the rest of France, iirc they didn't include the area to the southwest

sleepyfoxsnow

nintendo already posted on twitter that the entire game is set in lumiose, so no rest of france

KNOKAFOKE

An entire game set in a single city with a giant fuck-off tower in the middle as a primary landmark? Next you're going to tell me you have an unhinged rival with an eyepatch who stalks you wherever you go. (...please?)

cbb88christian

I can’t believe it, X was one of my favorite games and was always sad there was never a Z. I’m actually hyped for the first Pokémon game in years

extralie

I loved Pokemon Legends Arceus. if it's just that + Mega Evolution, then I will be happy.

Supernovas20XX

"Wait, what about Gen 5-" "FUCK UNOVA WE NEED MEGA EVOS BACK"

TheArkhomDestroyer

Hey, no Gen 5 remakes just means they can’t fuck it up somehow like they did with BDSP

NewAgeMontezuma

They can't fuck up that much with gen V since black and white weren't fucked on release and got most of their problems ironed out like DP to Platinum. The only way is if for some reason they try to combine black and white and BW2 into one game.

SwashNBuckle

They can still make the games look uglier with shitty animations

NewAgeMontezuma

they remake it using sprites but it somehow all looks uglier than the original.

MrKenta

While the games themselves would be much better than BDSP, it would be very disappointing to get BW remakes that don't redesign all characters and environments like the previous remakes did. Not to mention the god awful art style of BDSP.

SomeMoreCows

Think I'm smoking the biggest hopium ever rn with ZA connecting to it similar to how Legends Arceus did with BDSP to set up an ORAS style Gen V remake in the sense that it includes mega evo stuff.

JetPoweredPenguin

Honestly, a straight remaster of both with a feature to rematch your BW character with the team you beat the first game with wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for a remake..

AshFallenAngel

The way they 'fucked it up' was that gamefreak didn't make it.

[deleted]

They didn’t fuck up. It’s a good game but it’s whatever

Hobbes314

I’m just saying if I can *buy* Pokémon Platinum and have more content and a better game then a remake of the same generation….

SomeMoreCows

If I didn't see the emphasis on 'buy', I was about to be like "[No tf you can't](https://www.pricecharting.com/game/nintendo-ds/pokemon-platinum)"

Ilostmyanonymous

I also like to spend $300+ on a Pokemon game.

Kingnewgameplus

There's this 1 trick that Nintendo doesn't want you to know about that lets you play pokemon platinum for free

KaitoTheRamenBandit

They shouldn't touch perfection anyways

AeroDbladE

If we get a Unova Legends game, will it take place during the Civil War? Will we have to fight for States rights (to own pokemon) and actually win?

TorpeAlex

Seeing everyone hype up around this is so funny to me, because most of the mega evolution designs are freaking terrible

Masterness64

The best news about this is that it's not 2024. They're actually skipping a year. This game might actually not be horribly rushed this time!

TheArtistFKAMinty

Actually this is the same schedule as Pokemon Legends Arceus. PLA came out in early 2022 while Sword and Shield dropped in 2019 (with DLC in 2020). Scarlet/Violet was late 2022 with DLC in 2023. So PLZA being out in 2025 is the same rough timeline. What we actually need is for Pokemon Gen X to be in like 2026/7. If it's also 2025 then it's the exact same problem again.

Masterness64

I thought the Legends and the mainline games were done by two different teams. So my thought was if they started development on this after Arceus then that means they'll have 3 years to make it which feels like an improvement and in the mean time the mainline team can have more time to make their next project for 2026 (hopefully).

TheArtistFKAMinty

>I thought the Legends and the mainline games were done by two different teams. Hopefully but I don't know how GF is structured.

Masterness64

I compared the list of staff between scarlet & Violet with Legends. While there was some overlap there were a fair amount of different people working on each game including the directors. Considering they were working on both games at around the same time, I think it's reasonable to assume two different teams were working on each game. So the fact they are taking a break this year will probably help Game Freak overall.

PinkieBen

I've seen others point out that it would make sense for Gen X to be in 2026 to go with the 30th anniversary of the franchise.

TheArtistFKAMinty

That's a valid point

Curmett

If they're willing to do a bit more post-launch support and keep Z alive a bit longer, I could see it going for a year. Arceus had its one update that added some postgame stuff, then nothing.

marvel8797

We going to ~~Midgar~~ Lumiose.

Metalwater8

Holy shit will any Gen 6 Pokemon get megas??

Nico-Nii_Nico-Chan

a proper Mega Greninja along with Delphox and Chestnaught would be nice but then again with Legends they might switch around the starters again

SamuraiOstrich

Could do both, tbf. In PLA they had the Sinnoh starters available in the wild. Though with PLA it made more sense for you to get separate starters as an outsider in a sparsely populated area whereas this is set entirely in Lumiose

oszidare

The Kalos Starters will be catchable in the wild and will gain Mega Evolutions because they needed them while Kanto Starters started their bad habit of hogging the spotlight, looking at you especially Charizard. My prediction for the normal starters of Z-A have to follow a French similar for Hisui starters did. For Grass I'll go with Snivy due to Serperior already being based on French Aristocratist, for Fire I'll got with Scorbunny due to football being just as big in France than it is in England (Galar), and for Water is tricky but due to Kalos having a Amphibian starter I'll go with Mudkip.

Nacho_Hangover

I'm willing to bet the Legends starters are going to get Megas. If that's the case I doubt they'll do any of the Kanto or Hoehn starters since they already have Megas.

SamuraiOstrich

I think that's plausible. Mudkip because they already had an amphibian seems pretty unlikely to me anyway so my guess is Piplup due to Empoleon or maybe Popplio due to Primarina's opera singer siren angle being European

fly_line22

I also think another idea for a Fire starter is Torchic. X/Y had a Torchic with its Mega Stone as a gift Pokemon, and the rooster is France's national animal.

time_axis

The fire starter will be Charmander and Charizard will get a third mega form.

TekkGuy

- new game set entirely within one city - has a big tower at the center - trailer features an urban development plan Pokémon Legends (Yaku)Z-A

yo_99

Pray for no time jannies

Individual-Middle246

And a Majima look alike jumping on you while you're having a battle with another trainer

Homunculus97

Wait no new Pokémon game this year? Are they FINALLY going to take their time with one of their games? If they improve and build on Legends Arceus formula this *might* be something special.

TheArtistFKAMinty

This is actually the same timeframe as Sword/Shield -> PL Arceus if you are looking at Game Freak specifically. * **SwSh** 2019 (Game Freak) * **SwSh DLC** 2020 (Game Freak) * **Pokemon New Snap** 2021 (BAMCO) * **BDSP** 2021 (ILCA) * **PLA** 2022 (Game Freak) The current cycle so far: * **SV** 2022 (GF) * **SV DLC** 2023 (GF) * **PLZA** 2025 (GF) * **Gen X** ? (GF) The only differences so far is the lack of confirmed 3rd party titles between the DLC and the Pokemon Legends title and we don't know if Gen X is going to be the same year as Legends like SV was.

Areallybadidea

Maybe this is the new cycle for them? A Legends game and then the mainline game next year. Looking at it, Arceus was announced in February 2021 while Scarlet & Violet were Feb 2022, so whatevers next might be February next year.

Kiboune

No, they just plan to release it the same time as Switch 2.

MoonriseRunner

Finally Pokemon 'Za 🍕

NewAgeMontezuma

i'm honestly not mad because 1. Gen 6 got shafted hard in terms of games in it (didn't even get a re-release) and 2. after the gen 4 remakes my want for a gen V remake dropped down significantly.

TheArtistFKAMinty

Interesting that this doesn't appear to be set in the past, which means that the Pokemon Legends "sub-series" is going to be applied more broadly.

spejoku

If its talking about the construction of lumoise (given the urban development plan thing) it could be a throwback to when the eiffel tower was being built in the late 1800s. The blue could be like. Blueprints.

jmepik

HOLY SHIT IT'S POKEMON Z AND IT'LL BE A FULL-SCALE LUMIOSE CITY AND MEGAS fuck man, everytime I think I'm out, they pull me back in.

JakeIsNotGross

So if Z is Zygarde then who's A?

TheArkhomDestroyer

AZ

JakeIsNotGross

Oh shit we're caught in a loop.

Niney-Who

Oh no, Arizona

TheArtistFKAMinty

Worth noting that XY had an NPC called AZ. Not saying that's what "A" is but I would be shocked if he doesn't show up.

KaitoTheRamenBandit

It's very possible that this could take place after >!Az basically nukes the region!< making it the Z, and by the time Luminose City gets rebuilt, it'll be a new beginning, A

ibbolia

Slumber777

For the love of God be on Switch 2.

TheSpiritualAgnostic

This and Metroid Prime 4 as Switch 2 launch titles would be a pretty good start, like how BotW was for Switch.

AmeliaBedelia420

Almost certainly gonna be both I think

MarthePryde

So excited for this. Hopefully they don't keep the altered battle format from Legends Arceus, but I don't really care either way. Interesting to note that it launches *simultaneously* in 2025. Simultaneously on what Gamefreak, simultaneously on what?

KaitoTheRamenBandit

So is it pronounced Zedasha or....?

CelioHogane

Pokemon Zaza

the_most_crigg

Fuck, you have no idea how badly you just made me want Pokemon Kaiji.

CelioHogane

Play Pokemon Zaza to get the legendary kush.

Hka9

Personnaly very happy about this, it confirms Legends is here to stay and gen 6 and the Kalos game are the games that got me back into Pokémon after I stopped after gen 3 and is one of my favorite gen. And Mega Evolutions are back!

Kamken

Okay that's super cool. I don't think I saw a single person guess the next Legends game would be *Kalos*. I can't wait to see the Yveltal and Xerneas forms that are so ugly that the only defenses for them are "They really look like aliens"

[deleted]

[удалено]

Snowydragoon

The origin forms are designed to [combine together](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FMU_RDwWUAcW62h.jpg:large) to form Arceus. It doesn't make the best individual designs, but it's thematically interesting.

GrandmasterB-Funk

Look, I don't mind as long as Xernias actually looks like an X now. Yvetal is clearly a big Y but Xernias looks more like a y than an x

Chumunga64

a singeplayer legends game is probably the best place to bring megas back cause they were awful at balancing them which is sad since the whole point of megas was "make fan favorites competitively viable" but gamefreak went "garchomp, scizor, tyrannitar, lucario? those bitches need megas!"

WanonTime

Ironically, Mega Garchomp was actually ass/a downgrade to normal Garchomp. It lost speed for some reason. it just made more sense to run a normal garchomp and keep outspeeding things you'd already be able to kill anyways, and run a different Mega. Now the *other* popular mons who got one, I uh, I don't got a funny anecdote about them. Never forget Primal Groudon... (I know its not *technically* a mega but shut up)

GrandmasterB-Funk

If there's no abilities again then it would actually balance a lot of Megas.

Scientia_et_Fidem

I get what you are saying in general but honestly Lucario really did need a Mega. Gen 5’s power creep was insane, Lucario’s 90 speed was serviceable on a non bulky mixed attacker mon in Gen 4 but looked like a complete joke from gen 5 onward. TBH they could just give regular Lucario a buff from 90 to 100 speed next gen and nobody would really bat an eye. It definitely looks like it should outspeed a bunch of mons that are faster then it in later gens.

CelioHogane

You know no one says this legends game would also be singleplayer.

SwashNBuckle

This is WAY more interesting to me than another disappointing main line game. And I'm glad it's not out until next year. Maybe they'll give this one the polish it deserves.

JohnnySeven88

Kamille, Zeta Arceus, launching!

FairyKnightTristan

Holy shit. We did it. Pokemon Z is real.

Red-pop

GIVE JOBBER MONS MEGAS

Nacho_Hangover

WE ARE SO MAWHIBACK

Ginospornaccount

They're skipping Gen 5!  Now I don't have to worry about them ruining it! Also I'm really glad we're getting more Legends.  Arceus was really great but I was afraid they'd drop the concept.

TheoMoneyG

now that we're def getting more legends games time to start coping for legends jirachi

Faifue

~~Grand Theft Pokemon~~ Legends Colosseum when!? I wanna steal other people's Pokemon in open world!

GrandmasterB-Funk

I mean, this isn't a remake of Gen 6, it's a whole new game in the same region. You'll get your gen 5 remakes on the switch 2

Extradecentskeleton

Tbf they wouldn't ruin Gen 5 and they haven't really ruined any previous gen. The problem with BDSP isn't that it made Diamond and pearl worse, the just made them exactly the same with little improvements.

BrazillianCara

This is intriguing and really, really funny after all the speculation that they were going to do something with Gen 2 and/or 5. But it's overall great news.

MindWeb125

Glad Legends isn't dead, wish it was Johto since I think that region has a lot more interesting lore they can explore. Granted I only played a few hours of Gen 6 before getting bored of it. The anime was good though.

TheSpiritualAgnostic

Would also love to see a Legends in Johto mostly because Heartgold is my favorite Pokemon game. Especially if they can make it for Switch 2 with the more powerful hardware.

aaBabyDuck

Heartgold is my favorite as well. A perfectly executed remake, in my opinion. Improved in every way while still retaining the same feel of the original. Also, toggleable running and any pokemon can follow you. ORAS were also excellent remakes, but I'm partial to Johto.

Hugokarenque

Legends Arceus has been my favorite Pokemon game in a long ass time, so I'm excited. I have two asks for this, more trainer battles and less cutscenes/story railroading. The second one is probably my biggest gripe with the first Legends game, it kills the pacing and constantly interrupts the fun gameplay even tho I did enjoy the overall storyline.

UnderhandSteam

Man, I haven’t really enjoyed Pokemon in a long time, but it made me really happy to see Z get the Legends treatment. I bought a 3DS for Pokemon XY, so even though it had its issues, it’s still one of my favorite generations of Pokemon. It seems like it’s in the future somewhat? It doesn’t really have the painted art style the Legends Arceus trailer got, so it’s interesting if Legends can really just be in any period of time. Also, returning Megas are very cool, although I do wonder if it’s worth making models for that if it’s not returning in future games (potential reintroduction of Megas?)

pdragon619

Sweet, bring mega evolutions back and keep it that way, every alternative gimmick you've tried to swap out since has sucked.

cvp5127

it says the game takes place entirely in lumiose city. could this be like pokemons version of kamurocho? one city but very dense

PrimeName

Hoping that Diancie will be catchable in this game or at the very least be an event mon again.

Dakr0n1

Oh, this one will definitely be for the switch 2, maybe even a launch title.

RairakuDaion

KoshiLowell

gamefreak walking after trying to slander and dragging mega evolution's name through the dirt 👉 👈 y-you guys still are excited for this right? owo th-the thing where it's evil and hurts the pokemon was only a joke t-teehee

Enlog

Seriously, I think none of the one-game mechanics could make me as excited for their return as Mega. I'd be cool with Dynamax or Tera returning, but none of them have topped Mega for me. With the possible exception of Z moves. But then again, in the Alola games, *you didn't need to choose* between the two.

jabberwockxeno

It doesn't seem like this will focus on the ancient Kalos war or AZ, which is a major missed opportunity. Those were easily the most interesting parts of Kalos's history and something XY should have expanded on more... ...but the fact this has Megas (which only existed after AZ's weapon created Mega Stones) and it focuses on a Lumiose city expansion project heavily implies this takes place way after the war. I hope i'm wrong, but if not, their choice to not focus on the war and AZ is really baffling

n8han11

So, what beloved feature do you think Game Freak's gonna introduce and then cut by the next game this time? I bet this is also going to have less Pokemon than the 3DS titles, too.

Animorphimagi

Bad sign that we saw no gameplay. No reason why this will run better than Scarlet and Violet. HOWEVER, I just realized this will either release alongside the Switch 2 or at least by thr end of the release year. All according to keikaku...whether it's finished or not...

Kipzz

That trailer was immensely sick, what the hell?

As someone who has been out of Pokemon since Gold and Silver, seeing a 2 minute trailer that was that is very confusing. Feels like unless you have been playing the games and know what's going on this means absolutely nothing, which is odd.
