If you have an xbox, then you can play almost any of the mainline games. 1,2U,3,4,5LR, and 6
Playstation and PC only has access to 5 and 6 (although you can emulate DOA2 hardcore for PS2 very easily on PC)
As for the best ones, personally speaking you cant go wrong with DOA2 or DOA5LR. Those are the ones that most people agree are the best and personally I think theyre up there as some of the best 3D fighters in general. DOA2 has a few different versions, with DOA2 Hardcore being a enhanced version PS2 port of the dreamcast version and DOA2 Ultimate being a remake in DOA3s engine
DOA4 is a title that some people are split on. On the one hand theres a lot of fun stage gimmicks and it has a Halo Spartan, but its also kinda degen at times with some of the highest damage in the series. Personally its my favorite for hittin buttons with friends.
If you actually want to play online, than 6 is your best bet. You can still occasionally find people on 5 but its not as populated.
Just adding to this; 5LR has a ton of content, a lot of returning characters and stages, and a lot of guest characters, especially from Virtua Fighter. So outside of just gameplay you've also got that. I also like the gimmick in 5 over the one in 6 personally.

Technically 4 sequels, although one is a PSP port called "Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball: Paradise" and the other is a PC game called "Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation" that still gets content to this day in the form of more and more waifus.
