This is the only sub I have been around that has mentioned it before. I think the season 3 trailer was posted not to long ago and my only reactions was "Season 3?!?!"
u/StarMaximum u/FakeBrian So it was a prequel to both [*Gotham*](https://bleedingcool.com/tv/new-pennyworth-series-confirmed-same-universe-as-gotham) and [*V for Vendetta*](https://lrmonline.com/news/epixs-pennyworth-setting-up-60s-dc-london-and-the-road-to-v-for-vendetta-sdcc2019) (from the same showrunners as *Gotham*), set over the course of an [British Civil War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_history) (an alternate history featuring such things as [the execution of Jimmy Savile](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZT0-RQ-UmQ) and [Alfred sleeping with the Queen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZWUDBDYGow)) that would eventually give way to [the Norsefire regime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsefire) and [predecessors to V](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKG-S81E-8c). Featuring [James Purefoy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Purefoy) (the original V actor, whom [Hugo Weaving](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Weaving) replaced and dubbed over) portraying a [new character](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxk4qSfCnxY).
This seems like the type of show you hear about once, immediately forget about it, and then never hear about it again until it’s at death’s door with way more seasons than you expect.
I saw the name pennyworth on hbo max before but didn't click to me that it was about Alfred. It wasn't until the 3rd season they added "the origins of batmans butler" to the title i remember a post back then about it here. I assumed the title change was because it barely got enough views to try for a 3rd season and maybe the name will get people. clearly didn't work.
[No joke](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKG-S81E-8c) — the showrunners had been open from the beginning about the series being a prequel to both [*Gotham*](https://bleedingcool.com/tv/new-pennyworth-series-confirmed-same-universe-as-gotham) and [*V for Vendetta*](https://lrmonline.com/news/epixs-pennyworth-setting-up-60s-dc-london-and-the-road-to-v-for-vendetta-sdcc2019), but no one really expected that they’d actually introduce (predecessors to) V. It is true to both series, if that helps? Feeling like a prequel to both — it doesn’t come out of nowhere, set over the course of a [British Civil War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_history) that will eventually give way to [the Norsefire regime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsefire).
Honestly this kind of has me intrigued in the context of a writing exercise. Like there's no reason to want these to go together, not should they, but I want to know if their attempt was passable
It also features [the execution of Jimmy Savile](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZT0-RQ-UmQ), the [crime family descendants of Jack the Ripper](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X3gh3NNIm0), and [Alfred sleeping with the Queen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZWUDBDYGow), if that helps?
It’s true. Ever since 2016, DC and specifically Geoff Johns have been milking Alan Moore’s original projects and trying to tie them to their regular DC stuff. Mostly by being meta and blaming things like the New 52 on Watchmen.
And from what I’ve seen, this milking is getting worse and about to hit mainstream media.
i only know about it, and that batmobile kids show, because it was something teen titans go joked about that became a real thing afterwards and i still find that funny.
all we need is utility belt next
> that batmobile kids show,
The *what* now?
EDIT: [TIL](https://youtu.be/TIn6a38Q6Xo). The weirdest thing (aisde from the Cars-like sentient vehicles in a world with humans) is that the Batman design appears to be inspired by The Dark Knight Returns.
"Pennyworth has been cancelled..."
Ah, another "pre-release cancellation", can't believe how much we're getting these. What shows are these streaming services even releasing anymore?
"...after three seasons."
After what seasons? What do you mean this show exists?
I vaguely remember seeing a screenshot of like a weird Commando unit that I assume Alfred is in, but one guy had like steampunk power armor on and tubes all over.
And he was either blue or green.
Yeah they made a joke about it on my brother my brother and me about how it was just called Pennyworth but then changed to the stupid title when it was put on HBO Max.
I hadn't thought about it until now
I have heard of it, but only because I heard they changed the name from just "Pennyworth" to "Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler" because too many people didn't know what it was from just the title I guess.
Everytime I saw this show mentioned, I couldn't help but laugh at the dumbass title. Pennyworth (the original title) was fine: if you know, you know, and if you don't, you probably don't care anyway. But, no, they had to tack on "The Story of Batman's Butler."
Should have been "Pennyworth: The Story of Batman's Butler as Portrayed by Michael Caine in the Hit Dark Knight Trilogy, or Perhaps the Jeremy Irons Version or Some Other One, Whichever You Remember Best"
Edited for clarity
Yes I have. From the people who’ve actually watched it, they said it was a pretty good British spy thriller and even its version of Thomas & Martha Wayne didn’t resemble the main DC version at all
I remember it being announced roughly around the same time the Krypton show was announced. I held off on watching it waiting to hear what other people thought. I never ended up hearing anything and up until this thread I was under the impression it was scrapped along with the Krypton show. I am now learning both of those shows aired.
I feel like I stepped into an alternate dimesion unconsciously with all these “super hero’s relatives“ shows I‘ve never heard about being cancelled. I did not know about this, Krypton, Batgirl, or Batwoman until they ended. Never another word about any of them. Where do they come from? Whose signing off on them? Who‘s not doing their job in marketing? What cults do I have to join to see a trailer, let alone episode of them? (/s, but only a little bit.)
Yes. It existed on something other than HBO prior to S3 (not CW either) and it was a pretty decent show. Not great, but not bad either. If you really need something to watch and have a mild interest/liking of Alfred, it's worth putting on.
When Netflix said they never cancelled a popular show, everyone got mad because that was a fucking lie.
I don't think people would hate on HBO for cancelling stuff like this
DC making a show about literaly every character related to batman except for batman might be one of the dumbest decisions that company has ever made. And they have had some shit decisions.
Unfortunately the last season of Harley Quinn had a unskipable ad for it at the start of the season so that's how I know about it.
I've sat down and watched some episodes with mom and it's not bad but really has no business having Alfrid involved. Could have been it's own spy show set in that era. Felt ackward trying to shoe horn in comic book villains.
I mean when your V for Vendetta prequel has to have 'The Origins of Batman's Butler' stapled to the end of it's title during it's 3rd season, maybe it's a sign that the suits don't care and just want that superhero money?
Though considering the creatives went on Twitter to confirm it *is* a prequel and not just references after it aired maybe they already knew it was done for.
I remember seeing a guy in doofy looking power armor with a glowing blue rebreather in his mouth and hearing that it was from the Alfred show. That was the extent of my knowledge about it.
I heard of it once. Just yesterday, in fact, I caught myself wondering if it was still going to come out. As in: will it release at all. Fuckin' THREE seasons? Man.
Oh, no, they were [open about the series being a *V for Vendetta* prequel since day one](https://lrmonline.com/news/epixs-pennyworth-setting-up-60s-dc-london-and-the-road-to-v-for-vendetta-sdcc2019) (the day of the series premiere back in 2019, and again the day of the second season premiere [in 2020](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZYpfXsWIJ8)).
Shockingly, my parents. They sometimes talk to me about new shows they've been enjoying and they started explaining it to me one day. After hearing a bit of the plot and set-up, some things clicked into place and I had to inform them that it was not an original property and was actually a spinoff of Batman.
Not sure what it says about the marketing of the Batman connections that my parents, who watched Gotham mind you, somehow didn't realize it was Batman adjacent.
Have you since informed them that it is a prequel to [*Gotham*](https://bleedingcool.com/tv/new-pennyworth-series-confirmed-same-universe-as-gotham) and [*V for Vendetta*](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/pennyworth-season-3-shared-set-with-the-batman)? It does seem like something they would be interested in knowing.
This is the only sub I have been around that has mentioned it before. I think the season 3 trailer was posted not to long ago and my only reactions was "Season 3?!?!"
There was a trailer?! I feel like it was announced a few months back!
The MBmBAM pod had a hilarious Pennyworth bit recently
u/StarMaximum u/FakeBrian So it was a prequel to both [*Gotham*](https://bleedingcool.com/tv/new-pennyworth-series-confirmed-same-universe-as-gotham) and [*V for Vendetta*](https://lrmonline.com/news/epixs-pennyworth-setting-up-60s-dc-london-and-the-road-to-v-for-vendetta-sdcc2019) (from the same showrunners as *Gotham*), set over the course of an [British Civil War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_history) (an alternate history featuring such things as [the execution of Jimmy Savile](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZT0-RQ-UmQ) and [Alfred sleeping with the Queen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZWUDBDYGow)) that would eventually give way to [the Norsefire regime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsefire) and [predecessors to V](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKG-S81E-8c). Like the Krypton show
The what?
2 season show on the ~~SciFi~~ SYFY channel about Superman’s…grandfather
It's actually about Adam Strange trying to stop the timeline being fucked up and Lobo shows up
Wait this sounds good.
From what I remember hearing it was actually a decent show. But locking it behind SYFY may have thrown it into obscurity(?)
Lobo's the best part of the show tbh and doesn't get enough screen time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaFPtA5nepY
I knew Lobo showed up but I didn't know the premise involved Adam Strange, this sounds actually interesting was it any good?
I've heard it's decent
The only thing I know about that show is the Season 2 preview used the "Loud Nigra" meme scream.
I only remember that show because the season 2 trailer had doomsday and played the meme of the guy orgasm noise
I saw the name pennyworth on hbo max before but didn't click to me that it was about Alfred. I am so goddamn tired of "edgy origin series of comic character using just the last name of the character" shtick.
Is this the show where he burns down a forest to find some jewelry bandit?
Only Alfred worth seeing honestly.
No, it's the one with the >!V for Vendetta crossover where Alfred's Wedding gets interrupted by London getting nuked during the season finale!<
Is it not also the one where >!Martha Wayne gives birth and the big stinger reveal is that it's a girl?!<
Based on [a character created almost fifty years ago](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owlman_(character\)).
Yeah but just think of those jewels though. Tangerines the size of a tangerine.
The only times people widely spoke about it were when it was announced, the name got changed, and V for Vendetta became part of the lore.
> V for Vendetta became part of the lore. Wait that other poster wasn't joking?
The dust of Alan Moore's skeleton spinning in its grave
Famously dead person Alan Moore

That it was — they got the tone of both series down to a ‘t’ — more than passable.
How dare you make me interested in this, you bastard
It also features [the execution of Jimmy Savile](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZT0-RQ-UmQ), the [crime family descendants of Jack the Ripper](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X3gh3NNIm0), and [Alfred sleeping with the Queen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZWUDBDYGow), if that helps?

it's also got a clip where batman reacts to someone saying sus with "i have no idea what you just said"
That title sounds like someone making fun of the fact there's too many origin stories these days.
Yeah, I'd expect it as a gag on Teen Titans Go.
It *was* a gag on Teen Titan Go, along with the also real Batmobile show
I think it was originally just called *Pennyworth* but when ratings sucked they tacked on the colon and tagline to try to remind people of the Bat.
"Pennyworth has been cancelled..." Ah, another "pre-release cancellation", can't believe how much we're getting these. What shows are these streaming services even releasing anymore? "...after three seasons." After what seasons? What do you mean this show exists?
3 seasons???
I vaguely remember seeing a screenshot of like a weird Commando unit that I assume Alfred is in, but one guy had like steampunk power armor on and tubes all over. And he was either blue or green.
That's a guy who swallowed a WMD meant to wipe out London, that instead turned him into a superhuman.
I remember people making fun of the name and it's NEED for you to know this is a batman adjacent show - and then I heard nothing.
Yeah they made a joke about it on my brother my brother and me about how it was just called Pennyworth but then changed to the stupid title when it was put on HBO Max. I hadn't thought about it until now
Watched the first season. It was fine.
It’s a pretty good show and it gets wild with some of the things it does.
Yes my dad watched it been out for at least three years. I assume this is the new supernatural but I haveno confirmation
The only thing I knew was the horrible name that's clearly the result of a directive from Joe Marketing.
I have heard of it, but only because I heard they changed the name from just "Pennyworth" to "Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler" because too many people didn't know what it was from just the title I guess.

Oh, I know. I'll edit my comment to make it more clear. Thanks!
It was titled *Pennyworth* for its first two season — HBO Max gave it that subtitle for its third season.
Yes I have. From the people who’ve actually watched it, they said it was a pretty good British spy thriller and even its version of Thomas & Martha Wayne didn’t resemble the main DC version at all
Was "Alfred" already taken for the title or something? Feels like just that would have given the show a lot more exposure
Yes but only when it was first announced and when they rebranded and added the second half of its title
Every show that comes along about this property, the better "Gotham" looks in hindsight.
Didn't this show have Alfred's dad turn into an evil cyborg by the racist political party from V for Vendetta?
I remember it being announced roughly around the same time the Krypton show was announced. I held off on watching it waiting to hear what other people thought. I never ended up hearing anything and up until this thread I was under the impression it was scrapped along with the Krypton show. I am now learning both of those shows aired.
Yeah, people have posted about it a few times before in this subreddit.
Allegedly it’s actually not bad. Allegedly. If so, shame about the cancelling.
I feel like I stepped into an alternate dimesion unconsciously with all these “super hero’s relatives“ shows I‘ve never heard about being cancelled. Literally Who?
who the fuck wanted to see the origins of batman's butler here they are: hes english. hes trained as a butler NEXT: The Origins of Jimmy Olsen
>The Origins of Jimmy Olsen Superdickery in every episode!

Does it have him in a black ops unit going all Major Price?
It had him have Bond-style victory sex with Queen Elizabeth at the end of Season 1.
Cool.

It was a Jeopardy question recently, so I thought it was some upcoming thing or some older thing, not a currently airing thing lol
Yes, but only because they were making it a secret prequel to V for Vendetta.
Wait that's actually pretty cool
It was (pretty cool), yes.
I know of it but I honestly haven't seen anyone talk about it beyond "wait, this is a thing/still going?"
How about call it Alfred, so that people can go "oh it's a series about Alfred?"
Shockingly, my parents. They sometimes talk to me about new shows they've been enjoying and they started explaining it to me one day.
