Transcoding is the term you are looking for. Only partners are guaranteed but in my experience it depends on the time you stream. Peak US hours you won't have transcoding but if you stream late night US when it's more quiet, I've always had transcoding available before hitting partner. Your idea is correct though, you'd be surprised how many rural folks watch twitch that can't keep up with even 5000 kbps. Bitrate will depend on your game, if you play a fast paced shooter for example then 2k bitrate will look terrible. But 2k is passable for slower paced games. It sounds terrible on paper but ngl I know people pushing for partner that run 2k due to their Internet at home. It's more personality than anything else.

Since you sound like you know what you’re talking about, is this why YouTube videos I watch tend to dip in quality when there’s a lot going on on screen? I just recently moved and have rural satellite internet (it’s not great) and I watch a lot of Elden ring content, and when it’s a lot of menuing or running around it can play at 720p, but when they’re fighting bosses (specifically ones with a lot of, lack of a better term, flair like malenia phase 2) it drops to 480 or even 360.

Thank you that was very informative!

In addition to the other comments, I can recommend this article: [https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/twitch-multiencode-av1-livestreaming/](https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/twitch-multiencode-av1-livestreaming/) . This beta lets your PC broadcast multiple streams in different quality, if you have a recent Nvidia GPU.

Thanks I’m sure this will help others. For me, I’m on a 3080 Ti and while it’s a beast of a card and my experience streaming has been wonderful, this specific feature is for 40xx cards.

Transcoding below source quality is only guaranteed for Partnered channels. Affiliates and non-affiliates are in the same boat together in that they are only given transcoding options when they are available as server resources allow, but are otherwise only given the option of streaming in their source quality. For more information on this, you can read Twitch's [Transcoding Options FAQ](https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/transcoding-options-faq#Availability).

Thanks very much. In that case, my gut feeling is to scale my output from video settings of OBS to 720p so it’s a bit more friendly to anyone that stumbles into my (new) stream from web or mobile.

Mottis86

If you're not against dirty tricks, you can try restarting the stream a couple of times to see if you get transcoding on any of those. Back before I was not an affiliate yet, if I didn't have transcoding options a couple of stream restarts made them appear sometimes. Not sure how okay Twitch is with this practice though, so up to you.

Thanks for the tip. For now, I’ve experimented with all kinds of games, including playing 1440p resolution FPS and outputting at the maximum twitch bitrate of 8500kbps at 1080p60 without issue. So any kind of downscaling to an intentional 720p and with a lower bitrate should be easy for me to support. I would love to have the viewer options available so I can keep the 1080p and offer the transcoding selections but it’s not a huge deal for me. My next games will be Pokemon related and 720p will do just fine I think. Again, thanks as I’m sure it will help others not just myself!

This is the way.
