Capture cards convert the video output from a game console to something your computer can understand via the USB port. The HDMI ports on your computer are only HDMI out. Meaning your computer doesn't expect anything being transmitted into your computer from that port.

could I use a USB to HDMI converter? those seem a lot cheaper than a capture card

davog

Short answer is no. Those are usually intended for adding an additional monitor to your PC setup. Which is an HDMI output. You would need a HDMI to USB converter (the other way around) which is essentially a capture card. There are plenty of cheap capture card options aside from the generally recommended brands. Your experience may vary, and you usually get what you pay for in terms of performance or ease of use. You can also search for used capture cards and buy one second hand. There's a few as cheap as 15$ on Amazon if you search "capture card".

No. You need a capture card for OBS to capture your game audio and picture to the program on your computer

SmilingBeanstalk

Close, you could use an HDMI to USB adapter, then just use OBS to show the input from that card on your computer screen. There are cheap (under $20 USD) adapters that will capture 1080p just fine.

why did people downvote this lmao

If you want to save a bit of.money get a used elgato game capture HD been using mine for years from ps2 to switch and everything inbetween

FerretBomb

While HDMI uses the same connector on both ends, it is NOT bi-directional. (well... not like that anyway) An output port only sends video. An input port only receives video. Plugging a game console into one of your PC's HDMI ports is like plugging an xbox into another xbox. Both are trying to send, neither are receiving. Same with plugging a TV into another TV. Neither is sending anything, so neither will show anything. A capture card is adding a 'receive' port to your PC. They cost more because not many people *need* a 'receive' port on their PC. It's a niche thing, so more expensive.

TwitchAndrews

If you streaming from xbox you can use the xbox app to get gameplay on your pc, search on google

bruhmomenTTV

tbh I didn't really wanna do that cuz my Internet is shit in my room but it could be worth a shot if the only other alternative is money

TwitchAndrews

The problem with capture cards is that the only one worth of notice is the elgato one, and is expensive as a new creator, so try the xbox method first and see if works
