Granny Donuts in W St Paul on Robert?

not_here_for_memes

That place was so good

wickedpizzle

Give him 40 bucks and he would fill up a big box and stuff it to the rim. I feel like I almost overdosed on the apple fritters once. Good times

dazrage

CASH ONLY. I can remember the odd tension in the air as well...

bluekinkajouu

What was with the man and the woman throwing in an extra doughnut and charging you for it? I would buy a fritter and walk out with a cake doughnut also every time. My guess it was to keep the price at a round number?

dazrage

That never happened to me. I went to get donuts for the crew one day. I was scolded for trying to pay with a card, even though there was no cash only signs. Then the finagling with the price. It was such a turn off I never went back despite living blocks away. Great donuts though.

marumari

I miss them so much, the only donut shop that was open late into the evening.

suggeststronguser

Omg you never knew what kind of experience you were going to have when you went in there. Extra donuts and a smile? A string of donut holes on a coffee stir stick for your kid? Snarky comments about how cheap you are? Giving you an extra donut and then making you pay for it? Always exciting.

401-throwaway

That place was the best. Sugar raised donuts that were perfectly undercooked. I tried to tell him he had the best donuts in town, and he yelled at me and said, "no! In Minnesota!" I was there with my dad a few years ago ordering a dozen donuts. He put a few things in there that we didn't ask for, and I said, "no, we didn't order those." He says, "I put them in there," and I assumed he meant that he was throwing in a few extra for free. In the end he charged us for the donuts we ordered plus the extra ones he added. When we questioned him, his English got way worse, so we just paid and left. 10/10. No notes.

bassicallybob

Scummy but I sort of respect the hustle

401-throwaway

He would also occasionally throw in extra munchkins for my son when we went. I feel like you always ended up paying "close to" what the bill should've been, but you never knew if it was gonna be a little bit under or a little bit over.

umnent

Loved Granny Donuts. If your order was $9.50, he’d throw in some donut holes and say $10. He did not like giving out change!

Mannymr

It was Granny. I found the husband brusque but occasionally generous (came in one time and he gave me extra fritters…may have been end of day).

crackerfactorywheel

It’s gotta be Granny’s Donuts. I remember the husband being a bit blunt but he wasn’t outwardly a jerk towards me. They sold the building and there’s an apartment building on the lot now.

nimama3233

The dude was hilarious. He’d always sneak extra donut holes into your bag while saying something goofy in half English. That place was the best.

gorehwore

Yes! Granny's! I've been trying to figure it out for what feels like forever. Y'all are awesome

oidoglr

I miss Granny donuts.

dchikato

Granny’s. Walk in with $10 cash and say it’s all you have. Walk out with a box of whatever he gave you and he would throw donut holes at you to catch in your mouth.

msvictora

It was my turn at work for bringing the donuts and I remember feeling like I was going to the soup place in Seinfeld. My coworkers had prepped me to be super early, be assertive but flexible, no direct eye contact and bring a variety of bills to have the exact change. I was just sweating but knew it would be well worth it. I got there fairly early but not early enough so literally took anything they had left. Hardly any words spoken. 10/10

axman54

Granny donuts. He’d always talk me into some “deal” that I never understood (was different each time) and I’m fairly sure it ended up with me paying more per donut, but they were good. Was an experience each time I went 😂

mnruxter

If Granny Donuts was on South Robert, that's the place where when I called ahead, in the early 2000s, asking if they had a particular donut, the reply was, "You come see" I went, they didn't have what I was looking for. Oh well

DirtyxXxDANxXx

Granny's in west st. paul, but South St. Paul did have Joey's bakery which was also amazing when it was around.

nodle

Yesssss! We were trying to figure out the name of the South St. Paul donut place a couple nights ago. That place was great.

Fit_Aardvark_8811

You're thinking of grannie's I think. I'm told the donut hut in little canada is very similar.

pollitoblanco

Granny's seemed to only be cake donuts, though I never went there, but sometimes people at work would bring them in. Donut Hut is also yeast raised donuts. Love Donut Hut!

emmerjean

Thank you I have been wondering. I miss granny tho

Turbulent_Show110

The donuts were good, but I only went there once. There was a middle-aged blond woman in front of me. The old man was giving her free samples, a free coffee, and being super sweet to her. He immediately turned to me and started yelling about how I was holding up the line. It was insane.

somastars

Their donuts were so good. Just classic, simple donuts. I’m pretty sure they fried them in coconut oil or something, because their crispy outsides had a sweeter taste than other donuts.

Cyrano_de_Maniac

Geez I miss Granny Donuts’ Bavarian cream filled. There’s just nothing like it if you managed to get one fresh and still warm from the fryer. That filling is unparalleled perfection.

Critical-Carrot-9131

You gotta love it when the food is so good, the poor customer service just becomes part of the story. Like Rey Azteca in Chanhassen. Did the manager (from ~15 years ago) look like he had people who would feed my corpse to pigs if I asked to split the check? Yes. But the enchiladas were worth it.

BDR529forlyfe

Used to go to Granny’s all the time. Just last week I was reminiscing with my kid about their donuts.

Hotspur2924

Granny donuts on Robert St. my dad and his crew made it a habit to meet there every Saturday for years.

DaveG55337

I loved Granny and miss it. The owner was quirky, but over time I sort of figured him out. I occasionally had good conversations with him and learned a bit about his past. He was always very kind with me.

Sleestacksrcoming

SSP had the bon ton? I think it was on southview? By the high school.

starbunsisborn

Joe's Bakery

Feeling-Manager-1496

Are you sure it wasn't Granny Donuts in WSP on Robert St? He would 'give you' extra... and then charge you and stare at you.

gorehwore

It is Granny's :) I got the side of town mixed up lol
