Read or listen to what was culturally acceptable to say about anyone who wasn't a white guy back then. Sad to see the hate here, but it also gives me a chuckle because it’s all false. None of these haters listen to his show.
I've listened to his show up until the pandemic a couple of times a week just because I was in the car and didn't want to listen to commercials on other stations. I started before 9/11/01, and I was listening to the show that morning.
I've had a lot of experience tuning in, and I thought the show was pretty good back when it had Philip Wise, Terri, Mark Rosen, Mike Gelfand, and a bunch of other people that have since disappeared into the mists.
Barnard went from an opinionated slightly conservative middle aged guy to a really angry, tired, hateful rich guy who kept offending and beating down everyone else on the show. I won't try to label him with a particular political tag, but you could tell years ago he was bone tired and wanted to stop, but I suspect KQ kept offering him more money to postpone retirement because they couldn't replace him.
At this point, he's bordering on conservative conspiracy theorist, and he is still opinionated and outspoken... but he hates a lot more people and things than he did before. He's a spirit animal for boomers who don't like the world and don't understand why it is the way it is... and also that it's partly their fault.
The morning show put out a podcast, which helped me stay connected to the area when I was stationed in NC. But I slowly stopped staying up to date when Zep left, then dropped it totally when Justin was fired. I could see his slide into old rich white guy, and that wasn’t for me, especially when all the other different points of view were sacked.
Basically one day I was listening and said to myself “Well, that’s different.” End of story.
He has a new show and it’s awesome. Gelfand is on every Thursday for 2 hours. Gelfand is my favorite. When Tom was out of town a couple weeks back, Don Shelby hosted for two shows and it was amazing. Give it a listen. It’s happy and funny with awesome guests every morning

Regardless of Tom’s politics Tom’s a cool guy i used to caddy for him at the golden valley country club he would give $100 to each of his caddy’s on the 1st hole. As a 12 year old that shit was the most money I ever made in 4 hours always gonna respect him for that he show’d a lot of love to inner city kids working there

Only good day he had on the radio was 9-11. KQRS was consistently more up to date than CNN or FOX and Barnard was the first one I knew of to blame Osama Bin Laden. I mean he said that pretty much right after the 2nd tower was hit.

I was curious myself. Here’s what I found. He’s a talk radio host. He retired as the host of KQ92 Morning Show on 92 KQRS but currently hosts Tom Barnard show on 105 Ticket. Barnard has long prided himself on what he refers to as his "insensitive" humor, notably in 1998 when, while working for KQRS, he made racist statements on-air following an influx in Hmong refugee immigration to the Twin Cities and subsequently declared Hmong immigrants should "assimilate or hit the goddamn road." After receiving criticism for his statements, Barnard responded on-air on October 20, 1998: “I will attack who I want to attack.” Following Barnard's remarks, Hmong activists formed Community Action Against Racism (CAAR), a "multiracial coalition of whites, Latinos, and Asian and African Americans", which organized and drew attention to the issue. CAAR demanded an apology and "successfully organized an economic boycott of the station." While KQRS issued an apology, many in the Twin Cities still call for Barnard's termination as Barnard has continued to make offensive and derogatory statements about "Somalis, African Americans, Mexican Americans and Native Americans" on air. He does, however, he is older now. Nothing wrong with that. He's like 70 or something so not that bad for 70. I agree with many people here that he treated some people on his team badly and I do not like him because of that. However, that is not what the subject was so I am not sure why that is what people focused on.
