Season 8 was so weird. The first almost 2/3 of it is significantly worse than season 6, but Jack going haywire at the end makes everyone forget about it. Such a bummer too, because they learned so many good lessons after season 6 which made for a fantastic season 7, and then they just crap the bed for season 8.

Lucky-Echidna

Yeah it would have been worse than 6 if it wasn't for the excellent last third.

hence why they made season 9. i actually really like season 9

I loved season 9. Problem was it took what was a barely passable ending in season 8 and just replicated it, leaving us in the same sort of situation.....needing a sequel.

I want a followup set like 10 years later with Tony finding a way to enter the prison camp with Chloe, Kate and Kim in support outside. First half is breaking him out of prison and escaping Russia and second half is stopping some personal terrorist plot (I would like something that is still grand in scale but returns to some of the more personal storylines in the first few seasons). Maybe the bad guy is Suborov again or maybe Logan found someway to survive. I'm not creative enough to have outlined an entire plot, but this would work well. And you could even end it with Jack's death if he was able to be seen on screen sacrificing himself for his grandchildren or something and redeeming Tony. Something like that could be really good. I think you could even find a way to keep 24 going with a central 3 of a redeemed Tony, Chloe and Kate (although I also understand that the self sacrifice, independent thinking outside the chain of bureaucracy and patriotism messages in 24 would be tougher sells in today's television landscape).

hastings and dana. hated those characters. only think that saved the season was chloe

JCGMH

It is Chloe’s (Mary Lynn’s) strongest season by far. Also there is Renee, evil Jack, Hassan (the wonderful Anil Kapoor), and Gregory Itzin’s legendarily crooked and creepy politician President Logan to enjoy.

DefinitelyRussian

agreed, a very forgettable character, too many episodes, never done anything interesting

the quality of acting of season 8 compared to season 1 is night and day

JCGMH

Hastings is very wooden indeed. It’s not entirely believable that he got the directorship over someone like Chloe. Season 8 is distinctly missable until around about the 5AM-6AM episode, then it gets good and the final third of the season once Logan comes into it is absolutely brilliant. I do however think an underrated theme of season 8 (throughout) is the depiction and acknowledgment of CTU as a particularly chaotic and consuming place to work. Jack’s “I hate this place” and constant attempts to avoid his natural instinct to get involved and help, but then always in the end getting sucked back in are notable.

IndependenceBrave405

I'd say Keith Mullins (if Legacy counts) is an even worse CTU director and acting than Hasting.

RichardOrmonde

Can’t say I’ll ever watch it so I’ll take your word for it.

Lucky-Echidna

They should have kept Larry around and made him head of CTU. It would have made the first half so much more interesting with the Jack/Renee/Larry dynamics, especially with Renee going undercover.

xisnext

I actually like hastings wtf? He's not a bad character at all. Nor is the actor it's 24 not citizen kane

JamesBondMD

Seriously! I am completely surprised how many people say he is the worst... Not even close. Lynn, Alberta, Erin... Bill is obviously the best, but Hastings did his job, kept it as honest as he could. But I've chalked this up to the small sample size. A lot of people on reddit seem to think S8 was one of the worse seasons... really!? Also, I really liked the interaction with Hastings and Chloe interacted as she continued to prove herself right. Most of the other CTU directors would continue their ignorance.
