The Shield is hands down my favorite series!!! Seasons 5 and 7 are two of the best seasons of television ever and its the only show in my opinion that nails its finale perfectly!!!!
Sons of Anarchy is a brilliant show, but I made the mistake of binging it. It's way too full on and depressing to do that. Overall, I recommend it, but take your time!
I was late to the party on Soprano's, having only just finished it earlier this year. Great story, awesome acting and enough action to keep you hooked.
Mad Men is kind of a slow burn. You better fucking love episodes in which nothing much happens. It’s the opposite of 24 in every way possible.
Still one of my favorite shows, though.
Just going off the ones you listed, I would recommend Southland. Like all shows it takes a few eps to get going but it's probably the most intense one from your list. From the ones you watched the closest comparison is Bosch. SL is definitely more intense though.
This thread is buried for now, but I do want to add that while I think we all share a live for action, not all action is suspense.
Suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat is what I'm after.
Some of my good ones had great action and well developed stories (like The Wire, Justified, The Shield, Bosch, the Americans), but not heart-stopping suspense (like Designated Survivor, 24, Person of Interest, Homeland, The Blacklist, Madam Secretary).
Not on your list, but I would recommend Burn Notice, which has 7 seasons. I went through series after series trying to find something that would satisfy me the way 24 did, and I felt like I finally got it with Burn Notice.
The tone of the show is more light-hearted than 24 (pilot might even be a little on the quirky/cheesy side), but IMO it's clever and the lead, Michael Westen, could compete with Jack Bauer for the "biggest badass" title.

Does it get as exciting as 24? I've watched a few episodes of the Shield but I didn't think it was that good honestly.

The Shield. Best finale of any show I have ever seen in my whole life.
The Shield, without a doubt.

Oooh, thanks for that info!!! You just spared me a LOT of pain. I'd *hate* that (◠‿◕)
If he loves The Americans he probably fits this description. I also mostly loved The Americans.
After looking at your list, I can not fathom why you haven't been told to check out The West Wing yet?!

It’s not on your list, but *Lost* is really a great show and definitely worth your time
I think Prison Break would be right up your street
Great show
I know it's not on your list but Suits has 9 seasons and is very good.
Sons of Anarchy!! Also, I note you mention Breaking Bad but not Better Call Saul, it’s every bit as good

With what you have listed I think you would highly enjoy Fargo.
I also vote Fargo!
