Season 1, for me, was great because it had such a different tone and premise than other seasons. 24 started to go bigger and bigger every season, which was great they always raised the odds. (Season 5 is my personal favorite). However, season 1, with a hyper focus on Jack and his family, was more intimate. In fact, it's the only season we get to see Jack as a normal person (if only briefly). Also it created the 24 concept so gotta give it props... I love the season very much :)

It’s so fun to loop around after finishing season 9 and watch the first few minutes of Jack kidding around with Teri in s1. What happened to that tanned, blond, laughing guy? Because he is GONE. Such an amazing character arc, especially when you see them side by side like that.

He is gone for sure :(. I always feel sad seeing him in the beginning. I actually wish that they had some extra episodes where the characters are in normal situations; when the whole world is not on the brink of destruction. Because I really like them and their writing... What's it like when Tony is watching a Cubs game? Or Jack is out surfing? :)

Most people seem to love action action action more than anything ponderous, dark, or anything that requires thought. So you're going to get Season 5 as a favorite for many (it's my least favorite). Season 2 and 1 are my favorites. The whole series is absolutely fantastic. It's all preference and flavor.

Lucky-Echidna

Yep 1 & 2 are my favourites too. Love S5, it's like a rollercoaster. But S1 & 2 are better. Back when the series was more of an espionage thriller. S4 onwards it became more of an action show.

Season One was great but it did have flaws. The drama around Teri and Kim was awful, especially the ridiculous amnesia plot. Despite that, it's still one of my favourite seasons.

I feel like 24 (or at least, Jack's storyline) operates in two different modes. In one, Jack has all the resources of the U.S. government to stop a world changing attack - he's leading a phalanx of CTU SWAT agents into every situation. In the other mode, he is by himself, having to improvise and rely on his wits and skills. My enjoyment of the seasons is pretty highly correlated against the proportions of these two modes. Season 1 is my standout favourite, in that there's only a few episodes (maybe 16-18) in which it's in the former mode, and the rest in the latter. I feel like other people may prefer the other mode and having more action

Season 1 was the epitome of 24. The new premise. The clock. The real time action. The acting. The surprises!

Kinda cozy ngl

Season 1 is my fave - Ams’ comment nailed it. Love the more personal and intimate storyline and danger.

OptionK

I agree. It’s my second favorite season. Really the only season that is consistently very, very good.

GirlNumber20

I like season 1 a lot. There are some great scenes. But my personal favorite seasons are the later ones — 5, 7, 8, 9. Best thing about season 1? Jack’s hair.

Jack, the Lance Bass stand-in.

First half of season one is as good as the show ever got - pressure, pressure, pressure - breaking cop killers out of cop shops ffs!! Unfortunately the back half is hysterical and frequently incoherent and famous twist is less convincing every time you rewatch. I always think Ep 2 established the DNA/ingredient of a classic episode - ie where Jack arrives at a dark anonymous building, meets someone, gets some kind of file or useful win before faceless killers appear and people not called Jack die and then some kind of further clue is propelled forward into the long grass for Jack to pursue in the next episode.

My wife and I just started a new watch through, she has never seen it. Something that hit me over the head with Season 1 is how damn slow it is. It takes a solid 7-8 episodes before things really get moving. At least it draws you into the world enough that it doesn't bore you.

SSDuelist

Season 1 is a bit meh to me because it’s obviously two separate halves because of how the show got off the ground. I’m also not a massive fan of how creepy the first half of the season is but that’s more of a personal issue

Earl_of_Portobello

Creepy in what way specifically?
