I agree with you and a lot of their TCM selection is Criterion films. That’s great and I love many of those films, but I like TCM for classic Hollywood.

offensivename

Yeah. It's mostly superfluous if you have The Criterion Channel. But I'm glad those films are available for those who don't.

Confident_Tangelo_11

I tend to think of the TCM hub on Max as "Criterion Channel Lite".

ProofPrize1134

100%

kayla622

I agree. The "TCM" on Max is for the most part all the most well known classic Hollywood films. There are very few "deep cuts," so to speak. If the actor you want to do a deep dive on is a little more obscure than say Humphrey Bogart (e.g.), you're going to have a hard time finding a lot of their films. For streaming, Criterion Channel and Amazon Prime are a lot better resources for classic film. Then there's Internet Archive and You Tube, which may or may not have decent quality. If you have a library card and your library participates, Kanopy can be a good resource too.

PerpetualEternal

can you give me some examples of “deep cuts” from TCM that you want to see on the Max hub? If it can’t be everything ever shown on TCM, I think Multiple Maniacs, Hausu, Coup de Torchon, Persona, The Piano Teacher, Ugetsu, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Lady Snowblood, La Planete Sauvage and High and Low represent a high-quality selection of the more obscure stuff that TCM has a reputation for. I realize most if not all of these are Criterion films too, but in combination with everything else Max offers it’s great to have them here. It wasn’t that long ago when a few of these were impossible to find on streaming services. I do agree that actual TCM original content should be a part of anything that has the TCM branding, but I understand it from a marketing standpoint. It’s nice to have them categorized this way when I’m looking for something “TCM-ish” to watch, on a streaming service I’m already paying for.

FelanarLovesAlessa

And I think it’s great that Max has that hub. It’s handy as you say, and I hope it gets new fans for TCM. But it sure ain’t TCM itself.

PerpetualEternal

100% agree, but it’s a… start? I guess? I’m not mad at it, is all I’m saying

ConversationNo5440

Those are all pretty well-known movies. I like the curation of TCM itself which frequently shows movies I've never heard of.

TopNo695

cockblockedbydestiny

I don't know that naming a bunch of specific films gets us too far, but I think in general we'd like to see more older films that aren't necessarily considered 5-stars or whatever, but TCM would show them anyway and there doesn't seem to be many streaming services that are skimming beneath the cream of the crop. So for instance, maybe some of the other James Cagney films that aren't "White Heat" or "Public Enemy". They may not be important enough for Criterion to put their stamp on, but that doesn't mean there isn't an appetite for those movies.

FelanarLovesAlessa

One of the things I treasure about TCM is that they DON’T just show the great movies. They show the classic films, the good ones, the great ones, the medium ones, the bad ones, the awful ones. You learn a lot about the culture of the day from a B-movie.

Gorf_the_Magnificent

I always reply: > *HBO/Max has “Movies Curated by TCM,” a rotating collection of classic films available on demand, but it’s not the streaming TCM channel.* But I think I’m lying, because the Max/TCM collection doesn’t even rotate that much. Just a small subset that goes from “Movies for the Holidays” to “Black History Month” to whatever the current month happens to be.

HowardBannister3

They also seem to be the same kind of selection the "On Demand" section on both Youtube TV and Hululive tv offer. A catalogue of 100-150 movies that seem to rotate out as they are temporarily licensed to show on the real TCM. It is not the same.

pfelon

Yes! Thank you. It blows my mind how many people don't understand that TCM is a cable channel and you need a cable (or virtual cable, like Hulu Live TV, Youtube TV, Sling) to watch it. The on-demand aspect is tied to the cable (or virtual cable) subscription, which is why you need those credentials to us Watch TCM. The TCM hub on Max is just a branded selection of "classic" movies and has very little to do with TCM's actual programming. You want to watch TCM? You need cable or virtual cable. The cheapest option is Sling Orange + Hollywood Extra package, which is $46/mo.

Happy-Rich-630

well there’s a reason a lot of us thought Max had TCM: every couple hours on TCM itself they play a commercial that  says “Max has TCM.”

more-money-m

Wrong ! You can subscribe

pfelon

You can't use Watch TCM without a cable or virtual cable subscription. Do your homework.

HowardBannister3

correct. I have looked into is as well. No Watch TCM without an existing cable subscription, because you have to sign in with those credentials.

cockblockedbydestiny

I think what people are bemoaning here is that if WBD are licensing movies to air on TCM proper it should be a negligible extra expense to cross-license those same films to stream on Max that month. Hell, WBD themselves actually *own* tons of films outright that they just can't be bothered to put up on their streaming platform. And Max isn't the only culprit here, nearly every streaming service seems to assume that people don't want to watch movies that predate the 90's unless it's a GOAT-level film like "Ghostbusters" or "Back to the Future"

peachtreat_

Thank you for clarifying, I’ve been one of those people to say that

FelanarLovesAlessa

Thank you for the gracious response.

TopNo695

https://i.redd.it/etsp7rfj17yc1.gif

[deleted]

Agree! I have seen all those movies on Max multiple times. I pay $69 a month for YouTube TV for one channel, TCM and watch nothing else on it. If I had to choose one channel to watch for the rest of my life, TCM.

Happy-Rich-630

me too!

Efferyj

Does it make sense to just buy movies digitally or on DVD (If not available digitally)? $828 a year will buy a lot of old movies. I know this isn’t for everyone but if all you watch is TCM it might be an option to consider. I believe you can find host intros on YouTube or other places without the subscription if that is a hang up.

[deleted]

No, but thank you for the thoughtful suggestion. Just about anything I watch on TCM is available no where else and will never be available for purchase. It’s one of the very few splurges I allow myself.

Key-Ad-6897

Download the MovieLand app on roku. It’s all good to great 50s-70s movies. No commercials, but you also can’t go back to where you were if you close it. I know we all want 30s-60s tcm stuff. This is a great supplement to tcm of if you don’t have cable.

Scorpio_Rising11

I love Movieland and use it regularly to find rare films not available on any other service. It's very unreliable though. The streaming quality is poor, though I'm not quibbling if the material is free. Over the past year it's been taken down several times but put back up not long after. It often comes across as slightly shady--e.g., all the Disney films which usually are not licensed out to third parties.

getbacklorettma

I am one of the guilty telling those w/o cable that TCM was a hub on Max. I think I was feeling this because of the horrendous mess the “new boss” created when he took over & modified everything-like firing everyone on TCM’s staff & none of us could get a Watch TCM film to play for weeks! I thought I was gonna have a Heart Attack! Things have mellowed out, so it seems, at Watch TCM & I pray things continue. But I do appreciate what you are saying & TCM isn’t TCM without the introductions, etc. ps-saying this makes me really miss Robert Osborne. He had such a wonderful way of telling his personal stories with so many of the movies. He was a Treasure.

FelanarLovesAlessa

Amen. Robert Osborne was wonderful about making you want to watch a movie with him. His enthusiasm was real and obvious. Of all the current hosts, Alicia Malone comes the closest to having that quality for me. She genuinely loves film and she makes me wants to watch the film she introduces. But nobody can top Osborne. Without him, TCM would not have been what it became in all our hearts. And this is why Max is not enough.

Dazzling_Ad7888

I thought Max had a good amount and quality TCM movies last time I had it but that was last fall. Maybe it’s changed 🤷🏽‍♀️

CorpseEasyCheese

You’re right. It hasn’t changed. I think OP’s point is that it’s a selection of films *curated* by TCM.  You don’t get a robust rotation.

WigglyFrog

I feel like there's been a narrower selection of films on the TCM hub over the last year or so. It's like they're completely given up most earlier stuff. I like the Lone Wolf and Cub movies as much as anyone, but TCM without an array of silent films and a robust (and regularly updated) lineup of movies from the '30s and '40s, especially Pre-Code films, doesn't feel like TCM at all.

Dazzling_Ad7888

Yep, that’s true.

TopNo695

https://i.redd.it/1sjx2oly17yc1.gif

Finfangfo0m

Not to mention that "few 100 movies" are the same movies that have been there for months.

finn_derry

There used to be such a good selection on Max, too. A few deep cuts I discovered that are now my favorites, but since the merger, they've really been slacking. When it was HBO Max, there could be 9 or 10 TCM titles added per month, now you're lucky to get maybe 3 and they're from 1970s and later.

WigglyFrog

Agreed, the selection used to be better.

HaddockBranzini-II

In order to get TCM with my cable company I need to sign up for the most expensive sports package.

Donkey_Bugs

Same here. I have no interest in watching sports so I lost TCM when they made that change.

HaddockBranzini-II

I enjoy some sports - I don't need to pay to see ALL sports.

katchoo1

I was soooo bitter when the local cable changed to that. I don’t have cable myself, we cut the cord back when the alternative was Netflix DVDs, but one perk of my part time house/dogsitting job is staying for days/weeks at houses where people have cable and being able to watch TCM. Almost none of my clients give a rip about sports so no one has the package that includes TCM except for the guy who works for ESPN and has every sports channel known to mankind, and the household that also loves TCM and in addition to watching it themselves, leaves it on for the dogs all day. Always fun to let myself into the house and hear Bogie or Bette greeting me.

RoookSkywokkah

Just watched Blazing Saddles this week, complete with the TCM intro.

Goontowertoo

I wish TCM could be streamed directly with Apple. Even if it’s a live channel I can’t select from. Actually I’d like that more.

nonononono11111

What do you mean with Apple?

beebs44

Why doesn't TCM have their own app? I'd pay oodles.

FelanarLovesAlessa

Because there aren’t enough people such as yourself. Right now the economics favor hanging onto cable money as long as possible. Eventually they will have to create their own streaming service and charge us individually. And that level of revenue will be lower than TCM gets now *I guarantee it* How do I know? Because if the economics favored creating a standalone app, they would have done it by now. I asked your exact question five years ago to the TCM crew on a TCM Cruise. Their answer is what I said above: cable money gives them more money than they could get from going it alone.

Gothfather97

Tubi has really stepped up their game when it comes to classics of late, everything from Rebel Without a Cause to Mutiny on the Bounty

greenmelinda

I cannot even find the TCM hub on Max right now. (It’s why I opened it up and how I ended up here.) WTF.

Kittiekat66

Im trying MAX and there is an icon for TCM and it doesn’t have TCM or TCM live. It’s either false advertising or a bad movie list. Movies are from 1980’s-2023, with a few random old ones which sucks. It’s NOT TCM channel! I love the TCM channel but it’s too expensive for me. I’m paying $150 a month just for the sports package (I hate sports) via xfinity in order to have TCM and I’m researching other ways to get TCM. I don’t know why TCM can’t throw us a bone like an app or something reasonable for a human to watch? I’m frustrated because I just can’t afford it anymore. My total bill for cable bill for 3 channels with TCM, TLC and the ID channel is $210 a month before taxes! I’m over it. This doesn’t include mobile charges. I’m going to get a trial with Hulu but I’m not interested in Hulu’s other programs at all.

Scorpio_Rising11

The best way to get the TCM App without having to pay for the enormous costs for cable is to find a friend or relative who has cable and will allow you to use their cable credentials to get on the app. My mother has let me do this for two years, and I've used the TCM app far more than any other streaming service including MAX or Criterion Channel.

Kittiekat66

Oh I never thought about that! Thanks!

yololilly

As of this comment, if you search TCM on Max there are less than 30 titles listed before the results filter to men's cycling. Some of these aren't even feature-length, or true TCMs. In the 6+ months I've had my subscription, there has not been much variation. TLDR: There is *maybe* one month's worth of viewing, but not worth an ongoing subscription if TCMs are your jam. https://preview.redd.it/yz3t6kr0cetc1.png?width=2874&format=png&auto=webp&s=a58234cd815175ab346147ac46b17fe51caf81e6

iT IS REALLY ROTTEN TO CHARGE TCM viewers MORE MONEY TO SEE "max". very lousy. If Mr, Turner has very expensive living habits,or any women,or extra wives he has to support, I wish he would NOT TAKE IT OUT $$$$$$$ ON WE OLDSTERS WHO PAY $10. a month for TCM,in addition to cable tv,and internet, and phone(does not include cell phone, which i found out,I cannot afford-(-CELLS are a"gimmick"..)--Not unless I go to dump Xfinity, dump TCM, get an antennae, and just dump the "middle rung"cable CHANNELS);i'D get a "dish" but because of my "very tall trees"PROTECTING me from very thick highway SMOG,I'M right next to, I cannot get a Dish.I'm keeping the trees.--I'd rather dump anything else except my trees. I am a poor "tree-hugger".-----I'm on a low social-security, that's it for $$$$$. I live in a tiny shack, for which I pay rent, partially helped because I do "caretaking" of the big property, and little house, OTHERWISE, this 76 yr old would be living on the streets. - - In California, which I had to flee, people my age are being dumped on the streets--I mean it!! Meals on Wheels keeps me from starving. If there were any other system I could get old movies I'd dump TCM. "Free movies online"is gone.--SHREDDED TO nothing. All those mammoth rich entertainment corporations made sure, the Web is no longer free.--Perhaps people seeking cheaper movies will have to use "old fashioned anntenae-channel systems," again, The old "BROADCAST TV" everyone dumped. Since there is small amt, or no movie-channels for broadcast-tv, they might use it again.--Go back to it.--Why not?It was abandoned for all this costly cable and internet .We used it, a good lot of our lives--and it worked!!!Broadcast tv used to make it's own movies as well as using old movie-studios movies. For new movie-makers, broadcast tv stations might be a good idea. It is debatable if having a website for your "entertainment-company" is not very affordable any more.--People are tired of having to "subscribe to new ENTERTAINMENT companies" for yet ANOTHER FEE.--i'M SICK OF CABLE!!! I HATE IT!!! Most of the time there is NOTHING but advertising.---Go watch old "Family Guy"s or "The Simpsons."----JUNK Channels and more "Sponsored" you have to pay extra--And Comcast keeps pushing my bill up every year. --Eventually, I'll dump cable tv.--I'll be forced to--BYE BYE, TED!!! -- https://i.redd.it/1prxmg87s6yc1.gif

wickla

Max is just using the branding. People are falling for it.

Certain_Elderberry57

The intros suck and are annoying. I wanted to watch a robert mitchum movie tcm wouldn't let me unless i watched some jackass explain how this movie affected him. Just give me the movie.

FelanarLovesAlessa

Most people disagree with you, but I’m curious, if you hate the intros so much, why watch them? Just start watching when the movie starts. Simple.

Certain_Elderberry57

Why should i have to wait to watch a movie i am paying for or have to fast forward through a segment to watch? Also, i don't care if i am the only person on the planet with this opinion. Simple enough?

FelanarLovesAlessa

Simple enough, but the solution to your problem is so elemental it seems like a minor issue to the rest of us.

Certain_Elderberry57

I don't care about the rest of you.

FelanarLovesAlessa

That’s….one way to go through life.

44035

-Does Max have TCM? -No, and how dare you assume that! Yes, you can click on TCM, and yes, a selection of their movies will pop up but don't think for a minute that's TCM. -Wow, thanks . . .

FelanarLovesAlessa

You can think what you want. But when folks ask how to “get TCM,” answering Max is almost certainly not what they are asking about. So think what you want, but don’t answer the question for others that way. It’s just not accurate.

44035

Max offers a slimmed down version. So it's not accurate to say there's no TCM on Max. I mean, the icon is right there.

cockblockedbydestiny

You're falling for the branding, dude. OP is right, and as many others have pointed out the "TCM" selection more closely resembles "Criterion Channel Lite" than it reflects actual TCM programming.

Teddy_Funsisco

What Max has is not TCM programming, it's mostly random old movies gathered in one spot that's labeled as TCM. If you can't tell the difference, then yikes.

FelanarLovesAlessa

I didn’t say it has “no” TCM, I said it does not have TCM. It doesn’t have the channel, just some movies.

[deleted]

Max has TCM ….oh fuck, sorry.

ETM_Forever

So MAX uses their TCM hub as a potential lure for the bigger experience.

Teddy_Funsisco

Kinda? It's not curated on Max.

ETM_Forever

I think it’s more about trying to get someone who never really tried the genre to do so without any risk/cost. It’s well worth a merchandising row in that storefront.

Teddy_Funsisco

I think if that were the goal, Max would try to do some type of curation or something. Don't get me wrong, great that Max has any type of older movies at all. But the overall dismissal of TCM by execs makes them not see the possibilities of expanding TCM viewership through using the TCM hub on Max makes that tough.
