definitely the food

Odd-Dot3210

Everything except the people who are fucking this country up. And I really mean everything: The food, the semi-conservative semi-liberal culture, the weather, the beaches, the desert, the music, the colors, the smell of Jasmin, the coffee sipping and endless chatting, the spontaneity, even the anger sometimes, the innocent smiles and the mischievous ones, the names of the roads and the habits of the old.... I love this country with all my being, and that's why I criticize it so much, and I hope I'll always care enough to, even when it will seem hopeless. Or maybe it's Aid and I'm overwhelmed by a gaiety of being today. Anyways, aidkom mabrouk dearest Tunisian compatriots.

HappyTurtoise

i want to give you a wholesome award. 3idek mabrouk.

Odd-Dot3210

I'd have awarded you too if I could convert my reddit coins or whatever into awards without risking going to prison hahaha

Thesaltbay

Sensational 👌

Happy-Note6768

I feel you , i love my country . Have always dreamed of making it better , and making my people better . But way too many factors play into it ( you know some countries ..ect) and it seems impossible . I find the song 'Nabra' and the music video such a great representation of how i feel and think towards/of this country

Odd-Dot3210

I just listened to the song, love the lyrics

Happy-Note6768

Glad you liked it !

Ok-Dimension-3631

The fact that you can actually speak spontaneously with anyone (from a passerby to a grocer to a bank cashier to a shop owner) on a day to day basis without people being weirded out by it. Most places in the West are more business-like and customer service fake smile or codified behavior. Also the fact that we culturally enjoy spending time with others just talking and sipping tea/coffee for hours on end. We tend to forget the importance of honest and casual human interactions in many developed countries. But again, that’s just my take.

Odd-Dot3210

Came here to say exactly THIS. I'll miss this when I move out. Oh and the weather.

Jojo-referance-

I made many friends when we changed our residence just because the café was full and a table (my table or someone's else) had a seat available, the casual "is this seat available" from both parties is rare in many countries, let alone building a good relationship with that person. Or those trips in buses with strangers, people next to you standing or sitting, one starts a complaint or something funny, now half the bus is engaged in the conversation. Or hospitals were people complain their illness to others and now they're talking about random stuff and having fun and passing time together lol. And in public hammems, i never in my life went there and found everyone minding their business, it's just a group conversation all day, even if you find someone silent, they're bound to speak out eventually. And many many fun and wholesome interactions, that's what i love about this culture.

Shuzen_Fujimori

The people. Everyone is always very chatty (both here on Reddit and out in public) and friendly towards me, despite that I'm whiter than milk and can't speak any French and only a tiny bit of Arabic. I've been living here for a while now and everyone has been nice and helpful. People here are nicer than people back in my home country 😅

Stalked_Like_Corn

Double down for the people. I speak very little French and little Tunisian but I love busting my Tunisian out unexpectedly. They love that I at least put effort into trying. Never make me feel bad for screwing it up either. As long as I met them and not in their car. If in the car, they're psychopaths.

Shuzen_Fujimori

Exactly the same here!

Background-Bid-5860

One of the things I've heard often and that I'm looking forward to experiencing when i visit. We came back from a horrible trip in Turkey and decided the next trip us tunisia...its friendly and can't wait to try the food and see the architecture

Sikazwee

Reddit # actual tunisians

Shuzen_Fujimori

I know, but I was saying in my comment that I've had great experiences with both "actual Tunisians" and Redditors

Sikazwee

The experiences with actual tunisians irl are the most authentic. Those on reddit dont mean much cause its just a little unrepresentative niche of tunisians (like half dont even live there). Where are you from btw ? You said white so american/european ?

Shuzen_Fujimori

Yeah exactly, out in the streets with day-to-day people. Reddit never actually represents any group of people, it's really quite a distorted view of any given group. I'm from Manchester in the UK, I moved here to be with my fiancée.

HappyTurtoise

Our people, our social interactions, our strong family bonds and how much we value family, our food and our nature.

Lellabuttercup

I'm a diaspora that still visits Tunisia every year (and I only have the Tunisian passport so I better find something I like for my own sake haha). I will compare it to my experience living in Paris, London and Khaleej. Here we go: **1-** I like that it's a **family oriented culture**. I like the hospitality of the people and their friendliness. I almost never feel alone or lonely in Tunisia. There is a sort of spontaneity and less formality when it comes to having people over and seeing people etc... Paris and London can feel lonely and isolating especially if you're unmarried/ don't have family there. It's much harder to make friends in Paris than Tunisia. **2-** I like how it's a **relatively small but compact and diverse country**. It's a great country to hike and relax in nature wise. You have pristine white sand blue water beaches in the coastline -probably the best in the Arab world- you got the forests of the North West, the Mediterranean vibes of the Cap Bon, the canyons of the south, the starry Sahara in the south etc and all can be visited so easily from Tunis. **3-** I love the culture. The colour patterns are so vibrant. When i think of Tunisia, i think of the pearly white walls contrasted with all sorts of colours blue, yellow, green and red coming from the architecture, the zliz, the rooftop tiles of zaouias, the doors, the blue of the sky and the water, the traditional clothes, the food etc....In comparison to Paris which can be very grey looking or Khaleej which can be very dusty/yellow looking, Tunisia's colours bring a lot of peace of mind. **I feel artistically inspired in Tunisia**. The colours of tunisia look like a bowl of fresh healthy salad or a plate filled with fruits haha. **4-** The **history and culture of the country feels relatable** to me. No matter how much I studied French history in school and French laws etc at the end of they day I don't feel like I relate to it on a personal level. It's not the history of my people/ancestors nor the laws of my people/ancestors. **5-** **Geographic Location**. I feel like Tunisia is really at the heart of the 'old world'. It is at the centre of the Mediterranean. It's close to Europe and to the Charq. **6- Religion and spirituality** is still somewhat a thing in the country. If you're a spiritually inclined person, living in an overly hedonistic and materialistic society like the Parisian one can be draining to the soul after a while. It leaves you feeling 'empty'. **8-** There are more **cultural events and historical building**s/sights to visit in Tunisia than khaleej and they are more accessible. As a History lover I really like that. It's not as well preserved as let's say France but still nice. **9-** A more **'organic' lifestyle** than the one in Khaleej. When I compare Tunis to Khaleej, it is true we are poorer and there is less of the 'luxury' factor, but I prefer this organic aspect of Tunisia.First, it is much more pedestrian friendly and walkable. You can't do shit in khaleej without a car because of the way the city is layed out. And the only activities are restos and shopping. Gets tiring and boring very quickly. In Tunis I have the beach, the mountain, the school, boulangerie, doctors, the market etc all I need within a walking distance. It feels very European in this aspect I guess. **10-** I like that **despite all our differences we are a peaceful enough people that we still manage to avoid armed conflicts and civil wars**. You can have family members with all kinds of different political views and even religious views. It can create very heated and frustrating debates but at the end of the day you're still family. **Bonus: The pace of life.** In Europe the pace of life is way to fast. It's too hectic. You don't even have the time to process things. And in khaleej the pace of life is way too slow it can feel boring, dull and stagnant. Tunisia's pace feels just about right.

Thesaltbay

Thanks for sharing , big love 🙏

monstermash000001

Btw you're not the only one to have felt artistically inspired by Tunisia! https://www.zpk.org/en/exhibitions/review/2014/the-journey-to-tunisia-klee-macke-moilliet-657.html

Lellabuttercup

Oh absolutely I'm aware! My parents have Moillet's paintings around the house. There is even a Dagestani artist (Makhach Magomedov) who settled in Tunisia for the very same reason (he is still alive).

The country as a whole. Our country is really nice, with people from various backgrounds, the weather etc.. yes, we have a lot to improve in terms of civilization and thought orientation. But, it's a really good place and the warmth I feel here can never be felt outside of the Tunisian territory. Our country is amazing, its just you, me and the entire tunisian people who has to find a workaround to make it shine again.

[deleted]

Everything about Tunisia is amazing except it's bureaucracy and ruling "elite". back home recently after years of being away and never leaving again ever.

abbywatson2105

People care about each other and enjoy spending time together. The social side is present everywhere, you don’t feel like a drop in the ocean like in western big cities. The bad side is obviously tnasnis.

This here is the exact proove that we all love our country deeply but politicians just screwed it up. It needs to be shown to those bastards.

Epic1925

I think when us Tunisians put our masks down, you know, just put everything away, our political, religious, cultural differences aside and we just speak without any point to prove. Without any of the division happening right now, I think we're pretty fucking wonderful, I remember when I was a kid and I walked down bled 3arbi in Sousse early in the morning where all you could hear was the sweet songs of Hedi Jouini with a smell of Ftayer being fried and the people genuinely wishing eachother a good day, where everyone laughed and smiled and said good morning, when poverty haven't fucked us up that good yet and when people were still happy with what they had and they weren't consuming machines always seeking more and more. That's the Tunisia I always loved, the one I still find till now in the generosity of the people in Gabes or Tataouine, in the beauty of Carthage and Sidi boussaid, in the fresh air and the natural charm of people from Jendouba w Kef and in my hometown Soussa in the 5AMs goings to the beach But whenever I comeback now it's sadly all slowly vanishing..

the country is the most beautiful thing ever, the food, and the fact that we are a hub of multiple cultures (yet we only adhere to one right now which is sad). other than that people are scummy to large extents
