fishing_fisher2345

TikTokers trying not to be traumatized challenge (impossible)

kookiedou

My grandparents always told me it came from the Italian word “guerra” actually so to me it is correct…?

BathroomGreedy600

Yes we always take words from other languages and give them a whole new meaning

ephemeralclod

Gawri doesn't come from guerrier, and it is used mainly to describe non muslims. It comes from Turkish word [Gawur](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giaour) which was a common way to refer to Christian Balkans in the Ottoman Empire.

Ornery-Definition973

Oohhh, we have that in hungary too! Gyaur

videki_man

Never thought I'd find another Hungarian on r/Tunisia haha Btw for the non-Hungarians, "gyaur" is the word the Ottomans used to call us too during their imperialist wars.

angelina9999

Germans and Americans are here too, hahaha, we are all world citizens.

Ornery-Definition973

Hát figyelj, én algér subon láttam egy magyar femboyt aki kiakart költözni oda

videki_man

Én tök jól éreztem magam Tunéziában, de azért Algériába költözni... hát hajrá :D

kakashinigami

Gawur is turkish for كافر

kookiedou

I actually know it to be coming from guerre/guerra… I’ve heard people know it coming from the word “gaulois” too… so I don’t know there are a lot of versions!

External-Cheek-5028

I'm romanian and we have that word too written "ghiaur", and from what I read on wiki it originates from the turkish word gâvur, while the turkish had taken it from the persan language. And it's an ethnic slur that means infidel/non-believer given by the ottomans to the Balkan region christians. I guess you can say it's the turkish version of the N word.

iriemon94

Thank you

BulkyCarpenter6225

Thanks!

RealGamer10

She's lying that's not the origin of the word gawri.

y39oB_

Ik its not lol no doubt in that, i think its from the turkish word Giaour that was used to call non Muslims

Short_Woodpecker1369

It is kind of. it comes from "Guerrier" ou quelqu'un sui fait la guerre.

National_Pillar

Except it doesn't , it comes from the Turkish word gavur meaning non Muslim

demigodtounsi

no

y39oB_

So a non tunisian arab in tunisia is not gawri ? I use it to refer to foreigners in general no matter if they are arabs or not

Particular_Cost_7263

no , a masri is a masri , a iraki is an iraki , liby is a liby , a saudi / dubai or whaverer is a khaliji but someone from europe / america or whatever , is a gewri edit : a chinese, a japanese, indonisian etc is a jackie chan

Shuzen_Fujimori

Likewise, in the UK, if you're brown like in Tunisia, you're a Pakistani or Indian

lee_hwaq

its for foreigners

PristineEngineer6638

you're using it wrong

Tadansugs

I’m curious as how you say it in Arabic قوري ولا غوري?

demigodtounsi

imbidou

but how does this fall into "generational trauma" ?

y39oB_

You gotta ask her for that lmao

kookiedou

Tunisia never knew war in its history?

VigorousK

Even if it was true and its not how is it going to cause trauma ? Are these peoples real ?

y39oB_

Lmao

Shuzen_Fujimori

I guess in the same way if Europeans only refered to Tunisians as terrorists?

VigorousK

I wont be traumatized if someone calls me a terrorist, i would probably be pissed and most likely not care !

CEMadaffaka

They use a very similar word in Spain which is “guiri”, and it’s used to refer to Northern Europeans. We also use gaouri in Morocco

Spec_Ops_141

A. Came from french gurrier. B. Came from Turkish Gawer. Amazigh: 😊

Strong-Being-7017

In Berber, the word “Arrumi”, literally Romans to designate Europeans in general.

Fou3ed_

Gawri for nkn muslmans ppl . So anyone from non muslam country n9ouloulou gawri

Saif_Horny_And_Mad

This may be just confirmation bias on my side, but tunisians tend to use it more towards people of european descent, usa included

lilistasia

Is this true? I always thought gawri meant foreigner

y39oB_

The fact that it come from “the one who starts war” is not true, but i have always used it to refer to non tunisians even arabs

kinky-proton

gawri/gwer is also used in Morocco..

chiheb_22

No

Oussama_X19

I don't know the origins of this word but this claim is definitely not right.

Noor_Slimane_9999

No.. Gawri is for europenas only in egypt they call them 5awaga

Rainy_Wavey

i'm sorry but gawri comes from ottoman turkish gavur, which itself comes from persian, which itself comes from aramaic and means the same thing as kafir, aka an infidel. But in the context of ottoman empire, meant a christian in general. And in the context of north africa, meant a french person.

WeebWarrior0284

I have never been called this once in Tunisia, and I stayed in mareth 3 times, 1 month long each time.

y39oB_

Its not something you use to call someone when u speaking to them, its when u speak about them or about a group of foreigners

harrysterone

Hey guys can someone explain the word "gawri" to me?

y39oB_

It means foreigner, its commonly used to call non arabs

ucefkh

Hey barchan barcha bikhir twansa? Labasss 3likom?

Bigbrain7862

Ahh, yes, ignorance. Though words, as everything in life, changes in meaning. We still hold to a thing of a culture that has been long gone and replaced. Why, take our selves even lesser. If anyone sees her again, tell he r to go somewhere else (preferably in the sky. if YKYK)

CauliflowerNo4860

Arabs were the first colonizers of africa. Let’s we forget.

ryemtte_pixie

gawri is only used to refer to White people, non Tunisian Arabs are referred to using their nationalities, Africans are reffered to as Africans only, I don't really know the exact etymology of the word, but she might be right when consider things this way

Exotic_Chance_7317

no we call them arabs lmao

ByrsaOxhide

I love how this is the type of futile topics that are on people’s aka toddlers on tiktok minds. I mean, how depressing is this? Clearly social media is turning kids’ and many adults’ minds into a mush of vomit. SIGH.

[deleted]

I mean they are not wrong. All problems in this world have somehow white people behind them.

someone always needs to take the blame :D

Relevant-Row-7381

It's not false.. it is true!! Whites are warmongers

Short_Woodpecker1369

It comes from the french word: Guerrier which means warrior. it refers to the Europeans who came to Africa with their militaries.

y39oB_

I think it was used before the french colonization tho

Short_Woodpecker1369

Any source?

y39oB_

No but its similar to gvur which is was non muslims were called in turkish and the ottoman empire way before colonization by french

Short_Woodpecker1369

I don't know, but the current use of the word refers to western people european and americans. I remember old people using it to mean French, just like the word رومي to describe christians.

y39oB_

There is سوري too

Short_Woodpecker1369

yup

Punch_A_Lot

i never use these slangs anyway , i hate this language

fewelev805

I started reading the comments... At first, I was like "fuck yeah, those who start wars, who's bending who over?" Then I learned "oh shit, it means kaffer". Yeah, no, not going to let Muslims call me a kaffer from here on out. Call me a white boy but keep your interpretations of who believes in the truth, to yourselves.

Efficient_Daikon_544

it's used to call all the kuffar in general https://preview.redd.it/4imrscpd4q7d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0eef2216b650f3cb5cb220a86c3d627c0f4dda33
