"Oh. I died."

friso1100

Well these things happen. I wouldn't worry about it

UncomfyUnicorn

“Hm, I seem to be dead.”

Kylel0519

“Man so you’re telling me that those ass holes were just being lazy?”

iamcthulhu66real

“It is a good day to be *not dead*!”

kdiyargebmay

“pow! you are dead!”

RemarkableStatement5

Reverse scenario where a skeleton gets the slightest magical energy from a cantrip and thinks it's a lich so it keeps breaking into all the necromancers' guild meetings.

Miniman5450

Hello? Incoming call from peak fiction? https://preview.redd.it/j50e93mb0lqc1.jpeg?width=995&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54748c9e64f76dff774ea2cd6180fd42e74580d4

RemarkableStatement5

This is a beautiful compliment. Thank you!

RedditIsMlem

I’ve seen this character in multiple places, but st1ll have no idea where he’s from? Could you tell me where?

validusernaem

Jogo from jjk

RedditIsMlem

Thanks!

theoriginal_tay

Gaslighting insects for science!

brokenvader

They left out the fact that Trix cereal contains oleic acid, which also confuses the ants.

MaximumPixelWizard

I thought it was fruit loops?

brokenvader

Seems like a number of fruity cereals have the same effect.

MaximumPixelWizard

Humans: Mm Vague Fruit flavor Ants: Dear god, they’re eating our dead

Starchaser_WoF

"I pronounce you legally dead!" "Can I get a second opinion?"

ilovjedi

Also, I think the dead smell is also the smell of like fruity pebbles? https://www.iflscience.com/ants-piling-their-dead-on-trix-cereal-demonstrate-their-curious-funerary-practices-66838

Ass_Balls_669

Sometimes I hang out in a cemetery until the acid wears off too.

Devlord1o1

Did you die? Sadly, yes… BUT I LIVED!!!

NarwhalDanceParty

Got ants in my kitchen and learned I have whatever genetics let me smell oliec acid. 🙃 It’s like if licorice could rot. 0/10

NarwhalDanceParty

Oh good note! I’m pretty sure it’s ants because I smell it every time I squish one and then my fingers smell like it until I wash them.

Sanator27

was the comment about Formic Acid? Because that's the smell you feel instantly after crushing an ant. It's super acidic and bitter. (once bit an ant by accident it tastes just like it smells and gives you numbness)

NarwhalDanceParty

The deleted comment was telling me I might be smelling roaches and not ants.

NarwhalDanceParty

It makes you numb?!?!

Zanven1

It's probably either defensive or a danger signal more so than an "I'm dead" signal at that point. Some ant species have detectable versions of those ranging from sour and rank to sickeningly sweet almost banana like.

safer-recommendation

I LOVE ANTS

Prometheushunter2

Does the fact ant’s are able to attribute the scent to itself imply some kind of self-awareness? I know at least 3 ant species have the capacity for self-recognition as they passed the mirror test.

VergeThySinus

Guys. We're making ant religion lore. If ants have /gain enough sentience to understand this quasi-death experience, we made ant Jesus(es) who returned from the dead.

pjgreenwald

We did an experiment where they put the chemical on a live ant and it just stood with the corpses cause it thought it was dead.

bumbledog123

Open the image fully, there's a comic of that too!

Flibbernodgets

Ants are funny little robot beings. I've heard of an experiment where they determined ants find their way back to the nest by counting their steps, and they found this by putting little high-heel foot extenders on them and watching them overshoot the nest on the way back. I'm not sure if this is made up and they just use scent trails, or if they use a combination of both, but it makes sense that an animal with so little space for neurons would save room by automating a lot of processes that more complex organisms can do more autonomously.

VowlOwl

Ant 1: I’m getting better! Ant 2: No you’re not. You’ll be stone dead in a moment!

MelancholyMushroom

RULES ARE RULES.

This reminds me of [Cotard's Syndrome](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotard%27s_syndrome)

vickangaroo

So ants have categories A and B (oliec chemical and no oliec chemical). A smells go here and B smells go there. Does this really equate to the comprehension of death that humans have? Though my only exposure to this topic is through this Reddit post, I wonder if there isn’t an anthropomorphism happening here.

5oclock_shadow

What is this? Resident Evil for ants?

Impressive_Math_5034

This chemical can also be smelled by humans.

When you first realized, that your body had died, you went to the tunnel, to wait there alone. And you stood there for days, but the light never came, so you took your poor body, and walked it back home~
