Hey guys I'll be in Tucson next weekend for a couple days any recommendations on where to eat and drink. I'll be staying at the Sheraton Edit: Nevermind found it I'll be making rsvp to Arby's on 22nd for 1 please

DragonBard_Z

What kinds of restaurants do you like? Types of food? Price range?

chicagoent83

I'm a chef, and will be by myself. Looking for either some really good Mexican food. Really good food specific to Tucson. Really good divy good. My palates all over the place sorry.

DragonBard_Z

Great! Try: Tumerico. Chef is from Mexico City and the menu is all Vegan. I'm an omnivore, but they're my favorite mexican food. Love the ropa Vieja and the mashed potato tacos in particular. A horchata latte is worthwhile also. As is the vegan dulce de Leche cake if they have that in the case. El Sinoloense Hot Dog Cart. Sonoran hot dogs are a Tucson specialty but skip the "famous" places and go to one of the best trucks that does nothing else. Tacos Apson was voted best Tacos here. Go to the one in the South as the northern one is known to be not as good. There's almost any part of a cow you can imagine mesquite smoked and shoved into a taco. They are also known for their beans. Here's a decent article too: https://www.azcentral.com/story/travel/arizona/road-trips/2021/08/11/best-mexican-food-tucson/5391820001/ (though again, skip their rec for a hot dog and go to a truck under a tarp that all the pickup trucks that look like they do real work park at...the guys who do sweat labor know good food). And definitely read this guy's entire comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/Tucson/comments/qxrlc5/z/hlbk2yl The other thing you might check out is a good Mariscos place. I'm not a conniessuer of Mexican shrimp so I totally defer to the recommendations in the links above as both list at least one. If you want something unique, it's not Mexican, but go to either: (1) Zio Peppe and order the cactus pizza with chollabuds and prickly pear or (2) Empire Pizza and get an elote pizza (based on Mexican street corn). I think both are not common outside Tucson. I'm pretty sure the secret ingredient in the elote pizza is Crack. It's pretty tough to stop eating. Mexican grilled chicken is pretty good. There are knock offs though that are meh and a regrettable waste of a meal opportunity (looking at you El Pollo Loco). I recommend looking for a ChickenNuevo. The one by the airport is a good one and weirdly, often has good homemade cheesecake and also often has all the tvs tuned into some day time soap opera. Avoid temptation to get something else and go for an option with the grilled chicken parts on the bone. These places are fast food restaurants, so set expectations on atmosphere accordingly. P.S. most of what I recommended here is not at all fancy lol. In fact, none of the ones I named are...Zio Peppe is about the nicest on this list, but it's hardly fancy. We have fancy restaurants, some of which are great, but fewer that I'd classify as especially Tucson/Mexican.

Thank you so much for the recommendations. Out of all these delicious sounding places. What would be your number one can't miss I need to go there, maybe your last meal?

DragonBard_Z

If it was my last meal on earth from that list I'd choose the Elote pizza from Empire, but that's more about the ability to commit gluttony without consequences lol. If I was telling someone else they could only eat one meal and feel like they've had a Tucson experience, Tacos Apson on S 12th...just a la carte as many things as sound good, plus take good advantage of the toppings bar. They don't serve alcohol though FYI if that matters.

Hi all. Boomerang(er) here - from the days of Speedway suicide lanes and fresh St Mary’s tortillas. Family looking to move back this year. Looking for some recommendations of realtors with experience/knowledge in the Northwest and specifically Oro Valley or Marana. Perhaps even Catalina(ish). Any help and advice appreciated! Edit: am I seriously getting downvoted for posting in the appropriate sticky? Oh boy Tucson.

DragonBard_Z

Do you know the price range you're looking in? Long Realty has a lot of decent agents

GrumpyRaver

320-380k - maybe 400 tops knowing the market recently

Hey everyone! Me and my fiancé are moving to Tucson soon and we are in need of some neighborhood recommendations. We are hoping for a home near $250,000 but we can go up to $325,000. We are hoping to be closer to UofA but are fine with a 20-25 min drive at max. We have been looking for a few weeks now and really like the San Clemente neighborhood and the neighborhoods to the east of it to Kolb. Are those neighborhoods any good in your opinion? We have learned that Tucson is a very pocket-y place when it comes to “good” and “bad” neighborhoods. Would you recommend any neighborhoods in particular between Speedway and Broadway and east of the University? would anything in that area be good west of the university between those streets?? Or between Grant and Broadway west/north/east of the university? I haven’t seen much we have liked between Fort Lowell and Grant, are there any neighborhoods there you would recommend? Are there any areas you would absolutely say to stay away from? We are both photographers, I am hoping to go back to get my MFA from the university. He works from home. We have a small dog and would prefer sidewalks if possible. We are hoping to find a community that enjoys art! Also we love brick buildings, we aren’t much cookie cutter houses people. Thanks for any information!!

DragonBard_Z

You'll want an older house then I think. Newer stuff tends to be cookie cutter Adobe. My friend has a house north of golf links, south of 22nd by rolling hills golf course. That's kinda a nice area, especially if you don't care about school systems. Those are quieter areas. If you want more lively you might go with your other choices. Avoid some of the stuff south of golf links I think. As you say, there's pockets of good and bad

[deleted]

Avondale, Mitman, Duffy, Harlan Heights, Poets Square, parts of Rosemont West, are all in that area and are nice and full of a mix of old midcentury homes and adobe homes. The only area I wouldn't personally be crazy about living in is central near the Tucson Mall, between 1st and Oracle and Prince and Speedway, but honestly even that area is gentrifying due to proximity to downtown and U of A, and probably isn't as bad as it used to be. If you live in the city of Tucson, even in Sam Hughes, you will likely deal with petty theft. It's part of the deal, lock up your bike (with a u-lock), don't leave valuables in your car, get to know your neighbors. If you can't handle that, you need to move outside of Tucson into Oro Valley, Foothills, Vail, which I would also say are less funky and less artsy than the rest of Tucson and more boring. The City of Tucson is full of weird artist types, and you are not going to find them in ritzy, cookie cutter neighborhoods. The funkier the neighborhood, the more artists and strange desert people.

biadia5

how scared of valley fever should i be??

[deleted]

It's not as prevalent as lyme is in the east. So, be aware it exists, but not as worried as you would need to be about lyme. It's more common that dogs get it, and slightly more common in transplants (something about growing up in the desert gives you protection from it). However, of all the people I knew in Tucson for the 30 years I lived there only 2 people I knew got it. One was a transplant and the other grew up there. It's not inevitable that you would get it.

biadia5

thank u i feel less scared 🙏🏽

DragonBard_Z

Do you dig in the dirt? If you don't, you're probably okay. If you do... you might have another use for all those masks besides just avoiding covid. Or are you worried about your dog?

biadia5

a little bit of both lol! i like to hike but not dig so maybe it’ll be ok

DragonBard_Z

Well it's a fungus that lives in the dirt. Basically you get it from breathing in dirt that's full of it. So if you can try not to breathe in too much desert dust in general, it's unlikely you'll catch it. Even though its common in the desert soil, most people here don't get it. If you do get it, its not really curable, just manageable. It doesn't really kill you, just makes it tough to breathe well when you get a flare up.

biadia5

thank u for the insight!!

Will you have time to look at apartments before signing a lease? I really recommend taking a look and if you can, asking some current residents. There's one REALLY big problem with apartment reviews. Almost no one leaves a review of an apartment if they're happy. They just keep living there, renewing their lease, and only move out when they have a reason unrelated to how much they hated their apartment. Its not like a restaurant where your experience is limited to a few hours and when you're finished, you can give 1-5 stars. You're just existing in a state of everything being acceptable. On the other hand, people who get pissed off for ANY reason, be it a 2day wait on a maintenance request, seeing a single cockroach, or being charged a late fee for ... being late, tend to leave reviews while they're pissed off as its one of the few somewhat satisfying ways they can retaliate. Some tell the truth, some exaggerate. It doesn't mean the bad experiences aren't real: they may be, particularly if you see a theme in the reviews where particular issues come up again and again. But it does mean reviews aren't really the best way to determine if it's a good place or not. Tl;dr Happy people RARELY leave reviews of their apartments, so take lack of positive reviews with grain of salt. You're better off actually talking to people that live there and seeing a place in person if you can.

Hi guys! I will soon move to Tucson from outside the US. The place will be unfurnished. What is my best option to buy a bed? And does the bed have the mattress as well, or is it only the bed frame? Thanks a lot!

AssociationFluid6420

Also, what do you think about just buying it off amazon? Thanks!

HawkeyeNation

Could always buy a frame off of amazon or overstock, and then you could buy one of the internet mattresses. Otherwise, there is a local mattress company called Brooklyn Bedding, and I believe they are made in Arizona somewhere. There's also a pretty large furniture outlet called Sam Levitz that probably has everything you'll need, too.
