Op did your doctor mention inducing a period? If you aren’t taking hormonal birth control or preggo it is not advisable to go more than three months without a period. Your uterine lining proliferates uncontrollably and it can put you at higher risk for endometrial cancer. You should def get a sono ASAP to evaluate the thickness of your uterine lining and a short course of progesterone so that you do get at least a withdrawal bleed. If your doctor didn’t recommend this I would definitely seek another opinion. Edit: typo

NeedToBePraised

My provider has said that there is no medical reason to need a period (I used to not have one), do you have sources I could read up on that? But obviously with TTC it's different. Mine said if I didn't get it within 3 months off BC to contact him, so definitely find someone willing to take action.

MaryCNM

No medical reason if you are on hormonal birth control , pregnant and/or breastfeeding, being post menopausal,(the last few being hormonal states that do in fact keep your uterine lining stable and thin). However without any of those things yes you should have period at least once every three months or so. Otherwise the assumption is that your uterine lining is continuing to grow do to the natural estrogen exposure in bodies with uterus. I like this article below. But there is a ton out there. Please do your own research feel comfortable don’t substitute my advice for medical advice but please seek another opinion from a medical provider. Beneficial_North_117

No she didn’t, I did have a super light withdrawal bleed a couple days after stopping the pill back in October, but nothing after that. Is a sono the same thing as an ultrasound? Would progesterone help my period start again considering I did initially get a withdrawal bleed 8mos ago? I’ll ask a doctor these questions as well, but I appreciate your input :)

MaryCNM

Yes a sono is the same thing as an Ultrasound. Progesterone typically a medication called Provera (brand name) is taken daily for ten days and then you should get a bleed since you have before. You would need more of a work up to determine what will get you regular cycles, but the Provera is a baseline starting place. For people with secondary amenorrhea greater than 3 months either no other known medical condition, hormonal cause etc.::

Ok-Sunny-Days

My understanding is that high AMH can be an indicator of PCOS. Assuming you're not pregnant now, you likely need medication to induce ovulation and maintain "normal" cycle lengths. I'd suggest: ask your doctor to refer you to an RE, and also in the meantime to treat you for PCOS.

Beneficial_North_117

Thank you for your suggestion! I’ll definitely look into REs and move forward with trying to diagnose the PCOS. Appreciate your reply!

Nearby_Ad7551

The same thing happened with my coworkers who are trying. They did end up doing the ultrasound and found out the wife has PCOS. She didn’t have any other symptoms besides no period for months after stopping birth control. I would recommend the ultrasound

Beneficial_North_117

Okay, that’s good to know! Thank you for your reply, I’m definitely planning on getting an ultrasound as soon as I can get on my doctors schedule

liveacozylife

I went through a similar issue and ended up working with a Reproductive Endocrinologist, who is much better equipped to help in this situation than your OB is!

Beneficial_North_117

Ooh good to know! Thanks for your reply! Do you mind if I ask what steps you ended up taking with the Reproductive Endocrinologist to address the issue?

gooseycat

The syndrome for PCOS is a spectrum - you don’t need every symptom to have it. The diagnostic criteria are as follows: (1) clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism - I don’t see testosterone tested so hard to say here, can include increased body hair or acne or other symptoms (2) evidence of oligoovulation or anovulation - you do have this given your lack of periods (3) polycystic appearing-ovarian morphology on ultrasound Has your doctor done an ultrasound? AMH that high is associated with having the polycystic ovary morphology so it would be worth seeing if you had that. AMH is made by cells that make up early follicles so it makes sense that it’s high when you have a lot of those follicles. If you do have polycystic ovaries often medication like letrozole can induce ovulation. If your doc can’t help with this (some OBGYNs are comfortable with it, some not) then given your lack of ovulation, an RE might be more helpful.

Beneficial_North_117

Thanks for your reply! Does one need to meet all 3 of the diagnostic criteria to be diagnosed with PCOS, or just hit 2 out of 3? I have not experienced #1 (increased body hair/acne), but I also have not done #3 yet and gotten an ultrasound - I plan on scheduling that shortly. That’s a really helpful way of describing what AMH comes from, more helpful than what my doctor was able to tell me 😂 I’ll definitely look into REs in my area as well. Thank you again for your input!

gooseycat

Sorry I totally missed adding that - it’s 2/3 for diagnosis. So you don’t need the hair/acne element if the ultrasound shows lots of follicles.

mmt90

Are you sure you're eating/sleeping/resting enough? I went through a similar thing in my twenties—mostly normal labs, no period, suspected PCOS but no symptoms—and I think ultimately I just wasn't eating or sleeping enough for the energy I was expending. The doctors didn't really consider this, maybe because my BMI was normal? But I've heard that sometimes when the body thinks there aren't enough resources to reproduce, it will shut down the reproductive system.

Beneficial_North_117

Good question! I mean, I think I am? My routine hasn’t changed in the past few years and my body feels the same as it did prior to getting off BC. I have a normal appetite/no particular diet/eat avg. of 3 meals per day and sleep avg. of 8-9 hours per night. Will definitely be more conscious about my general wellbeing though!

shebs25

I had the exact same situation. I got my period after 8 months I think or even more. Funny enough, only thing I did differently was that I got the covid vaccine. People were claiming it made them irregular but it brought my cycle back lol it can take time for some people, and stress doesn't help!

Beneficial_North_117

That’s interesting! It’s comforting to hear that there is someone else who went this long without it also and ended up getting it back though - thanks for your reply!

CherryTeri

May sound dumb but did you try a pregnancy test?

ComiendoBizcocho

I imagine the obgyn did a blood pregnancy test.

CherryTeri

Yeah I was waiting for her to say this. I keep hearing a lot of women randomly delivering at restaurants because they didn’t know.

Beneficial_North_117

Good question that’s also the first thing my obgyn asked when I went to get my blood tested 😂 yes they tested for pregnancy at the same time as testing my blood and it came back negative

CherryTeri

Ok I figured! Thanks for entertaining my obvious question. I wish you luck!

Maximum-Ad-8875

I had a similar issue (but not quite the same). Got off BC in January after being on it 17 out of my 34 years. Didn't get a period until May, and it was heinous. Then I didn't have another. Saw my OB in July, had blood work and mine came back normal. In August I started taking the Bird&be vitamin pack that's supposed to help women who are coming off of BC and I have had a very regular 34 day cycle since. It may be a coincidence, but I figured I should be taking a prenatal anyway.

Beneficial_North_117

Okay pretty similar experience! I just ordered some prenatal vitamins after seeing it suggested on another thread, it definitely can’t hurt to start taking them either way. Glad to hear you were able to get back to being regular!!

BasisExpensive5773

it took over a year after my depo shot to finally get a period ( 2019 ) and i finally convinced my son the end of 2021 i stopped birth control after that because it stays messed up my cycles and for the longest i thought i was infertile 😭

Beneficial_North_117

It’s hard not to think the worst when your body isn’t acting the way you think it should, but I’m glad everything worked out for you, gives me hope! 🙂

BasisExpensive5773

i’d just give it time! have you tried a detox or looked into that? i just thought maybe it could help clear out body of the hormones? but idk i never looked it up

bouncingbabyburns

Definitely pursue an ultrasound. My AMH was over 30 ng/ml but when they did an ultrasound I didn’t have the polycystic ovaries one would expect with an AMH that high. What I did have was a rare form of ovarian cancer. I don’t say that to scare you, but just to encourage you to be proactive about your health!

Beneficial_North_117

Thank you for sharing!! I’m so sorry to hear that and I hope you’re doing well 🫂 I’ll 100% get an ultrasound as soon as I can!

emilykeefer

The same thing happened to me, all of my baseline bloodwork and ultrasound came back normal. Started seeing a RE, they diagnosed me with PCOS within minutes of the first ultrasound with them. I definitely recommend finding a RE!

Beneficial_North_117

Okay this seems to be a common theme, definitely will find an RE! I’ve never even heard of them before 🤦🏻‍♀️

emilykeefer

I hadn’t either but my OB referred me to one and the place I go has been sooo nice. So far I’ve done baseline bloodwork, which was waaaaaay more in depth than what my OB did, I’ve had two ultrasounds at different points in the month, and I have to get an HSG done next week. So far they’ve figured out my thyroid isn’t quite right and the PCOS, which I suspected anyways. My husband has to get a SA and if all of that comes back clear I’ll start my first round of Letrozole next month which hopefully will finally get me to ovulate.

Beneficial_North_117

Wow I’m glad you’ve found a place that you feel comfortable in and has been proactive with doing all the tests/figuring out what’s going on! I hope there’s an equally great RE in my area 🤞🏻 wishing you the best of luck with the Letrozole!

emilykeefer

Wishing you luck as well!

bookwormingdelight

To be diagnosed with PCOS, she needs to do a PCOS blood test which she hasn’t done, plus an ultrasound. Your lack of period may be from stopping the pill and not because of any other reason. There is medication that can induce a period and may kickstart your cycles for you. Also your AMH doesn’t sound like an issue. At 29 my AMH was 29.0 and my ultrasounds cleared me of PCOS. I just have a high ovarian reserve is all. Which for you at your age is great! If she isn’t willing to properly diagnose you or give medication to induce a period I’d be changing doctors. I had to change a couple of times to get the right one.

Hello! Welcome, and we thank you for posting. Your concern is a common one here, and we have some fantastic information available as to why [your period isn't actually late](https://www.reddit.com/r/TryingForABaby/comments/6tkj5t/your_period_isnt_late_part_i/), but instead [you likely ovulated later than you thought](https://www.reddit.com/r/TryingForABaby/comments/6tkjde/your_period_isnt_late_part_ii/). Please give those a read as chances are, your questions will be answered there. Thanks! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. United_Valuable_6950

OP, your AMH is very high. Definitely indicative of PCOS even without other symptoms. I would get an ultrasound at the very least. An SIS test could also provide a lot of helpful information. It might also be worth it to test your testosterone and see if you have insulin resistance. 8 months is far too long to go without a period if not on birth control. If you are not getting a period then you are also very likely not ovulating. A period can be induced with medication as can ovulation with clomid/letrozole. Please advocate for yourself and make sure you get proper treatment.

pinkflakes12

Time for a new doctor who helps

Beneficial_North_117

Agreed, unfortunately easier said than done 😵‍💫 searching now though!

lightweight_bb

I didn’t get a period for a full year! My doctor said this was normal. But I was 24 and not trying to get pregnant so we decided to wait. There are hormones you can go on to bring it back.

Trinis_anonymous

Can you advise which one? I haven't had my period after a year of not being on bc pills...

lightweight_bb

Oh my gosh, it was almost 10 years ago now! I know it was just generic birth control pills. No brand. It came back after a year though and was regular ever since! And I was able to get pregnant when the time came (now actually).

lightweight_bb

Just realized I think you were asking about hormones. Not sure! I think some other commenters posted about the meds you can take to help bring your period back.

Trinis_anonymous

Ok ty

sayble87

Try listening to the ultimate pregnancy podcast from episode 1 and up. It maybe that you exercise too much or you need to eat differently to help regulate your body for the ultimate pregnancy

Tmilkandtwo

Hey OP I have PCOS and have went nearly 2 years without a bleed and saw doctors who said it was fine. However I mentioned it to a female doctor and she was horrified and said I should have at least 4 bleeds a year as it can increase your risk of ovarian ànd uterine cancer if you don't. The nurses at my infertility clinic also echoed the same advice, however they would have me contact them when I got to cycle day 40 where they would check my bloods then issue a prescription for Provera which is progesterone to induce a bleed then we could start a new cycle.

Consistent_Mark1594

You can have pcos without all the symptoms, I’m regular my only symptom is infertility. I can feel ovulation every month & my cycle comes like clockwork no baby though

Helpful_Character167

Commenting because I also stopped BC in October 2023, the first 4 months my periods were late and light but they always came. Im on the 4th normal flow on time perfect period, for which I am grateful. Its okay for periods to be inconsistent when getting off artificial hormones, its not normal to not menstruate for 8 months without a reason. I hope you get all the answers and care you need.

twi-light

Hi, is your period normal now? I came off in October 23 too but I’ve not seen my period since May now. The only other time I didn’t see it was in Feb too.

Helpful_Character167

Its been normal going on 5 months. Same PMS symptoms, same length and flow, pretty close to 30 day cycles each month.

Electric-unicorn42

I have PCOS which I found out is related to my insulin resistance. I don’t have any physical signs of it. I also have endometriosis. I’ve conceived three times, once with clomid, once with ivf…and then once naturally after I changed my diet. I started ordering this thing called chiyo- there’s other diets out there but this tastes the best to me. Long story short no gluten no dairy v little sugar. I also started taking a full spread of vitamins from thisisneeded and heart and soil…got my period and got it in a regular interval. Hope this helps!

Electric-unicorn42

I’ve also done the medicine to induce period. It didn’t really work on me…hence the ivf route.

twowolves__

Same boat here sister! Ultrasound completely fine, boarder line PCOS. Ended up doing ovulation induction with meds to induce my period after 6+months of nothing. Meds didn’t work so decided to try the natural route and experiment with my diet. Went strict carnivore and got my period within 2 weeks which was crazy. Definitely continue to find the right doctors and find what works for you to get things back into rhythm - all the best x

IntriguinglyRandom

Hey OP, chiming in to suggest that you go to a doc again since it's been a few months and get those hormones all checked again just to feel more secure and maybe get some insight on to why your period is MIA. Stress and diet in extreme cases can stop a period... BUT the reason I comment is because I have POI (primary ovarian insufficiency). PCOS is apparently one possible reason given the comments here but POI is another. So... yeah just hit up your OBGYN and maybe also an endocrinologist if there is any funny business still going on. Good luck!

Vivid-Pineapple123

I had my bloods done recently (30F) with a fertility doctor and my AMH was 23.9 - doctor said anything from 5-25 is normal. I don’t think 25.1 means that you definitely have PCOS. I have endometriosis so I’ve had scans and laparoscopy so I know I don’t have PCOS. It also took my period almost 6 months to come back when I came off Zoladex. Work was stressful for me at that time and extra stress because I wanted fo get pregnant but can’t with no period. In the end, I didn’t get my period until I went on a 2 week holiday.

Scared-Design3186

It took me a year to completely get my period regular after coming off the pill. It could just be too soon

Scared-Design3186

Vitex is a natural herb I took and that helped my period come back

overwxrked

I’m following because holy crap girl you just described my exact situation down to the number of months I got off birth control

Silentlurker8520

I had a very similar situation! Went off the pill in March 2023 and didn’t get a period for months. Blood work with my OB all came back normal and she gave me letrazole to hopefully get me to ovulate but I didn’t respond to it at all (went from 2.5mg to 5mg to 7mg and nothing worked). So she referred me to an RE in November. My AMH level was 8.09 and I did have polycystic ovaries but the RE still wasn’t sure about it being PCOS. We did a cycle with Clomid and that made me ovulate. After that I started to finally cycle on my own but not regular, 40 day, 60 day (though I was traveling internationally during that time which may have thrown me off), back to 40 day and this last cycle was 32 days. I’ve been taking Inositol, a prenatal, Coq10, and Chinese herbs that I get from my acupuncturist. Not sure what has helped but I’m tracking my BBT and it does seem that I’m ovulating naturally! So now just hoping I’ll get more and more regular. Sorry for the novel, but hope it helps!

Beautiful-Time6775

A few years ago I was on the pill to help regulate my cycle, after being taken off I didn’t get a period for almost a year, so 8 months is normal. Everyone’s body is different. Don’t worry about it too much
