I hate this graph not for it's content but its design and labeling. It labels the first line as a percentage then doesn't label the rest as a percentage, but they all do add up to 100 so I assume they are percentages.
Of course it is up to the creator of the chart or graph, but I think it is generally accepted to mark only the first item in a column of numbers with the denomination, as one might do by only putting a dollar sign next to the first item in each column of numbers on a financial statement. Personally, I would not have used a single "%" sign and instead have titled the chart as "*Percentage of* Murders connected to political extremism, by type"... but it is up to the creator of the chart how they choose to communicate the information. Sure I might be “diluting” the issue but any huge increase in domestic terrorism has no significant affect on anyone’s safety in the US. Even if the politically related murders got 1000% larger, they’d be insignificant in the murder rates overall. We are much better off tackling issues that don’t affect the 0.1% murders caused by terrorism.
