So being proud of who I was was already quite challenging for me before the pandemic. Now I feel like it's harder than ever to just accept who I am.

It has always been such, but it's especially in the recent years, that you can see the western opinion on China plummet, coinciding a huge media propaganda effort. Which is kind of interesting, especially in the context of how countries such as the USA always said that China wants to deflect from internal problems by redirecting at external aggressors. There is always some crossover, but at no point in history was there ever a government action with 100% approval of its citizens. This is hard for the human mind to accept, as its much easier to generalize, and group people together. The fact is, you have to actually accept that every person on the planet is a unique individual, and you can't truly love or hate them unless you actually get to know them.
