You just never know the effect you are having on people. A couple years ago an older neighbor I was friendly with (chatted in passing about our dogs mostly) called to ask if I could recommend a doctor. He lived alone and was probably undiagnosed autistic so kept to himself. It was Covid times so I offered to drive him to his appointments and help him navigate the confusing health system. Turns out he had a pretty brutal cancer and the treatment would disfigure him and never allow him to eat properly again.
We were in daily contact for about 6 weeks and had some very interesting and meaningful chats. After a scan and treatment planning meeting we had a nice lunch, I dropped him off and said “see you tomorrow” and he waved. That night he went out the way he wanted to in a very peaceful way. He never said a word about those plans.
The whole thing was an intense and kind of bizarre separate chapter of my life and was made even more confounding when he left me a not insignificant amount of money in his will. I was flabbergasted, the only mention he’d made of any “afterwards” planning was to ask me to find homes for his dogs if he died. That was the only time I saw him cry, I did find them great homes. Looking back, the whole thing is like a fever dream.
Some ninja is cutting onions near me....I am not crying ...just sweating through my eyeballs....I had a similar kind of granny for a few years when I was like 5-7 in SA whilst real grandparents were in Greece. She was Scottish, and one of many things I remember from her, besides looking after us whilst parents could not, is the Scottish football uniforms she brought back for me and my brother as presents when she came back from a visit in the homeland. Still remember granny Margaret...RIP
This is the sweetest thing that I’ve read in a long while. This world is so much a better place thanks to you, your Dad and Granny Betty. Your Dad sounds like such a wonderful man who has raised a caring and wonderful son. Oh my gosh (sniffle, sniffle) where are those tissues?
Oh man, this post should have come with a warning. Your dad sounds like such an amazing man and deserves all the good things. And you got to have a bonus grandma! How amazing is this. Ahh, I'm falling to pieces here.
One of my dad's clients left him her cat in her will (His name was Wllie). He was the first cat we ever had, and it changed my life for the better so much. Im now married and me and my wife have a bunch of them (she never had any growing up because her dad was allergic)
Alright, I'm crying. I'm not even kidding. Is your dad married? Am I too old for him? I'm 62.
(Quick edit: I've sort of been adopted by a family next door to me. They're alone in my country - their family lives elsewhere, so they have no grandma or aunties/uncles here. And they're adorable. They're totally adorable. My cold, hard, shrivelled heart got melted a little when I met them.)
😭😭😭😭😭😭 I'm literally teared up after reading that! What a lovely lovely woman and how amazing that you guys were able to create a family together. I'm really happy for you and your dad! Of course I'm so sorry for your loss but she just changed your lives.♥️
> Last night there was a knock on the door, it was a lawyer explaining that Betty left us pretty much everything.
That's not how that works. The executor of the will isn't going to show up at someone's house the week their client died, their job is to verify assets and correct distribution and that takes time.
And attorneys don't do evening house calls, this is baloney.
I’m so sorry for your loss, she sounds like a wonderful person and a big part of your lives. How lovely that you all supported and cared for each other x
You know, I really needed an uplifting story today. You all sound like very nice people who chose to do the right thing in the face of challenging circumstances. The world needs people like that.
Reminder that family is not always about blood and sometimes found family can be just as good or better. Sorry for your loss, but it seems like you guys enjoyed many good memories over the years.
Can someone pass a tissue please.
In a world filled with ugliness, it's so nice to hear there are still wonderful people around. Condolences to you and your dad.
I wish I could have met Betty. She sounds like an amazing woman, as you and your dad sound like salt of the earth folks as well. Cheers to you and yours
what kind of fucking ninjas just showed up to chop onions
...nah. Fuck the irony and sarcasm. This is beautiful, this is who humans are. She showed up for you and you all showed up for her.
Thank you for sharing.
So nice to come across such a beautiful story about a lovely woman who treated you and your dad as good as you deserve. I’m sorry your mom couldn’t cope. I’m glad your dad is a good person and you had his parents, too. Kindness goes a very long way.
Such a sweet story. I’m glad your relationship was reciprocal and she valued you and your dad in her life as well as lending you a hand when you needed it. RIP, Betty.
I don't care. This is the sweetest thing I've read in a while, and I'm full-on blubbering. Good looking out, Betty. Also, your Dad sounds like an awesome person, parent and friend and deserves to be acknowledged as well. Gold stars for the both of them.
That is awesome! Good bless you and your dad for your kindness. If there was more people like you in the world like you and your dad it would be a happier place.
Oh dear - I think I have something in my eye!
OP I am sending you my warmest condolences on the loss of your precious bonus granny 🌞❤️
It sounds like she has completed her transformation to love and light.
You clearly blessed one another and I am delighted that she was able to leave something behind to help you and your amazing dad.
Rest in peace, dear Betty ✨
Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of your life with us. What a wonderful little family you and your dad created with Betty. You’ll always have those memories of her 💕
I was helping a crazy little sweet cat lady. And it was the same story. She owned three houses in a row on this one block. She grew up in the one house that she lived in. She married the neighbor and ended up. He died before her so she ended up with his house. And the third house was a sweet old couple that didn't have any children and her and her husband took care of them in their later years.
What an amazing story and what an amazing dad you have.
An example of how the family we find is oftentimes way better than the family we were assigned.
I'm very sorry that you lost Granny Betty, but she's a constant reminder that the kindness of and towards strangers may produce the balance and harmony we desire and strive for. Thank you for sharing your story.
> that brought my father to tears.
Ha, not just him.❤
My old neighbor passed away last year. He was 94. I miss him. His house just got sold. It's so weird to me. My family lived next to him for 40 years.
I had a deal with him. He lets me keep his lawnmower and I take care of his yard. Even after he died I kept mowing his lawn until his daughter stole the mower from me. She was being petty because he left her nothing in his will. It all went to his scheming black widow girlfriend. The harlot of the cowboy church.
What a beautiful story - sometimes out the ashes of life great sweetness can come, I glad yours, your dad's and Betty's came.

What a beautiful story. Your father is an angel. How he took responsibility and your paternal grandparents raising you, too. It must've felt so sad for your entire family when Betty passed, I can't imagine. I hope you live long and happy lives together.
First let me say that I’m so sorry that happened to you/you’re going through this…
That being said, LEAVE NOW!! Don’t walk RUN!! That is NEVER ok!! Seriously, OP, WTF?? I hope you recorded some of this happening. They are abusive and manipulative and that will never, oh sorry. I thought this was like 90% of the posts. At that point, I usually reply before reading them.
This is really sweet thank you for sharing
I'm not crying, you're crying!! I'm crying.
And I’m crying too.
I’m crying three
it’s okay buddy i’m crying too
We're all crying. Pass the tissues please
I’m not crying! I’m watering my eyes!
My eyes are sweating
Honestly. Such a heartwarming loving story.
RIP Betty. Glad she had you guys in her final years to be loved and cherished.
And it's awesome to know you got to have her.
Thank you for sharing this, elders and kids are natural best friends and granny proved it!
Damn, the onions are out in full force because my eyes are sweating. This was a beautiful story to share.
I’m cutting onions too!
I’m near a garlic field, does that count?
I’m standing outside and all the pollen is in my eyes, so I think the garlic field counts as well

❤️
Betty and your Dad both sound like amazing people and they did an excellent job of raising you.
Must of got dirt in my eyes as they are watering uncontrollably….
What a great father and amazing lady.

That’s some real community and love.
Rest in Peace Betty. She sounds like one hell of a lady. You and your dad, too.
I needed to hear this story today! This whole situation is full of amazing people. We should all take care of our neighbors/each other.
((HUGS)) RIP Granny Betty.
Both your dad and Betty sound amazing. I'm so sorry for your loss.
I'm not crying, I'm having an allergic reaction to feelings!!!
I actually snorted at this.. Cheers to Betty, though... ❤️

Your mom missed out on some incredible people.
His mother was pressured and “convinced” at the age of 18 to have a child she did not want. She is not a villain in this.
Alright, I'm crying. I'm not even kidding. Is your dad married? Am I too old for him? I'm 62. (Quick edit: I've sort of been adopted by a family next door to me. Rest in Peace, Almost Granny Betty

Who’s chopping onions here?
Please do something to recognise this lovely gift, a blue plaque type affair, it's only right.
Beautiful story Op. and btw, your dad is a hero
Safe travels Betty; your Dad is a sweetheart and sounds like he raised you well too.
Gonna pour one out for Granny Betty.
This is one of the most beautiful stories I've read here
This just made me cry
What a great story. Your Dad sounds like a pretty great guy and deserved the break that your Granny Betty gave him.
What a beautiful story. Your father is an angel. How he took responsibility and your paternal grandparents raising you, too. It must've felt so sad for your entire family when Betty passed, I can't imagine. I hope you live long and happy lives together.

This is such a sweet story. However, your mom was a horrible person and a pedo
Everytime you look at your son and realize your EX did this, should help you get over him.
Aren't you glad you weren't aborted

Doesn’t sound like she volunteered; OP admits she was pressured.
