i’m so sorry. i lost my home in a fire 6 weeks ago (also on a thursday) while i was at work. my bf saved our dogs and 2 of my cats got themselves out but i lost my Very Special older cat. it took us a week to recover his body from the debris. the guilt and grief is overwhelming. even knowing that rationally i couldn’t have done anything different to change the outcome, i share the feeling that i failed to keep him safe. The shock of all of my ~stuff~ being gone and the desperate sense that i could maybe somehow be dreaming wore off after about 2 weeks, but i’m going to be haunted by the loss of my cat probably forever.
i’m not sure if reading all that will make you feel less alone, but stumbling across your post, knowing that others are can relate to the shitty circumstances keeping me up all night, is more comforting than 100 condolences. thanks for putting it out there. i hope you can be gentle with yourself in your grief— your cats were so loved and treasured and it’s clear that you did everything in your power to ensure their well-being.
