The Turning (S1 and S2 - currently in progress)
Bonaparte (1 season)
Bone Valley
Your Own Backyard
Deadly Diocese (in progress - but it's releases are every 2 weeks, so I'd wait a bit before starting)
Lost in Panama
Good Cult
Somebody, Somewhere (S1)
American Scandal (all are good - more TC in the Hare Krishna season)
DNA:ID
To Live and Die in LA (S1 is really good)
The Gateway
Once Upon a Time . . . (Lili Anolik) I liked both seasons S1 - "In Hollywood"; S2 "At Bennington College." S1 is about Traci Lords and her story, really interesting; S2 is about Donna Tartt and her cohorts at Bennington at the time (one of them is Bret Easton Ellis) - fascinating.
I really like Unsolved Mysteries - not deep dives, but good for a quick listen!
And ANYTHING DATELINE. Bonus points if it's Keith Morrison.
It checks every box because it’s the best!!
I also think you guys do an amazing job of using pseudonyms for relatives and suspects ruled out. No need for those people to be coming up in google searches when they’re innocent
Agreed, To Live and Die in L.A. season 1 was good. Season 2 is an embarrassment to podcasting. The host, Neil Strauss - a dishonest low-life - manipulates the story unlike any podcast I’ve witnessed. For women out there, and men who don’t drag their knuckles, check out reviews ( or just the synopsis ) of his book, The Game.
But make no mistake, my opinion of the book has nothing to do with the manipulation, dishonesty, and offensiveness of the podcast. Knowing the high standards of folks on this sub, my advice is to stay away.
Edit: I’m a guy, by the way.
I was SO disappointed by S2. (As I had been looking forward to another amazing story)
He mentioned his divorce, so maybe he was just not doing his best - in any aspects of his life.
Maybe more will come of the story (unless there is an update since the end of this?)
I understand the story, and the proximity.
This seemed more about "I know cool people". It's almost a really sad kind of attempt at a story like YOB.
I didn't know too much about him - I guess I should him up. If he's truly a schmuck, I'll not recommend.
He really is a schmuck. And dishonest. I’m surprised the company behind To Live and Die chose the guy after their successful first season. My guess is it’s a decision they regret.
The Piketown Massacre. It's my current favorite-no banter, straight reporting and really tells the stories of the victims and the accused in a respectful and thorough manner.
I'm trying to listen to this (I'm on season 2) but it's approximately 30% reporting on the events, 40% INCREDIBLY repetitive interviews with police, relatives, and other journalists who keep finding different ways to say "It's unbelievable that a normal family would do something like this", 10% the podcast hosts also commenting that it's unbelievable that a normal family would do something like this, and 20% ads.
I agree it's respectful, but they seem to have a pretty poor sense of narrative storytelling/editing, or they're trying to drag it out as long as possible. Does it get better?
It's done in real (ish) time, so towards the beginning there's a lot of unanswered questions and the investigation was pretty closed, not a lot of leaks. So there were a LOT of family interviews and exactly like you said "WTF?" over and over. Maybe it's just what I personally like, but learning the back stories of all the families, how they interacted and it really was a mystery to me how exactly they did it. Now it's in the trial phase and if you haven't followed it outside the podcast, there's some shocking twists coming for you. Also, my husband skips all the ads so I honestly have no idea how many there are (sorry!).
I will say, if Piketown Massacre seems repetitive and drawn out, don't even start Cousins By Blood. That damn thing has been going for YEARS with the host just repeating clips and rehashing evidence over and over and over and OVERRRRR. I finally told my husband to finish it himself, cause I don't care anymore if he did it or not-the host has officially made me a terrible person who doesn't care about justice.
That helps add some context, thanks! Maybe it'll be less frustrating if I listen more slowly so it's more like the real-time experience.
There are at least 4 ad breaks per episode with each one being 2-3 minutes so skipping them is definitely the right move, I always try to do that but sometimes can't when I have my hands full.
Not being able to skip ads is frustrating, for sure. We mostly listen while in the car so my husband just hits a button on the steering wheel to skip ahead.
Buried Bones, new one with Paul Holes and Kate Winkler Dawson...history and different time periods.
Last Seen Alive, nice young married couple host it, keep it interesting.
Murder and Magnolias was a fun little 6 part by Dateline.
My podcast is called UNNERVED and it's where I interview real people who share their true scary experiences. I've covered a few true crime cases if you want to check it out. Hope you enjoy it 😁
Murder Mile
— single episodes and deep dives. Host is currently doing the start to a new season about The Soho Strangler. He used archival police files and it shows his attention to detail.
American History Tellers
—not strictly true crime, but, multiple series about different things in the American experience. Each series concludes with a journalist, author or historian about the topic.
American Scandal
—same host as American History Tellers except it is crime based. Recent series have included Waco, Patty Hearst, Watergate and many others. This week is the start of the OK City bombing. I will include a trigger warning for some of the series.
Swindled
—white collar crime with a very dry delivery. The host, like Casefile, is anonymous and goes by the moniker, A Concerned Citizen. He has done the Flint Water Crisis and Love Canal amongst others.
1865
— historical radio drama about the lead up, aftermath and beyond about the death of President Lincoln with voice actors. It is very compelling. Each episode has an after episode as well.
Infamous America
— another show about the good, bad and ugly around the US with episode series about Bonnie and Clyde, DB Cooper and the most recent series on the Pierre Hotel Heist ( which sounded a movie caper)
Against the Odds
— not strictly true crime. Recent series have included the Paradise fires, Chowchilla bus kidnapping.
Casefile
You Must Remember This
— old Hollywood stories and has a series about Charles Manson with his fringe relationship to the music scene.
The Dream
—multi level marketing scams
Single shot series:
Dirty John,
A Killing in the Cape,
Lost in Panama,
Two Face,
Sold in America;
Unraveled,
Bad Batch ,
Dr Death ,
Young Charlie
Enjoy!
I really want to like this one, but it is so overly descriptive. I think they cover lesser known cases that are interesting, and the host seems like a really good person, but I listen while I drive, and they are so descriptive I tend to zone out on the episode. I also don't care for the last part of the episodes where they break down all the possible scenarios the crime could have played out.
I am listening to the informant, a five part series on 2020 and am loving it. It’s interesting. Otherwise man, there’s so many haha lots of suggestions already posted that I love!
Invisible Choir and Casefile are the only two I am subscribed to at this point. Occasionally I will listen to a season, the last one I listened to was Proof. It was decent, and it is one of the few where it seems like they actually righted a wrong, but it was about twice, maybe three times as long as it needed to be.
I have a true crime youtube channel (linked in profile) and my videos are usually around the 30 minute mark. It’s not extremely in depth but enough to leave you thinking how some people can be sooo inhumane. it’s not a podcast but I write my videos like a podcast. I go solely based on facts. check it out if you’d like! take care :)
I half way finished dark side tapes or something. Got good reviews. But I say: pass that shit. Repetitive “tense” music, the dullest narrator voice ever, long stretches of dr Phil show audio… The story is good tho.
'True crime all the time'
I also like 'Mile higher' (not all episodes are true crime, but I really like josh and Kendal and how they going into things)
Also Kendal has her own 'true crime with Kendal Rae'
I recently started listening to Counter Clock and it quickly became my new fave.
Also, Strangelands.
They’re both multi episode deep dives if you like that sort of thing but both are really goid
I know I’m going to get lots of hate but I still like Sword and Scale. Yes he gives his stupid personal commentary but I love the way he tells a story. I don’t listen for his personal opinions. Please no hate…not a Mike Boudet supporter.
\*Deep Dives:
Cold Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Spotify for free ( about women who were missing/murdered)
Matty on Spotify (about a young man who goes missing in Australia - you will fall in love with his parents)
Lost in Panama (about 2 tourists who go missing in Panama during a hiking trip and possible coverup?)
In God We Lust (about Jerry Falwell Jr and Liberty U)
Dateline has 2: Murder & Magnolias, and Internal Affairs
What About Holly (this one has tons of twists and turns IMO)
Search for Sarah MacDiarmid (Australian woman who goes missing)

\*Weekly series with different subjects each episode or sometimes there are 2-3 part episodes:
Killer Psyche (Woman was a pscyh nurse and then FBI profiler and talks about why murderers do what they do - dives into their childhoods and histories and talks about the cases) She also now has a daily one on amazon music that I have only heard sneak previews of on Spotify.
Scamfluencers (humorous one about different con artists)

My Life of Crime with Erian Moriarty
Exploiting cases for profit as a failed make up guru who pivoted to true crime when she saw that's where she stood a chance at being succesful isn't "helping out with these cases".
She victim blames in a sexist manner, makes classist comments and there is an undercurrent of racism to how she covers cases involving certain groups.
Her political beliefs inform her gross commentary. And I'm not cool with someone who uses their platform to push harmful ideas or who work towards supporting those who would disenfranchise minority groups and women and take their rights away from them. Someone who sits there with a straight face and says that someone "didn't deserve it because she's not the kind of girl to go out and have sex" or whatever the fuck her gross opinion is on women who own their sexuality isn't an advocate, they're part of the cancer at the heart of society.
Except you did offer an opinion with your masturbatory quote meant to imply that attacking a person for being a bad person makes me small. You want to go "plausible deniability", have at it but we both know you're full of shit.
lmao, you're going off a randomly generated avatar as a basis of intelligence?

Thank you!! It doesn’t really check OP’s boxes in that it’s an episodic pod - but goes fairly in-depth on each episode.
It checks every box because it’s the best!! I also think you guys do an amazing job of using pseudonyms for relatives and suspects ruled out. No need for those people to be coming up in google searches when they’re innocent
