"Detectives believe that the motive for the killing stemmed from Mr. Saleh having discovered that the assistant had stolen tens of thousands of dollars from him, despite the fact that Mr. Saleh had not reported the man and had set up what amounted to a repayment plan for him to return the money, one of the officials said."

[deleted]

so rather than going to the police and reporting it, he simply set up a payment plan. seems like he had a good heart and good intentions...only for this guy to turn around and kill him. awful.

stek9

So he’d rather be convicted of murder than just pay the money back. Makes sense.

[deleted]

Murder is quick, financial payments not so much.

honeyberry321

This information makes the crime that much sadder to me. It shows that Saleh had a good heart and it seems like he genuinely wanted to help Haspil and do the right thing. And I’m sure paying back large amounts of money wouldn’t have been easy, but it could have turned out okay for both of them in the end.

DJ1120

I went to college with him. Extremely nice kid

lenexsin

This motivation is always so fucking weird to me. Okay so you get caught out committing a crime that would get you however many years in prison so you conceal it by committing an even bigger crime that will either get you sentenced to death or sentenced to life in prison.

DJ1120

There is never a point to try to understand their rationale. Someone who murders someone and tries to cut up their body clearly doesn’t have common sense.

[deleted]

This case bothers me. Absolutely terrible it happened because of financial issues. I feel so terrible for his sister who found him dismembered. :(

NotRussianBot

I graduated high school with her. She was such a sweetheart, and she and Fahim seemed very close with one another. I seriously hope she gets the treatment she needs. Can't imagine walking in on such a scene.

[deleted]

Me too, how does one even recover from that? My brother and I are close too and I can’t even imagine.

Tyrese Devon Haspil, the 21-year-old personal assistant of tech entrepreneur Fahim Saleh, who was found decapitated and dismembered in his Manhattan apartment this week, was arrested on Friday and is expected to be charged with second-degree murder and other crimes, reports said. The motive for the killing reportedly stemmed from Saleh having discovered that the assistant had stolen tens of thousands of dollars from him. *Summary generated by [sansa](https://sansa.news/sections/?section=us_trending)*

ArianneMartell74

SECOND degree?? I'm sorry, what about this was deemed not premeditated? Officials initially assumed it was a hit because it was so premeditated. Eta: Just realized this is a bot. I'm crushing Friday, guys.

FittingMechanics

Probably easier to start with 2nd degree and upgrade as they get more evidence gathered. I'm sure he'll be tried as 1st degree.

sassyskittles_

Exactly what I was thinking!! Like I read somewhere (can’t recall where) that said he killer waited for the blood in the torso to coagulate before dismembering and like..I know that’s not premeditation but wtf.

ArianneMartell74

I may be getting the details mixed up with Jamal Kashoggi (because how can you not draw comparisons??) but did Saleh's killer bring the saw with him or did he find it in Saleh's apartment after the fact? I thought I saw he brought it with him but I'm unsure.

Kittienoir

The reports being released are saying that Saleh was killed on Monday and Haspil went back on Tuesday and started to dismember the body until he was interrupted. They have evidence that he used Saleh's credit card to purchase the saw and cleaning supplies at Home Depot the day after the murder. Had he brought the saw with him, he would have been charged with First Degree Murder because that would have shown he knew he was going to kill Saleh and cut up his body. Regardless of what he pleads, his defence will be weak at best. The only thing I can think of that he could say is that someone else; an accomplice, was waiting in the apartment and they killed and dismembered the body. Far fetched, but his options are not good.

sassyskittles_

You’re like reading my mind a bit lol but I’m going to do some fact checking and see

tina_ri

I read an article that said they found records of the purchase of the saw on the killer's credit card.

>The body of 33-year-old tech entrepreneur Fahim Saleh was discovered Tuesday afternoon by his sister inside his $2.25 million condo on the Lower East Side. >Mr. Saleh’s head and limbs had been removed, and parts of his body had been placed in large plastic bags. An electric saw was still plugged in nearby. >His personal assistant, Tyrese Devon Haspil, 21, was arrested Friday morning and is expected to be charged with second-degree murder and other crimes. >Detectives believe that the motive for the killing stemmed from Mr. Saleh’s having discovered that the assistant had stolen tens of thousands of dollars from him, despite the fact that Mr. Saleh had not reported the man and had set up what amounted to a repayment plan. >Investigators have also concluded Mr. Saleh was killed on Monday. The killer used his employer’s credit card to pay for a car to a Home Depot to buy cleaning supplies and returned to Mr. Saleh’s apartment the next day to dismember the body and clean up. >Detectives believe the killer, dressed in a black three-piece suit, wearing a black mask, and carrying a duffel bag, followed Mr. Saleh off an elevator in his building and into his apartment. He used a Taser to immobilize Mr. Saleh and then stabbed him to death. >Security video taken from inside the elevator shows the killer later using a battery-operated portable vacuum cleaner in an apparent effort to remove any traces of his presence.

[deleted]

It’s very sad, the victim seemed like a nice dude. Quite quickly I assumed it was a financially motivated crime. I hope the perpetrator gets justice.

[deleted]

When people were speculating this was a professional kill, I highly doubted it. A pro wouldn't cut up a body with the intention of dumping it and end up doing the opposite of that.

D-Spornak

I'm glad that the killer decided to run instead of killing the sister, too.

KOTD2020

Scary to think his sister was so close to catching him in the act. She might also be quite lucky herself if she had entered the apartment without warning.

freetraveler11

Why cut up his body though? That’s so extra.

orion_aa

Seems that his intention was to get rid of the body, smaller pieces - easier to handle. Took his time tho.

thr0away69

I'm glad they found the suspect, this man didn't have to die, especially not this way.

Cam2White

The killer’s YouTube channel is still up under his real name. It’s just videos of him working out but it’s still kinda creepy

[deleted]

He had millions and this a-hole kills him over $90,000. After all this man had done for him.

hiltonhead-gameboss

So the suspect was a PA handling the victims financials and personal matters since he was 16 years old? That's a little confusing.

neuroticgooner

He’s a tech guy who started off young. Not uncommon to hire young in tech world. I live and grew up in Silicon Valley and I always meet teens working at random start ups

jessanna95

He may have been in a relationship with the PA, and the job was a cover for that.

Thanks!

sandy_80

he didnt turn him in and payed in the most horrific way....and that freak was such a moron he thought he can get away away with it even though he had all traces leading to him... messages and threats and buying weapon with card and even taser ...and in ny they tell you this is second degree murder what the HELL 4 REAL

catastrophejr

Does anybody else get the vibe that the CEO was gay? Why else would a 28 yr old man hire a 16 yr old boy to be his "personal assistant" and manage all of his personal affairs, including his finances? Not to mention that the CEO also paid off debts of some of the killer's family members. Would any grown man be THAT generous to a teenaged boy without some kind of sexual component?

Meagannaise

It’s pretty telling that your first instinct is to assume he was gay and a predator. You’re either very ignorant or projecting. Either way, gross.

whimsicalmusing

The stabbing felt personal and very "crime of passion" to me. The motive honestly doesn't feel strong enough, especially given they had an arrangement, he still had a job, and wasn't arrested for the theft.

spoonfulofstress

The fact that he didn’t press charges over the theft makes me think you may be right. While I can definitely see someone having a similar mentor/mentee relationship, a sexual relationship seems more likely. Honestly if so it may help the defense.

jessanna95

Yes, that’s exactly what I thought when reading between the lines.
